New Star Trek MMO first impressions

I've played MMO's since Ultima Online, Diablo if you count it....this MMO is something dreams are made of. The Star Trek genre has so much to offer, with backdrop/lore and future expansions. Wonder how it will do against EVE and other Sci Fi based games though.

I've played some LOTRO. I'm too busy for it most of the time, so the subscription long ran out. It was pretty fun though, and fun to team up on difficult quests.

STO looks sooooo fun. You can be a friggin' GORN, people.

The ship combat sounds awesome. And I kind of like it being post-NEM.

Star Trek: Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic are the only two upcoming MMOs I'm seriously looking forward too. I'm wondering if Champions Online is going to be that much different from City of Heroes/Villains.

I am really looking forward to this Star Trek MMO. I haven't been following it very closely though. Last MMORPG I played was Star Wars Galaxies, played for a long time until the dreaded NGE hit, and never really looked back.

It looks good, definitely. I know a guy working on the artwork, his whole team is really well versed in the look and feel.

I have concerns about the gameplay, though. So far, what I've heard (you all play captains, you can't work together on one ship) doesn't feel like Star Trek.

As an aside, did anybody catch the new screenshot of the old Romulan vessel from ENT? Damn, they hold onto their ships for a long time!

The Federation hardly gets away with that either, those Miranda-class starships must have the best warranty of any Starfleet vessel built so far. As to the captain thing, you actually get to design the look of and name the members of your command crew as well, the episodic, story-driven content is designed to give the impression that you're taking part in your own "series" so to speak. However they are designing their systems with the idea of having player crews potentially taking those places in the future, that is if there's a way of making the content required for those positions.

They've made it clear that the this isn't a simulation and that entertainment is the primary focus creating a game, they weren't going to stick in a half hearted system for the medical officer, for example, where they're spending half the time twiddling their thumbs while the captain takes his ship for a joyride round the sector, they would want that player to have the same breadth of content that would be available to the captain or the security officer. The issue at that stage then is you eventually end up with a considerable amount of content being developed :D

I have never really got into MMOs either, but as an avid Trek-gamer I would be obliged to check this one out. I am trying not to get excited about it as I know most games- particularly trek games, usually suck. But I will definitely check it out.
