I ask because there has not been a numbered Trek film since Star Trek VI--The Undiscovered Country and the name of the current film is simply Star Trek, and very deliberately so, yet this forum insists upon calling it Star Trek XI. I would not be surprised--in fact, I'd be delighted--if the next film is simply Star Trek II.

Whatever they call it, it's still the 12th Star Trek film.

Or 13th, if you count Forbidden Planet.

I'm calling it XII regardless. Naming the new movie Star Trek 2 would be a canon violation, as we already have a Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. It'd be worse than Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Clone Wars. They don't even try to distinguish the two. But Star Trek purposely numbering a second Star Trek movie, Star Trek 2 would be stupid.

Well, since it would be the second film titled "Star Trek II," then it should more properly be called "Star Trek II 2."

And for the sake of nostalgia, I think they should call the next Bond film "007 XXIV." (Still not as catchy as J.J. Abrams' "M:I:III" though ...)

To the topic on hand...if they number it, they'll number it 2, but I doubt they'll number it 12, or even number it. They're trying to reintroduce Star Trek to the masses and don't won't people to feel lost. If you number it 12, people won't see it because they'll feel lost because they've haven't seen the other 11.
