Trek won't drop 20% on Sunday. Memorial weekend Sundays usually have very small drops (10-12%). Every movie in the Top 10 actually had higher Sundays than Fridays last Memorial Day.

And the proverbial wagon train to star seems to be using those wheel to great effect.

Re: Star Trek - $4.6 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million

How much from the Canadian holiday could've boost these numbers for both Trek and A&D for Monday 18th - by about $1 million or so...?

Probably something like that....maybe a little less. You can estimate it, given the Canadian box office numbers from the last two weeks, given here:

http://www.tribute.ca/movies/BoxOffice.asp?id=15117

Star Trek only dropped about 24.5% off its opening weekend in Canada, because of the holiday. You could assume that it would have otherwise dropped the same %age as in the USA, and work out the number.

It definitely helps figuring out an estimate. Thanks for that. :)

Actually, I was a bit confused when I wrote that. You can figure out how much the Canadian holiday helped things during the weekend by doing that kind of comparison, but I'm not sure there's an easy mathematical way to do it for Monday. Maybe you just have to compare to a normal Monday drop.

Re: Star Trek - $4.6 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million

$250 million looks like a lock now (it should be on pace to be north of $200 million after this holiday weekend). It's tracking ahead of Iron Man during the weekdays, so I think $275-278 is a very feasible final domestic box office take.

I'm afraid Terminator: Salvation is going to put a dent in Trek this weekend. I don't see any way that's not going to be the #1 movie of the weekend at the very least.

It will likely be #3 and take in something like $32-34 million over the 4-day weekend.

Re: Star Trek - $4.6 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million

The way Star Trek continues to track so closely to Iron Man is continued good news. I think it will have a very respectable third place Memorial Day weekend, but I'm starting to think Terminator may not be the long-term competition I originally thought it would be.

Yeah, I think T4 will open very big (more than Trek), but not have as long of legs.

T4 is looking to be a one and done like Wolverine and A&D.

The Faithful will go see Terminator, just as the Hankophiles and Wolverinies flocked to their movie, heck, just like Trekkies packed the house too.

I do think that T4 will start huge and fall like a rock.

Your 32-34 million 4-day take would be fantastic.

Even after that, school's out, and weekdays will turn into semi-weekends at the box office.

I guess..

I hope... :)

Re: Star Trek - $4.6 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million

T4 will do T3 business, the reviews haven't been glowing so far and its reminding me a bit of T3. Christian Bale is a draw though, but it still lacks Ahnold.

I would love for Star Trek to reach 32 million dollars over the holiday weekend. That would just be really, really, awesome. I must say I was surprised by the strength of the numbers on Monday.

I hope it can stay above 3 million between Tuesday-Thursday. Talk about legs....

It still being in IMAX today and tomorrow might help...

Re: Star Trek - $4.6 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million

Man, what's with all this pessimistic anti-Terminator BS?

There's enough room for more than one blockbuster this summer. Trek has already done extremely well and there's no doubt there's going to be a sequel.

There's no reason to bash Terminator and make dire predictions for it -- you guys haven't even seen it yet! If the film is good, it will have legs...if not, it won't.

Normal people aren't going to boycott Terminator just so Trek can make 25-30 mil more or whatever.

After Thursday, to me it will have had it's moment in the sun -- time for another films moment to shine.

Re: Star Trek - $4.6 million Monday (5/18) - $152 million

Rottentomatoes is usually a good indicator of what people think about the movie. Not bashing Terminator--it could be outstanding. So far, it is at 20%. Doesn't mean it won't make major bucks though...

You're right though, there's enough room for everyone over the long weekend and school recess.
