That doesn't seem very official to me, and personally I could care less if he's in there or not. I don't think he should be any major character, other than an easter egg. The original captain of the Enterprise is Christopher Pike, and other than him it would be Archer.

In the new timeline Pike is certainly the 1701's first CO. However, nothing of the sort is claimed about Pike in The Cage or the Menagerie. He is merely said to have commanded the Enterprise before Kirk.

I don't see any reason why he couldn't fulfill a role similar to Robau's if the story calls for such a character. It's not like an awful lot is known about April that the writers would have to work around. "That guy there is April. Moving on."

Even if in Gene's trek this April had command for a shirt time before Pike that would be altered now in this new timeline so he can exist but never have been the captain of the big E. Still it would be nice to see more other Starfleet captains they could drop a line like it was between him & Pike for the command of the ship and it went to Pike.
Be nice to see April but heads with Kirk because he feels Kirk doesn't deserve command of the Enterprise yet or something.

Perhaps April was intended to be the first CO of the Enterprise but had been off-planet at the time of the film. In his absence Pike took command during the emergency, then following the events of the film Starfleet promoted Kirk to Captain and CO of the Enterprise, leaving April high and dry. He could be the CO of a lesser vessel, or perhaps manning a desk whilst waiting for another Constitution-class vessel to be constructed, or in command of such a vessel.
Call me crazy or maybe I just miss BSG already But I wouldn't mind seeing Edward James Olmos As Capt. April.

Actually the NCC-1701 is on its maiden voyage in XI. Enterprise is a proud name. Certainly there were Enterprises prior to the 1701. (Archer's NX-01 is the obvious example). Pike could very well have commanded the previous Enterprise for years--along with Number One and a very young Lt. Spock--before this new one was launched.
Wow. One, surprised to hear this. Two, it makes me think well of Greenwood as an actor that he's developed this whole back-story and really immersed himself in the lore to the extent of thinking this up. I knew he was a good actor the first time I saw "Thirteen Days" but now I really understand why Pike seemed so credible.

Things changed in this Universe. A Pike/April component could help to explain the differences in timeline. Perhaps something along the lines of April not getting to Captain the Enterprise because of the redesign.
So your logic in "counting" on Captain April is because they introduced Captain Robau?
I myself would love to have April in the next movie. Don't forget about his loving wife who was a pioneer doctor that was instrumental in the way medical tools and procedures are carried out. It'd be nice to see an older Federation couple who the crew would look up to with respect and admiration.

Kirk totally bought it too since he didn't whine about losing command. And seeing April take the captains chair for only a brief time was more meaningful and more emotional than Kirk taking the chair in this new movie. Kirk was a jerk, April is the man.
