Hurley's Guitar (Spoilers)

Mitty

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I wondered what was up with the guitar when we first saw him with it after the initially got back to the island, and then later we saw him with it on the plane, and finally we saw Jacob give it to him.

Is it important? Is it Charlie's guitar? Obviously we're meant to completely dismiss it but somehow I think at some point it will play a crucial role.

Before we saw where he got it, I had always just assumed it was a placeholder for Charlie on the plane, to make it as similar to the original crash as possible, per eloise hawkings' instructions.

Now that we know where it came from, I still think that, I guess.

^^^ That's a logical thought. It could be that. Jacob also gave Sawyer the pen when he was young and I wondered if there was any connection?

Mr Awe

My original assumption was that it was Charlie's guitar. It wasn't until this episode that I realized that doesn't make any sense (well, it didn't make any sense unless Jacob gave it to him in a nice subtle way to convince him to go back).

I figured it was Charlie's guitar since the first time we saw it in the airport scene.

I didn't know how he got it, just assumed he got it in some mystical way - the same mystical way everything else happens that has anything to do with the island.

Now, after seeing this episode, I'm wondering if it's not actually Charlie's guitar in the case, but something else. Something necessary for Hurley to .... do something - something special. And we'll find out what in the episode that it becomes important and we'll see a flashback of Charlie visiting Hurley after Jacob left and Charlie telling Hurley to look in the guitar case.

Maybe it's a bunch of guns like the gun case from Desparado.

Although, I have to admit, all my theories so far this season - well, the entire series - have not come to fruition, so, I'd take it with a grain of salt if I were you.

I think he filled it full of toilet paper. Its not like it grows on trees on the Island.

Mr. Awe, interested. Let's see Jacob gave Kate a lunchbox, Sawyer a pen, Jack a candy bar, Hurley a guitar ....

It's got Charlie's katra in it.
That's the best theory I've seen so far. :bolian:

It's interesting to note that they were the only four who were given something physical...and those four were the ones who were taken by the Others in season 2. Coincidence? I wouldn't bet against it considering this is LOST.

I think that handing them something physically was only so that he could touch them. If you notice how he gives James the pen, for example, it's very awkward and he makes sure to touch his finger.

These people were marked by Jacob:
James, his hand.
Jin, his right arm?

Kate, her nose.
Hurley, his arm.
Sayid, his shoulder.
Jack, his hand.
Sun, her left arm - or did he actually touch her or was he just close? Remember, she didn't go back in time on flight 316.

They made it a point to also do a Juliet flashback and Jacob wasn't shown. The only one. Curious.
