IMAX seat suggeston

My advice: the best seat in a real IMAX theater...

...is to sit somewhere other than in a real IMAX theater.

I saw it last night at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island, true IMAX, sitting just below the projector dead center, and I almost had to walk out. The film is just too big, too busy, and too wide as well (the "Iowa" and "Vulcan" captions were almost invisible off to the far left). Any action scene became one big blur; it was impossible to see enough of the screen at one time to get a sense of what was occurring. I essentially missed the entire fight on the platform over Vulcan, not because I was closing my eyes, but because it was moving too fast to see the characters.

I wasn't alone; most of the people there seemed to be more nauseated than entralled (and one person apparently actually threw up, somewhere near the top).

I'm going to see it again on a *smaller*, flat screen, hopefully to enjoy the experience rather than having to close my eyes every few minutes to recover.

In my great experience with IMAX (one showing... this film), I'd say do NOT sit beyond the half way point down.

We were so close to the screen it was hard to take it all in.

I suppose this depends on where the projector is. In our case, it was near the ceiling on the rear wall, in what appeared to be an ordinary projection booth.

Hearing some of you talk about sitting near the projector sounded strange, so I guess they're not all set up the same way.

I've seen it four times in true IMAX (after two times in regular 35mm) and haven't had any problems seeing everything that's happening.

Sit towards the top in the center.

Just checked the schedule for the IMAX dome theater at the Franklin Institute in Philly (where ST: The Exhibition will be until Sept 20) and they have the movie scheduled there through June 18! Looks like I'll be seeing this film at least once or twice more!

I'll duly report on the viewing experience.

I saw it there last night. Get in early and do not sit too close to the front. My wife and I were left with no choice but center seat, fifth row (from the front) and most of the Kelvin scenes (and many other throughout the film) were unwatchable. Based on that, I wanted to go all the way to the back.

The IMAX at the Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago) made me feel ill, and I had to leave. We've been watching Star Trek five times at a multiplex IMAX, and it's been a good experience.

I've seen it in IMAX twice and I've loved it. I'm so unhappy they're taking Trek off of those screens. :(

I don't think anyone knew how well it'd do. In Philadelphia's Franklin Institute's IMAX theater, all showings for yesterday were sold out by mid-afternoon. They were also, coincidentally opening up a traveling Trek exhibit and the place was crowded with normal-looking folks talking about Star Trek.

I saw it last night in IMAX, 3rd time overall but first in IMAX. It was SO awesome on that enormous screen with absolutely riveting sound. I don't think I'll be able to make it to the theater, IMAX or otherwise, to see it again so I'm really glad the last time was such a thrill. :techman:

I saw it in the Fresno, CA Imax screen. It was hard to find seats, I got one in the center. It was incredibly loud but bearable, and the picture was nauseating. That shaky cam shit might look good on a tv, but it sucks in a big screen like that. I liked the regular theater better, I wish I had seen it there for the second time. I found the experience lame, I doubt I'll ever see another movie in Imax format ever again. At least the movie itself is good, otherwise the day would've been a total waste.

Just to throw in my 2 cents, I went in early and chose the center seat in a row about three-quarters of the way up (sadly the center rows were taken by the time I got there). This was in one of the new IMAX-lite theaters where the screen is a little larger than a regular screen (don't know how that compares to a true IMAX screen). Surprisingly this turned out to be perfect since I saw the screen clearly and the sounds were loud but easy to discern (the shaky cam was more noticeable on screen though). In fact I would say the center seats from direct center to three quarters up is the sweet spot for this type of IMAX.

I don't know if it was due to where I sat (toward the middle), but I found action scenes almost impossible to follow on IMAX (genuine IMAX - third-largest screen in the world). I thought it was a problem with the film until I saw it at a regular cinema and did not have anywhere near as much trouble.

Wow, that sounds great! Thanks.

Seeing it in REAL imax tomorrow night...will let you know the crowd level.
