Should NuSulu be gay?

No, he should not be gay. None of TOS characters were gay. This new timeline is still based off what came before, it's not a complete reboot like BSG. If they want to add one they need to make a new gay character.

It would be a little weird considering he has a daughter in Trek. Granted she could be adopted I guess but I was under the impression that she was his biological daughter based off the dialogue in Generations

Lots of gay people have kids, via adoption, artificial insemination, surrogates, etc. I'm sure the 24th century has plenty of ways for Sulu to have a daughter.

Hell, David Gerrold, inventor of the Tribbles, is gay, and he wrote an entire book about raising his son. THE MARTIAN CHILD.

Sulu would seem to be the logical choice, and not just because of the Takei connection.

Re-read my post. I know its possible. But it isnt likely and it isnt a good idea, especialy with the reasons given

Why isn't it likely? I don't remember GENERATIONS saying anything about Demora's conception. Sulu could be gay and she could still be his biological daughter.

And the ENTERPRISE has needed a gay regular for decades now . . .

Because if they wanted him to be gay they would have said he was gay.

And youre damn straight it needs a gay character, so make a gay character. Dont take an already pre-existing one and pull a BSG and change him into a gay character

'Prime Sulu' having a daughter is not a strong enough argument against the idea of making changes to the character's sexuality in this new alternate timeline. With that said, however, I don't really want to see it happen unless it is relevant to the story being told. Simply doing it for the sake of doing it - even as a homage to George Takei - would simply feel gratuitous and pandering.

Because if they wanted him to be gay they would have said he was gay.

Because back in the 1960's, that wasn't an option. Now it's way overdue. And Sulu never had any sort of love life on the old show, so there's plenty of wiggle room there.

No......Just never got the sense that any of the main crew were gay, sorry. It would seem like a forced and obvious move as stated above. In some future spin-off, yeah, but it just wouldn't work for me with these characters.

Cho-Sulu could stand a bit of something; he was a little serious compared to the rather fiery Takei-Sulu.

Not a criticism; I like Cho. But at least as a cadet, I can't picture him turning around in the Romulan neutral-zone conference meeting and biting out, "And if they could say they destroyed us?"

So what you are doing is retconning. No thanks. Never been a fan of that. Why on earth would you try and "wiggle" something in there that wsnt supposed to be in there. Just make a new character with this aspect built in from the start. It comes across as being far less lame than "well we can change him into a gay character so lets do it".

But, you know, in real life, it's not always obvious that a person is gay. Sulu could have always been gay. Lord knows we saw little or nothing of his personal life. So you're not actually changing anything.

Amanda didn't used to be dead either. Times change.

Or you could go with Chekov. True, he had one two love interests on the old show, but those were glorified footnotes. They can be easily retconned away . . . .

It'll also have an eye roll inducing response from the audience. It reeks of "look at us, in order to make the movie seem modern were going to randomly slect a character and make them gay"

I don't understand why this would be the case. Most in the audience aren't familiar with the previous Trek mythos outside its broadest strokes, Sulu's sexuality isn't amongst them. nuTrek Sulu is Sulu for most of the audience. For those of us who are long-time fans, there are (as evidenced by this thread) varying opinions regarding the extent to which Sulu's sexuality has previously been established and the place of nuTrek within the broader franchise. I don't believe that making Sulu gay would pose a significant issue for more than a minority amongst the audience, it's not exactly on the level of minutiae of building the Enterprise in Iowa, but it's close.

Folks assume that Sulu is heterosexual not because there's been significant evidence presented to suggest that he is, but because there's been no significant evidence presented suggesting that he isn't, it's an assumption reflective of the heteronormative nature of society. We assume that folks are heterosexual in the same way that we assume that they're right-handed and aren't colour-blind. It's a reasonable fudge that enables us function with far greater efficiency than if we were able to operate only on the information we could prove about any given subject, but it should be recognised for what it is.

I wonder, judging from all the "Quinto is gay" rumors swirling around, whether they deliberately gave the character a heterosexual romance :p

I think Scotty should be gay. he already is kinda jolly. he'd be a hoot gay!

Chekov is the early favorite for red shirt, apparently; wouldn't do to make him gay and kill him.

Well put.

Also, Sulu's sexual orientation has never been an essential part of his persona. It would be weird to make Kirk gay, because he has this forty-year-old reputation as a great ladie's man. And Spock has always been torn between his Vulcan logic and his human feelings for various women on the old show. (He had at least one doomed "romance" every season.)

But characters like Scotty or Sulu or Chekov? They were never defined by their sexuality, but by their job descriptions and schticks. Scotty was the the jovial Scotsman who kept the engines running; Sulu was the cool navigator who once displayed an interest in fencing; Chekov was the green young ensign with the funny accent . . . .

Nobody thinks of Sulu as "the Asian guy who likes chicks."

(And, no, the Mirror Universe doesn't count. Those people will sleep with anything that moves . . . )
