Dollhouse renewed?

Yay, more Dollhouse!

I've really grown to like this show ever since episode 6 (read: when FOX' meddling stopped), so I'm very glad about this news.

I shocked but glad i really started to enjoy the show after about ep5/6.
So hopefully season 2 will be good.

The only downside to this is if Fox had something promising that now would not even get a shitty Friday night timeslot as a tryout. But check out the crap they have to choose from. (Oh no, we won't get the show about the horny girl werewolves!) Human Target is the only halfway interesting one, and that's already a lock.

There's no doubt about it, renewing Dollhouse is an act of existential despair. And I thought NBC was sad.

I'm happy it is renewed but there are some decent possibilities there. Masterwork looks promising. The Pretenders looks like it could be ok. The untitled Darpa project sound interesting.

Um..

HUMAN TARGET:
[what's it about?]
drama revolves around mysterious freelancer christopher chance, who takes on a different identity each week to help those in need

This is different from Dollhouse how? Other than not having a hot chick as the lead?

FOX owns Dollhouse but does not own Terminator. And given the endless number of Terminator-less bottle shows that populated this season, how could they drop the budget any further?

I think Fox wants to have a little Joss Whedon niche show on Friday nights but ... Dollhouse? Joss Whedon shows annoy me in general, but Dollhouse is pretty lame.

And what do you think "sever budget cuts" mean? That means Fox will bring back their meddling.

I also hope it's a mid season replacement. The season 2 premiere will most likely get 1.7 million viewers.

Maybe they can pair it up with Reaper! Reaper has about the same viewers!

I'm not quite ready to celebrate yet - I want to hear the official announcement from Fox. If true, the renewal of "Dollhouse" actually makes me happy. I'm shocked and surprised, but happy. This is a show that has really surprised me. I thought the concept had limited appeal, and assumed the series was doomed when all the reports of re-shoots and re-writing hit the internet. The first episode was tossed out and things were getting changed, then I think production shut down while the writers worked out kinks 'n such. Sounded like a sinking ship. But it's Joss Whedon, so I figured I would tune in to check it out. The first few episodes left me bored. Not interested. Then, suddenly, the quality started to improve. I was actually entertained by the episodes and found myself more drawn to characters that I'd originally shrugged off. By the end of the first season, I actually liked "Dollhouse".

The ratings sucked. The timeslot sucked. The Friday night deathslot is really a slap in the face to any show that ends up there. I believe Fox originally planned to air the show on another night as a lead-out of "American Idol" but then abandoned the show along with TSCC to Fridays. If Fox is smart enough to move "Dollhouse" to another night and give the show a good lead-in, the ratings would likely improve. And now that the series seems to have pulled itself together creatively, I think it could do very well. I keep thinking about Joss's other series - "Buffy" and "Angel", which had pretty underwhelming first seasons but become quite stronger in their second seasons. Granting Joss another season might allow him to finally give fans some awesome TV again. I fear that another cancellation might turm him away from TV projects, so it's nice to see that he'll have a chance to do something great with season 2 of "Dollhouse". I hope he delivers.

Not necessarily.
The budget cuts were apparently pitched as a concession by Whedon himself. As an example he used "Epitaph One" which had already been filmed on a shoestring budget.
If a smaller budget means, we're gonna get more bottleshows about the inner workings of the Dollhouse and less engagements of the week, I'd consider that an improvement.

Also: Dr. Horrible already showed what you can do with almost no budget. :)

Yay. More Doctor Tragic Whiskey Bravo and her fun playmates. Yay.

Frankly, since the one character I gave two shits about is already gone, those of you happy about this are welcome to it. I'm gone. I'll be starting my "Renew Space: Above and Beyond" campaign.

I'm glad Dollhouse got renewed, but I'm surprised. I liked Firefly better. And I still think Joss is a genius (I mean, Firefly, Dr. Horrible, Buffy ...). I'll try to hang in there and continue watching, but I hope it improves.

The continuing fragmentation of the TV marketplace is paying dividends for fans of SFF shows. Some niche shows are being renewed at ratings levels that would have meant sure cancellation just a few years ago.

There's gotta be more to it than that. Dollhouse's ratings aren't marginal, they're downright tragic! :rommie: Maybe Joss is going to make S2 with hand puppets?
Hey, then it really would be a dollhouse! :techman:

When I was typing that, I thought, hey that could be fun...

But do the show with Barbie dolls for maximum weirdness.

I really doubt that FOX was forced to choose between DH and TSCC.
It's always a choice to some extent. There are limited dollars and limited airtime. Maybe not between those two shows directly, but everything Fox could bring back - present shows and pilots - were a factor. Dollhouse can be produced more cheaply than T:SCC and maybe Fox wants to keep Whedon happy.

That's what makes it even more tragic. And this is my own personal opinion, but the worse show is getting picked up only because of the money.

Isn't that always the reason?

Of course.

It just makes me wish WB had a real channel that isn't just Gossip Girl and more Gossip Girl.

That way, Chuck and Sarah Connor Chronicles would be paired up together and would have gotten renewals ages ago.

Haven't heard a peep about any of those, and this is the time of the year when news on which pilots will make the cut starts to leak out. Fox announces its schedule Monday.

What I've heard is making the cut from Fox: Sons of Tucson, Human Target, Brothers, Past Life, Cleveland. Plus they might air a fall version of So You Think You Can Dance.

Definitely dead: AbFab, Eva Adams, Two Dollar Beer, Cop House, The Station.

Too bad because The Station (banana republic CIA farce from Ben Stiller) sounded like it could have been either great or an interestingly catastrophic failure. :D

I agree that a show about DARPA could be fascinating, but it doesn't seem to be on the final list (though not definitely passed on, as far as I know, either). But with the pickups so far, and all the returning series, it seems like their timeslots are filling fast.

It has a chisled-jaw lead actor, and hey guys like that - just look at 24. Fox is catering to its audience on firm footing there. And Chance (the lead character) is no victim; he's more like a bodyguard and he's chosen his risky profession, just like any cop or detective show. Apparently, he's a body double; he needs to fool bad guys into attacking him, instead of his vulnerable clients.

I'm dubious about the premise because there doesn't seem to be enough sci fi factor to make it work - the guy's not a shapeshifter, and just donning costumes and makeup isn't going to allow him to imitate a very wide range of clients, so how is he going to fool the bad guys? And is he never going to take clients who are female, or smaller males (Mark Valley is a big guy)? And what about black clients? Even Fox doesn't dare show a character in blackface.

I'll give it a shot, but I think it's got logic problems right out the gate. They should just amp up the sci fi factor enough to make it work.

If Fox is smart enough to move "Dollhouse" to another night and give the show a good lead-in, the ratings would likely improve

They'll leave it on Friday. The renewal is predicated on keeping it on Friday because Fox has written that night off as a lost cause. And the ratings won't improve no matter where you move it. That doesn't happen to shows anymore. People sample them (if the show is lucky; lots of shows don't even get decent sampling), either accept or reject them, and then forget them. There's always a new crop of shows to sample.
