Why was Nero angry at Spock?

- Spock promised to save Romulus
- Spock used Nero's ship to get off Romulus and warn the Vulcans
- Spock didn't manage to save Romulus
- Spock then saved the galaxy, just after Romulus was destroyed

Yes, we know Spock wanted to save Romulus, but if you were a paranoid Romulan whose home had just been destroyed those facts could be pretty damning.

ah, well I'm basing this on the Countdown comics, it wasn't in the film.

He warned the vulcans about the Hobus star threatening the 'entire galaxy'!

I've never understood this bit, how can a single star going nova threaten the entire Galaxy? or infact how can it even effect anything outside of a few lightyears perhaps? the nova wouldn't even be travelling faster than light sooooooo ya know.

Can I have an explanation please about this Hobus star thingy?

I wasn't clear on if it was the star in the Romulan system or a near by system. If it was the Romulan sun, they should have known a long time ago if it was done by natural processes. If it was a near by system, I could see them being caught a little off guard. If the star exploded, they would have a couple years warning to do something, evacuate the planet, build the red matter ship etc. But then, just creating the black hole to suck it all back would have taken years as well for the gravitational effects to reach the Romulan system.

So we're back at it being the Romulan sun and there's not a lot of warning for some reason. Maybe a few weeks/months at most. So I could believe a lot of people being evactuated from Romulus/Remus but you probably won't get billions out of the system. Plus it gives time to call Spock, get the Red Matter, and try to get to Romulus to avoid the problem. But then what? Was the red matter going to just stabalize the star or create the black hole? Because if the black hole is still created, you still have the problem of Romulus being pretty much inhabitable since there is no sun anymore? Granted there will be some time to evacuate more people, but Romulus seems screwed either way.

And I don't think the implication is that the destruction of the star would be 'environmentally' damaging to the galaxy, but rather, the essential collapse of the Romulan power structure would politically destabalize a large area. Think about it, crippled Romulan Empire, neighboring dominions such as the Klingons etc seeing an opportunity, or even subject races in the Empire rising up against weakened Romulans, and there's even species on the other side of the Empire that the Federation pro bably has had little to no contact with. There's no predicting what would happen if the Romulans were suddenly not able to maintain control over the empire.

Well the fact Romulus is destroyed pretty much instantly and Spock doesn't get there in time it leads me to believe that the Romulan star system was a binary or trinary system and it's not the Romulan sun going nova but another star orbiting the Romulan sun.
I also believe that the blackholes wern't permanent and they lasted only as long as the size of the red matter. The red matter being a type of fuel that slowly got used up and the blackhole evaporates.

With Romulus out of the way, the Federation is the only Superpower in the Alpha Quadrant. The Klingons are allies, the Cardassians Union a broken post war pauper, The Dominion are history, and Romulus conveniently blows up. Spock is a Vulcan whose government is a member of the Federation.

It was a super-duper nova.

Yeah, I read the Countdown trade paperback before the movie, and it doesn't make sense. Don't think about it.

It was just some special, unspecified explosion anomaly thing....sort of a cousin of the omega molecules in Voyager's "The Omega Directive".

Yes; doesn't make sense, but it was an interesting insight to Borg psyche.

If the stars supernova could somehow enter subspace making the wave capable of travelling faster than light then I suppose I can live with that as an explanation.

Maybe there was some experiments going on with red matter around a nearby star that had some sort of devastating effect, I don't know. Maybe they can't monitor every single star withing the empire, but if there were stars that were capable of this type of explosion naturally, there would have been warning long before the Vulcans even first made it to Romulus, and certainly in the 1000s of years since, they would have identified any stars nearby that had the potential to explode. So I'm leaning towards some sort of devastating accident and I like the comparison to the Omega directive. That consequences from that travel faster than light, so maybe another experiment went wrong.

And the Klingons have been enemies with the Romulans long before they were allies with the Federation. Who knows how they would react if they had a chance to move in like that. And what would the Federation do? Go to war with the Klingons while trying to defend the Romulans? And who knows whats on the other side of the Star Empire and who would be waiting for the chance to go after the weakened Romulans? Is any of that particularely likely? Probably not, but that's the kind of destabalizing questions that could happen in a bunch of different ways that could draw a sizeable part of the galaxy into conflict or at least competition for the territory of the Romulan Empire.

How do you figure that?

Not sure how anyone could reach that conclusion, the Dominion war occurred exclusively outside of their territory, they lost no systems whatsoever, they lost none of their ship building facilities and their troops are bred exceedingly quickly. About the only thing to stop them kicking off another war is Odo.

As for Nero, its because his master Darth Sidious ordered him after Spock. When you get Darth Maul tattoo's you sort of have to do as he says.

It is greatly simplified in the movie, but it is based (as much as any Trek is) in an at least credible scenario.

While NASA concludes that no star anywhere near the Earth is going supernova any time within the next few million years, there are those who estimate that a supernova anywhere within 30 light years of Earth could destroy it by ripping off our ozone layer. Even one 3000 light years away may affect the planet (or at least anything orbiting it).
There are also those who say that while a supernova may not directly harm the earth, nutrino bursts from it could activate our star, heating it up and endangering the Earth.

So, there is at least some science to the belief that a star going supernova could have a disasterous effect on a very large area.

Ok but then begs the question why was Romulus destroyed so quickly, it should take many many many years for the supernova from a nearby star to reach another star system. When Spock went to stop the supernova he was shocked it had exploded and destroyed Romulus, he was too late so clearly the supernova must be capable of FTL travel unless the Hobus star was a star within the Romulus star system and the Romulus star system is a binary or trinary star system.

Or possibly a rogue star, that was just unfortunately passing. Even so there has to be some explanation for why the shockwave was traveling at FTL velocities otherwise Spock would have had a period of years to evacuate Romulus.

The science in the film makes no sense, but its the universe we are stuck in for the time being, we might as well try to explain it.
