Gary Mitchell: Perfect Villain for Trek XII?

I know the dude is not an icon like Montalban's Khan. I know random people can't quote the actor's car commercials or Fantasy Island character, but the dude is seriously an excellent Star Trek villain.

He's not an "augment." He's not a Klingon. He's an esper. I think that's a bunch of baloney, but you could really make him into a compelling bad guy.

He's buddies with Kirk. He's good looking. He's got a love interest. He's got freaky eyes.

Also, he gets zapped by something in Outer Space. We might be able to see some real cool space stuff.

You could fight Klingons along the way.

Like you could have the ship in danger. Klingons everywhere, and then Gary pulls some crazy superhuman shit and makes the Klingon ships all crumble.

Also, the dude has the force. Doesn't Abrams like Star Wars? This guy is Anakin on crack.

I kinda wish they had thought ahead and cast a first tier actor as Gary, and put him in there in place of Chekov for the first movie. Casual fans would be going, who's this guy? But We would all be thinking, "Oh, crap!"

Gary Mitchell would be a great villain...maybe someone who's kinda envious that his friend Jim got captained right out of the academy while he's stuck at con?

I think they have to go less to a specific character than to a concept. Guardian of Forever, Mirror Universe, to craft a story about how the crew deals with the situation, with the "villain" being secondary, or at least, hitherto unseen.

Wonder if Spock and Kirk might be tempted to "re-alter" history so Vulcan is never destroyed and Kirk knows his father, only to realize you can't go back again.

A lesson taught by....

The Borg.

Just kidding there...

Also good, since the question "Why don't they just go back and change it back?" Has already come up. If they actually dealt with that, it would put the Abramsverse ahead of the curve in terms of consistency, since the same could be said for virtually any event in the Trek timeline.

Having said that, the Abrams/Kurtzman/Orci team have indicated they will probably shy away from time travel next time.

If this next movie really is going to be "The Dark Knight" of the franchise, Khan can be the one to turn Gary Mitchell bad. :p

Back on topic: Gary Mitchell would make a great villian.

The Enterprise runs into an anomaly and comes out unscathed. Except that one of their crewmembers, who is familiar with Kirk from the Academy, is developing powers...

Yeah, I was actually thinking this myself. They could get a name star as Mitchell and really play up the friendship between him and Kirk. This would make it all the more tragic when Mitchell goes bad and Kirk is forced to kill him.

There's all kinds of possibilities with this concept....

Yes, I'd like to see something like that - but OTOH, as Peter the Younger already said: It would have been more powerful had Gary already appeared in this movie.

And honestly, given Kirk's something of a lone wolf attitude save for McCoy and his womanizing, I don't see him close friends at the academy with anyone else...

Actually, I think it would serve the story better if Gary Mitchell were in the movie as Kirk's best friend and trusted bridge officer. There's no need to trun him into a villain.

Gary Mitchell was a character of depth and complexity. But, unfortunately since he was killed in his first appearance we never got to see the full dynamich of his friendship with Kirk, and thus there's plenty of unfulfilled story potential and wasted opportunities.

Not that I expect Abrams or the cohorts to realize this. No, they'll probably just turn Gary Mitchell into an uber-god-thing flashing a Nokia ad while being taken down with pretty splosions. "Entertainment," yay.

Do you have to finish every post with some derisive remark about the new film/crew/production team?

Why not try this: write a post on topic in whatever thread you're replying to, and then at the end of your post you could just put in brackets "[DERISIVE REMARK ABOUT ABRAMS/NIMOY/PINE/ORCI/ET AL]"

It would spare you the trouble of having to repeat yourself.

Were I JJ, I would have made that kid on the side of the road that Kirk passes when he's on his Corvette joy ride be Gary Mitchell...

I'd have had Kirk yell out "Hey Gary!" instead of whatever he yelled out...

Just a seed for the sequel. I can't believe they passed up that opportunity.

Along the same lines, I hope we see Carol Marcus in the next one...

I had the same thought about having Gary Mitchell in the next film, at the very least as a new crew member and we could see the friendship between Kirk and Mitchell develop. Although, I would prefer to see Carol Marcus and Kirk and possibly even the eventual birth of a young David.

I have never insulted Nimoy in any of my posts.

[Derisive comment about Abrams/urbandk/Pine/Orci/et al]

Or how about this for a twist? Make McCoy the one that gets zapped with magic powers and turns to the crazy side.

See, I'd be for all for a Gary Mitchell villian, but I'd be against Khan. I'd like something new, something new to the movie series or something taken from the tv series please.

But a movie rehash like Khan would be a huge mistake IMO.
