The New Enterprise in 3D! ... NOW FINISHED (threads merged)

OK, I thought I would bump this image up to the top, to ask for some input/advice.

My problem is this... I've learned so much in the process of making this ship, as well as the new klingon cruiser, that I am considering building this again, from scratch. :) This will be version 4...

I guess what I am asking is if you guys think I am spinning my wheels, or should I continue on and try to build the "definitive" close to screen accurate as possible version for Blender? I intend to spend quite a lot of time getting the small details right, and keeping the Mesh clean...

I would be very interested to see you give it another try.
After all you've learned and all the new images we have on the Enterprise and the various models, it should be a fun, enjoyable process.

To tell the truth, I would wait to see the movie at this point. Otherwise you will finish this version, see something in the movie you missed, and feel compelled to start over again.

Nah. :) I have plenty of reference pics of the model, and if I am in doubt, I will look at TobiasRichters to fill in the blanks. His is just about perfect.

I may have to re-do stuff like the way the nacelles glow, or something, but that kind of stuff isn't a big deal. :)

opening animation for Fedcon 2009

Tobias Richter made an opening animation for Fedcon 2009.
Length: 4:51
CGI shots of
USS Kelvin (NCC-0514)
USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)
All in a gorgeous HD video.

I thought it would be a good idea to show off the two most prominent ships of the new movie - the Kelvin and the Enterprise. Since these two ships would have never been able to meet, this is just a "what if" variation.
All elements of the movie, except the music, are done by Tobias Richter of The Light Works.

i know I'm asking for it, but that render is exactly why the old approach to Trek is "out". Stately, lingering beauty passes, and little weak-looking weapons blasts. It's almost, dare I say it, reverential...and tedious as heck.

Re: opening animation for Fedcon 2009

Well, um, he did say he was trying to show off the two ships, which does lend itself to less frenetic camera moves, wide shots, and not destroying the ships with the first 2 hits.;)

I liked the movie, a little cheesy and I wish the big E would have used its Phaser banks at least once. But the sound effects were good. What I wouldn't give for an Enterprise D phaser buildup placed on the 1701.

It did use its phasers in it it just instead of a long beam they made it have something similar to Pulse Phaser Cannons

hmm... I alway's thought the phaser build-up effect on the Enterprise D was too slow... It would work better I think if that ring was a bunch of separate emitters, that would fire in rapid succession. :)

I agree its 'shown' slow. I just assume if you where firing the phaser in real life the build up would happen so fast that you couldn't see the glow.

If you want to talk about real life (and mind you we are in a trek forum), I'd assume you would have a few different phaser emitters like in the new movie and you would have beams of a certian length. So i'd say the movie got that right.

The buildup in a circle around the saucer just looks awesome, thats all.
