Why Such Hate???

Okay, seriously, would fans of the movie just please stop accusing those of us who don't like it of being 'afraid' of 'change'? Change is not intrinsically good. Fear is not intrinsically bad. And there are other motivations beyond 'fear' of 'change'. Maybe, just maybe, some people simply, for perfectly legitimate reasons owing to matters of storytelling and drama and the larger implications for stories that they were enjoying quite happily, didn't like the film!

Jesus Christ...
Spot on.

I think it damages the credibilty of those posting here if they refuse to accept the above as a possibility.

This, again, from someone who loved the movie.

Hating the movie is fine. There's just a difference between constructive criticism (I thought such-and-such plot was underwritten which lead to this-that-and-the-other being very poorly done) vs. freaking out about where Enterprise was built or that there was no Gary Mitchell and also bashing everyone who doesn't think the same way. Just look at the way Dayton3 tries to psychoanalyze everyone who liked the movie to try and come up with what's wrong with them.

Have Captain Robert seen the movie or has he decided not to go see it like Dayton?

April saw it (with the intent to fulfill every one of his prophecies to hate it). Dayton claims he's going to see it at a later date so as to not help Trek's box office numbers.

Excellent point, this fear of change business is getting to be a little bit ridiculous.

There is an insecurity which sometimes manifests itself in the attempt to have everyone agree with you, and a corresponding attempt to vilify those who don't.

I agree that Star Trek needed change, but I think that a film full of plotholes and with a shitty forced connection to previous Trek is not the appropriate change.

I could see purists being upset that they kind of USED the TOS legends to take the franchise in a direction that it was never intended for. I'm not one of them because I can seperate Star Trek from this "Star Trek Lite".

I thought the film was a blast but in no way do I consider it to be anything but what it was.

The funniest thing I've read all day though was the guy who claimed Shatner WAS Kirk but now the new guy owns the role.

Some of us just felt it was a bad movie but are perfectly content to allow those who like it to like it. Unfortunately there is also the loony canon-istas who freak out about stupid things which have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the movie and these people say such ridiculous things that even those of us who didn't like the movie laugh at them. But in an effort to defend themselves some of the "gushers" started lumping the people who have legitimate complaints in with the loons and label us as "purists".

Not all fans of the movie do this of course, it is a small minority, but it does get on my nerves to be dismissed by some people for having opinions I don't hold. A defensive instinct kicks in and now my brain wants to lump everyone who likes the film into a group and attack them as well as the movie. As a rational human being I realise this is ridiculous and don't let this happen, but I can imagine that there are others who act on this instinct and thus the problem gets worse.

Violence begets violence, or as in this case, idiocy begets idiocy.

The "hate" for this film is nothing compared to the other series and films. I like Nemesis, Enterprise and Voyager. Imagine how sick I get of the bashing.

I have been reading the posts on here since i saw the movie Friday. I have seen every episode of every series except the animated series and i have seen and own every movie.

I liked the movie and I think it might be the ticket to a trek revival.

But I constantly see people bashing this new movie and its storyline. I ask why?

Is this why trek has been dying for YEARS now? The moment someone tried to do a storyline which in my book does a good job in both staying faithful to its lineage and bringing new people.

Sorry I'm going to have to call this one. You said you have seen every episode of every series but yet you say this new movie stays faithful to its lineage. Sorry it doesn't make sense.

The Enterprise during the "The Cage" didn't look anything like the iNterprise. The bridge and uniforms looked nothing like that. Surely if you had seen every episode you would have known this.

I have been bashed over the years for liking star trek the image was so shot to hell.

And yet here we are on face of a new beginning and we get people saying stuff like "I wish they never made this movie, Better DEAD then this". Are we this closed minded that we CANNOT accept any changes to anything.

I ask you were was trek headed before word of this movie even started to spread. To me it seemed it was on the fast track down the toilet. Nothing in the works and ENT was canceled.

Agreed. BUT they could have made a Star Trek movie that fit with what was established and still made it work. Star Trek didn't need an iNterprise, crazy new uniforms, the iBridge, the 20th century engineering, etc, ect. to make Star Trek cool again. I'll say it again WE DIDN'T NEED THOSE THINGS TO MAKE START TREK COOL AGAIN! I'm not yelling at you just yelling in general.

Yet when we get a glimmer of hope that STAR TREK might live again. We instantly get people who BLAST everything that was possibly changed.

I say if changes like this were not needed WHY THE HELL WAS STAR TREK DYING!

We needed a change from B&B not Star Trek itself!

Would I love a new series to be made? Yes I would certainly love to see it that strong. But when we as fans spew so much hate about the changes to be made to try to SAVE Star Trek it does nothing but make me wonder how we even got this far in the first place.

I hate the unneeded changes, not the changes to the advertising, promotion, etc.

To those who accuse the new movie of killing the old star trek I say this. Doesn't something have to be alive to be killed? Last I checked the "old" was canceled and rating were way down.

No. Just the last few movies were way down not the entire freaking timeline. We just needed to get some good storytellers in there to tell some good stroies. We didn't need a whole new timeline.

Even if this movie had not been made the 'old" would still be dead in my book. What had not been done? where had we not been?

We had not been to any time pre-2250's or anytime after 2390's and of course we only saw a few peoples perspectives in those times. There's still so much to explore in the real timeline. So to answer your questions:
What had not been done? Everything! Where had we not been? Everywhere! The way Fake Trek was done was totally UNNEEDED.

To me it seems ran out of good and above all PROFITABLE ideas.

Then you must have an extremely limit imagination.

Complain about it all you want anything not making money is not going to last no matter how good or awesome it may be.

Too bad that the world works this way because feeding billions of people and ending war is not profitable either but it is the right thing to do.

So can we STOP bashing everything and everyone under the sun? If the "old" was doing so well and great something like this wouldn't have needed to happen.

Something like this DID need to happen but not the way it did happen.

I think the series is so weak right now they wouldn't dare start a tv series. I also think that unless everything goes absolutely perfect for the next few movies this brief respite will be just that a short time when thing went up rather then down. At this point I can't even envision a series no matter how many movies they make. The Star Trek image is so bad right now.

Where is all of this hate?

Honestly, I just dont see it. Not even here. There's some people that did not like, but an overwhelming majority of fans and non-fans loved the movie.

THIS.

Just look at the poll in the stickied thread.

442 rate it excellent

117 rate it above average

Only 39 people rate it poor.

I would hardly call this a hated movie. I left a mailing list I was on for years to get away from the ENT hatred, this is after enduring the VOY hatred for far too long.

This movie is not hated, it's a HUGE success and has been embraced by fans. Of course some people don't like it for a variety for reasons but I have been just in shock at how many crusty luddite ent/voy basher types love this film.

If you had a poll that asked "Did ENT suck?" you would get a helluva lot more than 39 people saying yes.

I can't help but wonder what kind of movie we'd have gotten if Manny Coto had done it, instead of someone (JJ) who by their own admission, was *NOT* a Trek Fan.

It's a parallel universe. Pretty standard for sci-fi, and yet a lot of people seem to be stumbling on the concept these days.

You still don't get it.

The movie *WAS* excelent! In fact, it was probably one of the best action films of the DECADE!

But was it Trek? No, it wasn't. By their own admission, it was a "reimagined" Trek. A mutation.

Dude I have been listening to people crap on about how ENT wasn't Trek for years. For a while it was refreshing, a nice change from people crapping on about how VOY wasn't Trek.

It's on the screen. It's canon. It's Trek. You don't have to like it but Trek it is.

Why is it so hard to accept that some people just do not like the movie?

As for the fact that I haven't seen it yet, as I pointed out in another thread, I know all the details of EVERY movie that I've gone to see over the years (about 200 movies, or about 10 per year).

I loathe surprises and prefer to know what I'm getting before I spend my money on it.

That said, a new movie would be easier to live with if it were not the attitude of people who support EVERY brand new Star Trek series or movie aired (or so it seems).

The attitude by many with this movie is the same thing I remembered with nuBattlestar:Galactica.

"Look, this is the only new (series, movie) that they are going to make. So you might as well learn to like it."

It is an attitude that to me is both fatalistic and borderline bullying. Seemingly to not only insult people who don't like the new movie, but to almost casually dismiss them even having a valid right to not like the new movie.

Secondly.

I HATE hearing about box office performance and critics reviews as reasons Trek fans should like the movie.

It is simple bandwagoning that to me has no place in Star Trek or in any franchise.
