$35.5 Million more from overseas

^ Yea, not to mention the HUGE curve that Star Trek was given because of Nemisis. Even tepid good news for Paramount would have been a win. All of this is like CAKE to them now because they know the franchise can be saved. People have talked about how much it cost. Come on, imagine all Paramount gets out of this. Not just the movie, not just the DVD/Bluray, not just the I-Tunes, but also alllllllllllll the merchandise. This is all new Trek. All new phasers, all new communicators, all new ships, all new everything. They are going to make a bloody fortune. It is absolutely genius on the part of Paramount and JJ.

Yep. They are now setup to make a mint.
Not like I'm helping them or anything... :shifty:

:D

Weekend results were led predictably enough by the UK where Star Trek grossed $8.8m (£6m) from 501 venues. Excluding of £800,000 in previews this came in roughly 6% ahead of the £4.8m debut of Wolverine last weekend.

Buoyed by a hip sensibility, fresh-faced personnel and imminent launches in Japan, China and Mexico, there are indications that the USS Enterprise’s eleventh theatrical mission could live long and prosper given its broad appeal

Nemesis was the Batman and Robin of the franchise. Star Trek making Batman Begins numbers overseas in the end is a great thing.

Post from BOM forums:

To help put the Overseas opening for Star Trek into perspective, I think it is best to compare it to the Batman Begins opening...

Star Trek: $35.5 Million from 54 Countries
5000 Screens - $7,100 Average

Batman Begins: $41.7 Million from 73 Countries
8000 Screens - $5,212 Average

Batman Begins grossed $167 million overseas in total.

So in fact this foreign opening is very impressive, especially for Star Trek.

I hope so I didn't know China was showing the movie just with there population were talking decent $$$. Japan is not a TREK country from what I've heard but Sulu is a character from there country and also being played by a Korean bodes well for South Korea market. I've heard theres a decent audience in Thailand.

Am still nervous but maybe we will easily break $100 million from reorts saying the numbers will only get stronger, I would love I mean love it IF star trek could reach $130 million worldwide minimum.

Also I am surprised it open stronger than Wolverine in the UK, looks like it set for a god UK Box office total maybe pass $20 million.

I was glad to do my part. As for this movie's 'legs', I keep reading that terrific word of mouth will bring in more non-fans in the second week. Wolverine had a 60% drop-off in one week. I'll be doing my part once again with my date on Thursday. Hope all of you will pitch in as well!:)

Yup. Star Trek has yet to launch in Japan, China, India and a few smaller markets.

The first 3 markets are quite big and should see Trek easily reach $50mil opening.

As for finals, $100mil is now well within reach and $150mil quite possible.

Time will tell and for the next few weeks I will be keeping an eye on box office numbers!

Cheers

Japan is always a major market for films overseas. A good showing in Japan can add up to a lot of money.

Yeah, I can't say that comparing it to the 'previous gens' nadir (Nemesis) is exactly bolstering confidence.. or that it beat a movie that pretty much everyone agreed was completely much crap out of the gate (Wolverine).

Seriously, all snark aside, $75 million worldwide is actually a lot less than I would have figured for its opening weekend. Certainly doesn't bode well for the movie making its money back ($300M cost, remember)... I would have half-figured that the fanbois here would have shelled out that much.

But I guess all the reports of 'empty theatres' (even from fans here) are actually fairly telling...

You have no idea what you're talking about.

1) It's $75 million domestic, about $110 worldwide.

2) It's much MORE than PARAMOUNT figured for its opening weekend.

3) It only cost $140 million. Advertising is a lot, but at the outside, another 100 at most. So $240 million, which is far from $300.

4) But even if it was, movies with similar openings go on to make money far in excess of $300 million anyway. Trek won't have any trouble in this regard.

5) And just to put it in perspective further - domestically, this is Paramount's second highest opening weekend EVER for a live-action film, after Iron Man.

6) It has already handily beaten opening weekend for every previous Trek release; Nemesis is only being mentioned because it would've caused bad press, bringing this movie's total down. Not because anyone is excited that it's beating Nemesis. Of course it was going to beat Nemesis.

These are extremely impressive numbers, above all of the predictions of just about everyone in the industry, and easily enough to justify plenty of sequels.

Do some research before you freak out next time.

That much is certain where Vance's opinion on this sort of thing is concerned.

The folks who are desperately trying to spin this as anything other than an enormous success for the studio, at this point, keep demonstrating that they don't understand anything about the business aspects of this and are pretty much unfamiliar with recent box office data of any kind.

Funny post!!!

Correction....$112 MILLION worldwide, not $75 million. AND that's a lot more than I predicted, as well as many others including the Hollywood media pros. Not sure what your point is here, but ST making MORE than the top grossing ST film (STIV at $109 mill) ever in 4 days is pretty big news. Do you even have an idea what you are talking about??

I am not liking any of the Money news yet. I highly Doubt we will pass 150 here and 100 everywhere else. Not looking good imo.

Again: you're completely, 100% wrong. Go play around BoxOfficeMojo.com for a while looking at movies with similar opening weekends.

For instance, Batman Begins opened on a Wednesday, took in $72 million by that Sunday, and went on to gross $205 million domestically.

That's pretty much set in stone now, they'll get at least that much. The real question is will they get over that much because it gains decent legs or will it fizzle? It's gotta wade through a battlefield but it has all the chance in the world to approach and surpass $300.

Its ok but its now 50/50 to make $100 million worldwide which is the target rumored set by paramount, I was really hoping for 50 million in OW. It means Trek needs to break $200 million even more importantly now.
But..... It did.

76.5 + 35.5 = $112 Million worldwide opening weekend.

I'd say 112 million is roughly twice as much as 50 million. Can anyone with a mathematics degree check this for me?:guffaw:
