$76.5 million

An Unalloyed Triumph

These numbers are simply an unalloyed triumph for JJ and his team, for the cast, and for Paramount and their very critical decision to make Trek a summer tentpole movie. Had this come out in Christmastime, it would have made less, but the extra six months gave it time for a huge PR buildup that caused this wave to develop for the movie among average moviegoers.

The fans can't do this. The fans are the ones who saw Nemesis.

I also suspect, given the fabled multiplier, that this film will have legs through the month of May. Yes, it will get hammered by Terminator and Transformers, but this thing should earn its keep through May and turn in over 200 bills in take.

The only problem is that the expectation for XII will be phenomenal. People will expect Dark Knight. JJ just set the bar super high, and he has to really make sure that the writing gets tightened up considerably.

No writers' strike and no "intro story" constraints should help.

We finally have Star Trek back

Isn't it such a good feeling?

We have a Star Trek that most of the fans adore, the critics heaped near unanimous praise on, and now with the weekend box office we can add the the general public to that as well.

I just wanted to take a moment to revel in the amazement that we have STAR TREK BACK! :)

Re: An Unalloyed Triumph

Angels & Demons is next weekend--it probably will take #1, unless it does very poorly or Trek has better legs than we expect even after this.

I doubt it will beat A&D. A&D's has been tracking at least 50+ million. ST should drop at least 40-50% to $36-43 million. This is especially true since ST skewed older.

With all the talk of a new TV show produced by Paramount I have to ask if this is still Paramount's call? Isn't the TV license owned by CBS? Therefore, regardless of what Paramount might be planning, if CBS wants to cash in on a new Star Trek hype now or in the not too distant future, regardless if this is short sighted or not for the franchise as a whole, couldn't they just do that? That is, if CBS feels it would be profitable to make a new series say in a years time could Paramount stop them? Or, at a later point, commission CBS to make a new series, even if CBS wouldn't want to make one at its own behest?

With regard to the earnings of the movie, does this include international ticket sales or are they figured in at a later point?

Good news. A final domestic tally of more than $200 million looks like nearly a lock. It also has a decent chance at being the biggest May release for this year, with the other possibilities being Terminator and Up. Wolverine is pretty much out of the running.

This also means a new (reboot) TV series.

Sooner or later, yeah. They'll exploit the success in every way that makes sense.

1. Corporations do what is needed to make money. They let the lawyers draw up the paperwork. Who owns what is just a detail; nobody is going to let that stand in their way.

2. Yes, in theory CBS could do a Star Trek TV show now. But if you look at their demographic and show lineup, you'll see that Star Trek is entirely wrong for them. So maybe a new series would not appear on CBS, but CBS would get its share of the profits. They, like everyone else who stands to profit, would put the show where it makes the most sense. CBS is the place where it makes the least sense. Even the CW would be a better fit! :rommie:

3. The only reason a show would me made is to capitalize on the success of the movie(s). So CBS has no motive to do Star Trek their own way. They'd want it JJ Abram's way - the profitable way. And not on their own network. All they'd want is the money, so they're not going to hurt the chances of its success by insisting on anything silly.

There's also Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, although whether it'll perform as well in the summer as the first one did as a Christmas film remains to be seen.

Maybe CBS will do Star Trek CSI next season. ;)

Oh yes, that's just the shot in the arm, this new franchise needs. Feel free to try it, cause I am still too geeked out on two Imax showings in three days to. ;p

You know, I've liked Bruce Greenwood for years, and when I first saw David Caruso, I had to give a double take: I thought it was Bruce at first. Now I'm a fan of both of them. Just something about that kind of face and low tone of voice.
