When Pine DID do Shatner's Kirk

Pine was an excellent Kirk who did pull off the role without aping Shatner. But the most goose-pimply moment of the movie for me was at the very end when Kirk exits the turbo-lift onto the bridge and we see him in command gold for the first time. And, it wasn't just that he was wearing that tunic.

It was the swagger as he walked onto the bridge. The little jaunt in his step. The tilt of the head. The smirk. My God! At that moment, he was doing Shatner's Kirk. And, it was great! It startled me. I actually jumped a bit in my seat. I could watch those few seconds alone ten times over.

Did anyone else see that in that moment? Were there any other points in the film where you thought for a moment you were watching Shatner's Kirk (in a positive way, like the above)?

Well, that's when Kirk was coming into his own. After that mission he was all grown up.

The first time he sat in the chair, he had that sideways slouch down pat. The only thing he never did, that I was waiting for, was to pound the arm of the command chair with his fist instead of pressing a button. I love that move.

It was actually a little jarring. It was almost too Shatner after the comparatively nuanced performance that preceded it. From a strictly fanboy perspective though, it was nice to see.

The point I got the Shatner vibe was toward the end, he said Spock's name in "that way": the sharp "Spock!"

However, before he took formal command, and Kirk was slouching sideways in the chair..I felt that was overdone. People tend to over-play "the swagger" (something I never saw that much of). Kirk was confident not cocky. That's Classic Kirk, something that came though at the end...

But the "buckle up"...not Kirk. lol

The way he was speaking during the Kobiyashi Maru test was the only time I felt he did the Shatner voice. The deep intake of air before the staccato syllable pronounciation.

And of course, the legs crossed at the end. Awesome.

I agree about the end scene. Also, the way he kind of paused, then said "Bones!" in this really quick way was very Shatner IMO. That whole sequence felt like the point where Pine let himself channel Shatner a bit. It was great to see.

yep definitely that ending scene with him in the gold uniform. Just the way he entered the bridge, looked around, that was all shatner. And when he sat in the chair, just like shatner, it gave me goosebumps.

Yes. Shatner seemed to contemplate his words before he said them. Pine did that perfectly when he looked down,paused, then said ,"Bones". It was Shatner to the tenth power!

That's funny, on my movie screen, the command color was green.


A "gold" star to the whoever made that print. They obviously knew what color it was supposed to be.


Now I know what Chekov was complaining to La Salle about when he said "I'm not that gween".

My first time was the Kobayashi Maru test as well. Heck, while the apple and the way he sat in the chair cemented Shatner, the fact that Pine had outwitted a machine Shat-style pretty much sealed the deal.

Yeah, the Kobyashi Maru test and the final scene were both bits of Shatner impersonation.

To me, the most Shat-channelling part was the way he lounged in the chair at the end with his legs crossed. He just did it chillingly perfect.

There were other moments where he Shatted a scene, the Kobyashi Maru notably and, the parts where he bantered with Spock and Bones.
