The Film started and I was bit apprehensive. (Spoilers ahead)











But when I saw Kirk taking his Kobayashi Maru test and his nonchalant attitude I was groaning inside. But about 20 seconds into the seen I noticed that he was sitting on the simulator and just eating an apple while giving out orders. I started cracking up and got shushed lol. I had a total flashback to when Kirk Prime with a flashy grin and gleam in his eye explains to a certain Vulcan Lt. how he "beat" the test as he sits and eats a Genesis apple. That was the moment Pine really became Kirk to me and from that point on he nailed it. It wasn't so much that they showed Kirk likes apples it was just kind of a bridging the character moment for me. I don't know why I was so tickled by it but i thought i would share one of my favorite momemnts from the movie with you guys and see if anyone else felt the same way.

The Kobayashi Maru sequence was total ass. The way it played out it's completely obvious Kirk sabotaged it. He waits until the computers temporarily shut down and restart before issuing orders which ends the simulation way too easily? And he thought no one would notice? I always had the impression that Jim Kirk was a bit more professional than that.

Plus, there's the whole problem of it starting off with the same sound effects from TWOK, which is kind of cool. But then, when we see the viewscreen, it's completely new footage as opposed to a recreation of the stock footage from TMP that was used in TWOK. The fuck?

And don't get me started on the idea of Spock programming the simulation. Small universe syndrome, anyone?

Of course, this isn't how Kirk Prime may have done it. This is how Kirk did it in THIS timeline.

Still, don't you think you'd play it a little more poker-faced if you're pulling off a stunt like that? I mean, if I'm one of those supervising the simulation, and I see Kirk acting like that, I'm going to stop the simulation and ask him why he's being so flippant. I'm letting him take it a third time. Shouldn't he be taking it more seriously? Come to think of it I'd have probably just stopped it right there.

Further, to me anyway, Pine seemed to be playing it as if Kirk may have had a few Budweiser Classics before the simulation. Just a little drunken-like.

You can say he wanted to get caught to make a point, but I don't buy that. Not that Kirk. Not at that time.

Sorry, that scene didn't work for me at all. Apple or not. Disappointing. Glad it was so short.

Interesting comment my friend made. She said that Spock mentions that he never took the Kobayashi Maru in TWOK, and now we know why. Because he wrote the thing! I thought that was very cool.

My take on it is that there was no specific rule prohibiting what he did. As such, the Academy, including Spock, simoky assumed it couldn't be done. As for violating the honor code, it was strongly implied that Kirk had an argument prepared for the hearing and was ready to use it. It was all planned out by Kirk from the start.

Indeed. However, I think that Spock threw a shoe into it when he brought up Kirks father, so it wasn't
going to plain after that point because it weakened his argument.

And, as someone who used the "there is no rule against it" position many times in high school, I can vouch for it's effectiveness. Even if it isn't liked by school staff.

I loved that scene, as someone who knew what was going to happen beforehand it was hilarious, and somone who didn't must have known he had a trick up his sleeve. Uhura's demeanor during the whole thing was perfect, and I just loved the "They're arming phasers and photon torpedoes," "Who cares? It'll be alright!" sequence.

I loved this part of the film. The way Kirk was acting cocky, the way he was shooting down ships with his finger was perfect.

I don't really understand why you guys have a problem with it. He was shooting down the Klingon ships with a single torpedo for each ship. He knew he was going to get caught. He was being cocky because he knew he was about to win the no win scenario, something no one else had ever done, even if he did have to cheat to do it.

I guess I'm in a minority here not liking it. I'll have to see it again and see what I think. The whole scene almost seemed like a parody of Kirk's luck over the years in the other timeline. Especially casually eating an apple and the line you mention above.
Maybe he wanted to raise suspicion and get caught, but why any of the observers would've allowed the simulation to continue when he's obviously not taking it seriously is hard to believe.
I thought for a minute when the simulation stopped that someone did stop it and was going to ask him about his strange behavior and what was up.

I liked this scene, thought it was pretty cool.

The way that this Kirk did it was great. Cocky, knew he was going to pass etc. However..:


All these people complaining it was too brief, comical. Its a completley different Kirk and universe to boot. Since Spock accidentally changed the past timeline, creating a kind of alternate 1985 tangent, this is a different Kirk, different influences and experiences have shaped this Kirk to what had Prime kirk.

I have no problem with it, granted ive always had Shats Kirks version in my head since i was a kid, so no big deal.

It struck me as a very Kirk thing to do to flaunt that he was "cheating". After all, his objection to the test meant that he didn't see it as cheating.

Nowhere before is it suggested that he tried to cover up his cheating - he merely made it an 'alternative strategy'. We knew they found out about it - he says in TWOK he got a commendation for original thinking.

It actually made perfect sense - Spock oversees the thing both here and in TWOK, and never took the test himself. Nitpicking for the sake of it, anyone?

One more thing: It is not uncommon for Spock to be involved in such things. In Star Trek V, Spock was the one who designed and tested the Brig that they later escape from.

Yeah, our audience loved that too, i loved hearing that reaction in a Trek movie, never before has mass laughter been present in a trek movie thaet i can remember. There were a number of scenes that got big laughs.

notably, the whole scene where McCoy infects Kirk with the virus to get him aboard. Kirks symptoms getting worse, swolen hands and tougue, blind in left eye etc, i loved that, it was played so well.



And the brigg in ST:V, yeah, i got that reference too, ive even posted that in the "Moments for the trekkies" thread. I picked up on it as soon as Spock stood up from the console in the viewing area.

There's video cutscenes of a game called Star TRek:Starfleet Academy, where a cadet beats the Kobayashi Maru test in the same way that Kirk did. This was by making the Klingons respect THE GREAT Captain Kirk and then help in the rescue. I think the scene would have been better to have reflected the simulation we saw in TWOK and then Kirk beat it (to the writers discression).

I loved the apple eating scene - TWOK (my fav movie) was a great tip-of-the-hat.

I wouldn't have thought that he was as sloppy about it as he was in the movie. You know what, I think has made me finally understand what it means to have my childhood raped.

Obviously, they wouldn't reuse the TMP footage, but I did expect them to recreate with CGI to look exactly similar.

Spock ovesaw the thing in TWOK because they were cadets under his command, and he never took the test because his career was focused on science. Now having him be the programmer of the program is as stupid an idea as Anakin Skywalker building C-3PO.
