A thing I had a problem with (spoilers)

GeneHunt

Commander
Red Shirt
When Spock kicks Kirk off the ship:

WTF??? so im supposed to believe he jetisoned Kirk onto a planet that contains hostile monsters and has an enviroment hardly suitable for human life. Whats more the crew had nothing to say about it not even McCoy.

Seems like that has to be a court martial offense, why not just throw him in the brig?

Or am I missing something?

While I agree, throwing him in the brig was a more logical approach he did throw him as close as possible to a Federation outpost on the planet (or is it moon ?)...
At least there is that.

And there was also the fact that Spock was not in the best of emotional and mental conditions. 6 billion dead, Vulcan destroyed and all...

Yeah that and a few other things too...like that big ship didn't have any holding cells?

Just for clarity though that was still an excellent movie.

Don't forget, the Pod computer tried to tell Kirk to remain in the Pod until he is picked up by Starfleet.

It did? I missed that, thanks for clearing that up, its not so bad then. Still extreamly irresponsible of Spock though.

McCoy did complain! Kirk basically stowed away on the ship, despite being in Starfleet. Kir's outburst on the bridge led Spock to believe he was a danger to the crew and he jettisoned him to a Starfleet outpost. Kirk did mention it might be a violation on the treatment of prisoners, but hey, captain's discretion eh? Kirk broke worse rules, even in the 80s movies.

RAMA

Yeah, it was silly. To be fair, Kirk noted that in his log immediately prior to being attacked by Snow Monster #1.

You have to remember the emotional pressure Spock was under, loosing his mother, and his home, that and the telepathic effect of almost 6 Billion Vulcans dying...

It was a bit dumb, for sure...but was it as difficult to believe as Kirk landing on not only the same planet as old Spock, but also within 200 or so metres of him? Then out of the entire 360 possible degrees, electing to run in a precise trajectory towards Spock's cave?

Hear hear!

That and you basically have a ship full of cadets who are used to following the orders of their instructor. would not happen with a veteran crew.

Well when you have JJ abrams involved, you get Emo Spock!

How come we didn't get Emo Spock then ? Weird...

And it's nice that you think the death of 6 billion Vulcan, a mom and a planet should leave Spock playing chess with the computer as if nothing happened.

Yes, you clearly know your Spock.

Well, this could be an incident that contributes to (this) Spock not wanting command. At that point in his life, he may know he's too much of a ticking time bomb with his emotions.
I mean the whole incident is irresponsible. Doesn't he leave his command to save his mother? What ever happened to the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few?
Maybe we're unfairly comparing his actions to what a more mature Spock (one we know better) would've done, too.

Remember, he wasn't just trying to save his mother, he was also trying to rescue the other high muckety-mucks of Vulcan society so that their culture would survive. Considering that Starfleet exists in large part to protect Federation worlds and civilizations, this would be an easily justifiable decision by Spock.
