    Maybe.
Did it delete 40 years of Trek history?
No? Then why should you give a fuck?

    EDIT!
There should be a winking smiley on the end of that last sentence. I'm not being serious or challenging there.

Just got back and I voted excellent. Saw it on IMAX and man it beautiful!!!!

A few nitpicks but not big enough to change my vote:
Rapid rise through the ranks (understandable from a story/pacing standpoint)

The status of the Romulans was a bit murky. Did Pike know they were Vulcan off shoots?

Delta Vegas location ( though what someone said up thread about Vulcans destruction being representational in Spocks meld makes sense.)

Overall it was great, the audience clapped at the end. My non trekkie wife gave it an A.

On the writing side: Nice to see they took chances rather than retreading well covered ground. Great characterization and a nice blend of old and new catch phrases.

If anything, one must see this on IMAX at least once. Phenomenal! Star Trek has prospered and will continue to live long with the success of the film!

    Hear, hear!

I couldn't agree more. The thing is, these problems in the film aren't exactly cleverly hidden, and you're not the first nor the last to point them out (although you do so with great pith). So what mystifies me is how so many people posting seem not to notice them, or at least not to be bothered by them.

I don't think that aspect was a studio mandate, but either way, I don't really follow you here. Far from being burdensome or excessive, Spock's meld with Kirk was just about the most cursory exposition you could ask for. It was incredibly pared down. Take even that away, and you'd have a big insane genocidal villain flying around with no explanation at all. (Unless you're proposing that that villain should have been ditched as well. Which isn't necessarily a bad idea, but it would mean rewriting the whole story from square one.)

Absolutely. (I'd say more Star Wars than Terminator, but that's by no means an improvement.)

Emotionally speaking, the Kelvin scenes may well have been the high point of the film. But seriously, celebrating love or friendship is not exactly an insightful social commentary. And if you don't like social commentary, what on earth drew you to Trek in the first place? It's at the heart and soul of the concept.

Hmm. I come at this from the opposite angle. It doesn't seem worth the effort to come up with a whole list of excuses for the film's flaws, just to convince myself it's enjoyable.

Hey, way to express an opinion by insulting vast numbers of strangers. With skills like that, you should be a talk radio host.

But seriously... there's a lot more to aspire to in this world than being "normal."

And BTW, why is the "young crowd" (wherever you may draw that line) more important, pray tell?...

No, you're not crazy. It is "a pointless action flick fo rthe average consumer." (And some folks actually seem to take pride in being that "average consumer," given the post quoted just above.)

And I'm in the camp that thinks a reboot was totally unnecessary; I'd have preferred a genuine prequel. But if it was to be a reboot, at least it could have been a smart one. This? Wasn't.

Well, in point of fact, he does have criticisms of the story, as do a lot of us, so it's odd that you started off by arguing with a straw man.

But FWIW, the fictional timeline and related backstory isn't just "in someone's head." It's the cumulative result of all the interesting, relevant details from past stories—it's what defines the shape of the mythos itself (or the "franchise," if you prefer corporate lingo). Geeky or not, it is what it is, and it's perfectly legitimate to say it's worth preserving.

Hmm. Didn't actually notice that. Kind of a nice touch, if so... although for strict accuracy's sake she should have been carrying a "Cage"-era communicator, right?

Please, explain where you saw the "intelligent" part come in.

I'm not trying to be snarky. But honestly, the absence of that element is one of my key problems with the film.

It pretty much invalidates all prior Trek, save for the "alternate universe" cop-out.

As for why I "give a fuck" (if we must become so crass), I just found the production design to be lazy and uninspired. I was expecting something a bit more futuristic.

Plus, they filmed it at an Anheuser-Busch brewery, and all they make is watery beer.

    FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!

This movie was ridiculously EPIC! So epic, that the word "epic" doesn't do it justice! The visual treatments were OUTSTANDING, especially for warp! And I love how the entire time-travel thing cleverly explains why their trek-verse was different...

    however...

What about the time-correcting federation faction that we've seen in boy Voyager and Enterprise, hmm??? Not exactly temporal prime directive-friendly...

Other than that, I give this movie 2 thumbs, and all my other fingers and toes up! Can't wait to re-watch in imax!

and as for the skeptics, JUST WATCH...

I wish they kept the story line alive. I miss the old story line and when the stories dealt with questions of science, ideals or philosophy. Now its been replaced by stories reduced flashy action. There seemed to be no point.

    Above average.

Really surprised how much I enjoyed it.

Great first half, but the Nimoy scenes were sadly not as good, a real disappointment for a TOS lover like myself.

Well done to the creative team for injecting the fun back into Trek.

    Go see it!

Well... yes and no. In Nero's time, there is a Vulcan, but no Romulus. In this time, no Vulcan, but there is a Romulus.

I went for above average, because I want to be optimistic for the future of Trek and I really liked the new version of the characters. I'll not say anything about the logical flaws or things that were not made clear, since others have written about them much better than what I can.
What I cannot digest is the destruction of Vulcan, I'm one of those that saw in Vulcan something more than just a planet of the Federation and it will take me a long time to adapt to it.
