The Official: Niners What did You Think of the ST Movie Thread

Hmm, this is interesting. I'm curious to see what other Niners will think of the film.

It was a fun movie and I think it will probably succeed in its mission to revitalise the franchise. It looked good and the music was fine in my opinion.

The acting was fine, the only character I didn't really care for was what theyd did to Chekov. Bana's acting was fine but he was not given anywhere near enough screen time for him to become a memorable villain. Really you could have had a relative no-name in the role without a problem, it was a bit of a waste of an actor of Bana's talents.

I have several issues with certain plot points but I don't know how much I can put here.

Overall my negatives were outweighed by the positives of the movie and I rated it above average and out of the eleven movies I'd rate it my sixth favourite.

Just got back from it. GOOD...... but not great. I can confidently say it isn't as good as Wrath of Khan or First Contact, but I guess I can put it ahead of the rest. Still having a little trouble fully embracing as part of the franchise. A big part of that is the aesthetics. The bridge is just plain fugly and seriously, what the crap is up with the boiler room engineering? Hell, for all the show's flaws, the NX-01's interiors were better than this. The time travel stuff doesn't sit entirely well with me, but I can understand why it was done, as it gives them the freedom to do whatever they want in subsequent films. I remember feeling like "that freaking ROCKED!" after seeing First Contact for the first time back in '96. This failed to do the same. Then again, I essentially went into First Contact blind, and it was my first Trek film on the big screen, whereas here I felt like I had already seen 75% of the scenes in the movie already due to all the preview photos, trailers, etc. I dunno. I'll be seeing it again on Sunday so hopefully I'll like it more the second time around.

Oh, and my biggest gripe with the movie... ENOUGH WITH THE FUCKING LENS FLARES! Jesus, people!!!!

GOOD...... but not great.

I liked it, but yup, it could have been better. I think the plot could have been tighter, there were a lot of things that they could have done without in favour of more story and character development.

Awesome. I went in skeptical expecting another Nemesis or Insurrection but I was completely blown away.

I agree somewhat. Nero just doesn't come across as Romulan enough. He was a morph of Chang and Khan. Do all Romulans in the future have those freaky tats?

McCoy wasn't funny enough but those are minutiae compared to the whole

I agree 100%. Think of the challenge Abrams faced in making this movie: Revitalizing an aging franchise using unknown actors.

He hit a grand slam home run. The movie is fun, intelligent, poignant, and awesome. I will see it again.

Agree. I'm goin again too. I hadn't been this pumped about Trek since........KHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN

As a blockbuster, it achieved all its goals including that of opening the minds of an audience who may have never given Star Trek a chance before today. Kudos!

As a Star Trek movie, there are some elements missing that prevents it from being considered a timeless Trek movie. For example, I'm a little sad that Wall-E has more sci-fi elements than this movie :(

Well we thought the film was wicked excellent and the franchise has been been reinvented. The new Kirk is everything you come to expect and this Cris Pine nails it.

The whole mythos of early ST is just incredibly explained as 'just' part of a bigger story. Niners will love this film...I don't want to reveal any spoilers but someone of significance orders a drink that was Quarks specialty.

OK as a Niner why did I like this film? Well like DS9 this film was an ensemble effort...in this film even Sulu had an incredible very entertaining part.

Most films require a couple 3 stars to carry the movie but a big character rich story/franchise like ST can benifit for an ensemble effort.

Often time stars can get so big they effect the over all story and after several re-writes you end of with a Nemisis type film. With successful ensemble casting you always leave the public hungry for more.

I bet many of you wish your favorite DS9 star got more face time...well that's what I mean.

What drink was that?

Cardassian Sunrise?

I loved that, because I love Cardies.

Anyway, I'm a Niner...and I think the new film rocks. Seen it twice so far, am going again tomorrow. It's exciting!!!!

^ There was some type of sunrise drink at Quark's but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a Cardassian sunrise.

I will post the same thing I posted on another forum:

I have to say, I mostly enjoyed it. But there are some nitpicks here and there, my biggest (and the one no one else than me seems to care about)

Since when do you give an un-commissioned Cadet the command of a Starship? Okay, maybe they gave him a special commission as an officer. Okay, maybe they would have fast-tracked him into Command Duty in his career. Okay, MAYBE they would have put him for recommendation for an early command... But the Flagship of the Federation, right off the bat?

I though you needed at least some experience in a Command position before being given such responsibility (and it's a HUGE responsibility)

also

They have UNCOMMISSIONNED (or newly commissionned, or disgraced) officers serving full-time as the senior officers of the Flagship?! Same thing about up-there. Even if they are talented and gifted, they are still green peoples. Only Spock and Scotty are actually experienced officers

I liked and I am eager to see more. :techman:

Absolutely. There was one line that he delivered that I immediately thought "He is Kirk, no question."
