Jack Bauer’s body, believed to be mortally wounded by a gunshot to the back of the head, was put inside of a stasis canister in the early twenty-first century. So was the body of the man who had killed Jack’s daughter, and her child. His name was Thomas Devron. He was part of a cabal to replace all the world’s rulers with clones.

Then, three hundred years in the future, the canisters that contained Bauer and Devron, which had been lost through time, were found. Upon having his own wound repaired by Doctor Julian Bashir, Devron attacked Bashir, killed him, and then escaped the Starfleet medical center he had been brought to at a complex in twenty-fourth century Siberia.

Upon finding historic data about Jack Bauer, Admiral Picard ordered that he too, Jack Bauer, be brought back from the “dead”. Captain Beverly Crusher-Picard, now the wife of Admiral Picard, operated on and was able to remove the bullet from back of Jack's head. Bauer has now been enlisted to track down the escaped murderer of Bashir; Thomas Devron.

We now continue…

The shuttle-craft, which was piloted by an attractive young woman, made its way from the base in Siberia to the giant mushroom shaped Starbase in orbit of Earth. Jack Bauer, who sat next to the young lieutenant in the passenger seat, looked out the window in sheer awe. This was his first time Jack had been outside of the base in Siberia, and as the shuttle climbed up and through the atmosphere, he could only shake his head in amazement at the advances made since the twenty-first century.

Then he looked out the main viewing window, and saw the giant mushroom shaped structure that was their destination.

“Holy shit,” Jack whispered.

“I’m sorry sir?” The young lady responded.

“Oh,” Jack said to her, “I was just making a small comment. That thing is huge.”

“Actually,” she said, with a nice smile, “it's really only one of the midsized Star-bases.”

“I’m sorry,” Jack said to her, “I didn’t quite catch your name back there.”

“My name is Lieutenant Linda Keller,” she said to Jack. “Admiral Picard had some administrative details to work out in San Francisco, so I was asked to bring you up to the Starbase. I work directly for the Admiral, so do not worry, he isn’t just assigning you with busy work with me. Apparently the Admiral has something up here he wants us to get, and more importantly, you’re associate will be up here soon as well.”

“My associate,” Jack said softly. “I hope he doesn’t mean partner. I’ve seen to many of them, friends, die over the years. That’s why I learned to work alone.”

“He believes that once you leave the confines of the Earth system,” Keller told Jack, “you’ll need someone who knows where they are going to be your guide.”

Jack thought for a moment. It did make sense, he realized. It wasn’t like he was going to be able to break in to a car, hot wire it , and drive somewhere to get answers. The playing field of Earth had just been enlarged by about a factor of a zillion.

“So,” Jack said to Keller, “if you’re not going to be my associate, then who is?”

“Now that,” Keller said to Jack, “I do not know. The Admiral said he would beam up to the Starbase once he had taken care of that issue. I guess we’ll know then.”

Jack nodded. Picard was personally picking out Jack’s partner, and was also no doubt, trying to procure a mode of travel. But one part of Keller’s last statement confused Jack.

“You said the Admiral would beam-up?” Jack asked. “What does that mean exactly?”

Keller looked at Jack and realized, again, just how confused he must have really been, since being revived. She explained the concept of the Transporter. Upon hearing it, Jack responded with two words when asked if he wanted to try being beamed somewhere.

“F-ck no.”

Admiral Picard had made covert contact with Captain Wiliam T. Riker. Riker, who was Picard’s former first officer when they had served together earlier in their careers, met Picard at the Golden Gate Bridge. The two long time friends strolled slowly along the bridge, nearing its apex. They were already in deep conversation.

“So,” Riker said to Picard, “you’re hoping this Jack Bauer can track down this killer before he can do any more harm.”

“Yes,” Picard replied. “Earth, and more importantly, we as a society have evolved much in the past three-hundred years; Wil. This man, Jack Bauer, was considered a hero in his time. Yet, as I read about his accolades and methods, I can not help but wonder what kind of society it was, back in those days.”

“It was a different time,” Riker agreed. “But if Bauer was able to keep his nation state, America, safe in those times? Then who are we to judge his actions? And if this Thomas Devron is as ruthless as you say he is, then who better to bring him in?”

“Agreed,” Picard said. “Now, were you able to help with my two requests?”

Riker nodded.

“Yes, I was.” Riker told Picard. “You wanted me to find you an officer, with a chip on his shoulder, a little rough around the edges, who would be able to assist Bauer, but also keep Bauer in check.”

“Precisely,” Picard said. “I think Bauer will would work easier with someone from our time who, at least superficially, shared some of Bauer’s traits, which include, questioning all authority at times.”

“Well,” Riker said with a slight chuckle, “Mnu Subrelqui is exactly that kind of person. He punched his Captain, McGregor; twice. He was also running an illegal Dom-jot tournament at his last command. The only reason we haven’t kicked him out of Starfleet is because he is darn good at what he does. He can pilot a starship, or a shuttle, or any alien vessel, with expertise that even Captain Paris would envy.”

“Paris is a legend,” Picard acknowledged. “Though, I might add, I once had a first officer who could pilot anything that could fly as well. What about the package?”

“I was able to get her here pretty fast. You know,” Riker said, “I am not happy with letting them use her. I paid for that ship with a big chuck of credits. I even had to cash in my Triple-Dabo coupon with Quark to scrape up the last round of credits.”

“But don’t forget that I,” Picard added, “used my pull to get it on the market for you.”

“You did indeed,” Riker added with a warm smile.

The ship they were referring to was only the second of its kind. Its sister ship was destroyed by Riker during the Romulan cabal to invade Vulcan, many years in the past now. Both ships were commissioned by a Feringi smuggler. He was killed while attacking the Enterprise-D with the black, and very sleek, “muscle” ship. Riker had always secretly desired to attain one, and was quite happy to find that Starfleet had confiscated the sister ship and had stored it in a secured Starfleet wrecking yard. Riker, with Picard’s help, was able to ‘procure’ the ship for his own private collection.

“Do you think,” Picard said to Riker, “that this Mnu Subrelqui will be able to fly it?”

Figures Riker would want that particular ship. And I'm interested in this Mnu Subrelqui character? Is he human? Just curious.

He is a counterpart to an alien who is actually the creation of another TREK writer named MIRANDA FAVE. Mnu, or Stan as he will soon be called by Jack, has limited telepathic ability. Miranda created him as a naive character, fun and sprite. In this universe, the Jack Bauer/Trek story, he will be a polar opposite. He will be a rough-neck, even with a goatee.

His appearence is roughly aquatic. Very alien looking, which I am sure will be a reason for humor between he and Jack.

In true 24 fashion there is more going on here than meets the eye. Who is this person watching Picard and Riker? What is Devon really up to and how many people will Jack Bauer have to torture to get to the truth?

Fun stuff.

Bauer has now been enlisted to track down the escaped murderer of Bashir; Thomas Devron.

We now continue…

The massive space station that Jack Bauer found himself walking through was a complete structural miracle, in his eyes. Perhaps the citizens of the twenty-fourth century found such a complex passé, but for Jack, it was a wonder for the eyes. Jack also found himself in the uniform of the time; black and gray. It was a good fit. But somehow Jack knew that once he was off trying to hunt down Devron, he would be right back into his Levis and button downed shirt.

Upon their arriving at the massive mushroom shaped Starbase in orbit of Earth two hours earlier, Lt. Linda Keller, Jack’s guide, had taken him to a wardrobe enclave where he was fitted with one of the black/gray uniforms he had seen the Starfleet officers wearing. Picard had been able to pull strings, and Jack’s rank, based on time in service three-hundred years earlier, was set at Lieutenant. It was limited in scope, but Jack wouldn’t lie; he liked the pips.

“Where is the Admiral?” Jack asked Keller as they walked through the massive Promenade.

“He will be arriving soon,” Keller said to Jack. “So you will have to suffer through my care for a little while longer.”

“Oh please,” Jack said to her with a smile. “You’re doing just fine. But I fear Devron is going to attack again soon, and all I am doing is walking around, seeing the sights, and trying on uniforms.”

“I know you’re anxious to get going,” Keller said. “But once the Admiral gets up here, and he signs off on the Trump-Card, you’ll be set to go.”

“What is the Trump-Card?” Jack asked.

“You will see soon enough,” she told him as they entered the lower mooring platform of the massive station.

There were at least twenty smaller ships docked at various platforms. Force fields, and other means, held the ships to their docking platforms. Jack compared the experience of walking through the mooring station to that of walking through the massive lower-bay of an aircraft carrier; though on a scale of about 1000 to 1, at least it seemed that way. That’s how huge the station was.

The various ships were impressive to look at. Add to that the amount of hustle-and-bustle of the work going on around them, the coming and goings of passengers, the echoing throng of voices, and the entire place was definitely alive with activity. He half expected to see the Millennium Falcon, with Chewbacca atop her yelling at Han-Solo, while the two argued over how to repair their ship. That’s how fantastic the situation Jack found himself in. It was as if he had entered a Star Wars movie.

But one ship caught Jack’s eyes more than the others. It actually looked like something Harrison Ford would have been zipping around in. It looked like it had been inspired by one of ZZTOPS’s album covers. The ship oozed muscle car, even though Jack knew it was really a space ship. But something made it stand out from all the rest; it looked mean.

“What kind of ship is that?” Jack asked as he pointed over at the dark, sleek, ship.

“Funny you should ask,” Lt. Keller said with a smile, “It’s your ship.”

As they walked on to the docking platform that led to the Trump-Card, they found three old fashioned Navy sea-bags, obviously stuffed with clothing, stack outside the main entrance.

“What are those for?” Jack asked.

Then a gruff voice answered from behind Jack and Keller.

“They’re mine,” the voice said. “Touch them at your own peril.”

Jack turned to see the most alien looking being he had seen since his awakening. The alien had big eyes, and looked like one of the flute players in the cantina band in one of the old STAR WARS movies. Maybe he had died, Jack thought, and heaven was a Lucasfilms production.

“I assume,” Lt. Keller said, “that you’re here to accompany Lt. Bauer on his mission to apprehend Thomas Devron?”

The alien, who wore a heavy long overcoat, and who also puffed on a large cigar, smelt like last year’s garbage. He was not pleasant looking at all. He walked over to Keller.

“I am Lieutenant Mnu Subrelqui,” he told her in a scruffy sounding voice, “you call me Stan. Picard just sprang me from the minimum security establishment in Sydney. And yes, I am here to act as a nurse-maid for this huuuman. If you need me to bathe him, and feed him, forget it.”

Jack did not like the sound of that at all. He got into the face of his new partner.

“Look,” Jack said, “I do not need a god-damn nurse-maid. I’m here trying to stop a killer from killing again. And if you have a problem with that, I need to know now.” And then Jack sniffed the smoke from Stan’s cigar. “Is that Fonesca-Cedar?” Jack added.

“No, it’s Fonesca-Cubano,” Stan said.

“Those are illegal,” Jack began to say. “Let me guess, in these times, there is no embargo against Cuba.”

“I am not sure what that means, and I don’t care,” Stan said.

“Do you have more?” Jack asked.

Stan pointed at the bottom sea-bag.

“Are they from one of those replicators Lt. Keller got my coffee from earlier?” Jack asked as Stan took one of the cigars out of a pocket inside his jacket, and handed it to Jack to inspect.

“No,” Stan said. “I got a supplier on Deep Space Nine,” Stan said. “This stuff is real.”

“Do you mind?” Jack asked.

Stan shook his head. “No,” Stan replied, “first one is on the house. You enjoy cigars?”

“Fuck yeah,” Jack said as he bit the tip off and Stan offered a light.

“You two are sick,” Lt. Keller said as she coughed on some of the smoke. “And in case you forgot, Lt Stan, smoking any substance is against the rules while in the docking-port.”

“Hasn’t stopped me before,” Stan said. He held out his hand toward Jack. “As I told miss prissy-pussy here, my name is Lieutenant Mnu Subrelqui. I will be upfront with you one hundred percent of the time; I expect the same from you. Call me Stan, or we will not get along at all.”

Jack took Stan’s hand in to his and they shook hands.

“Jack Bauer,” Jack said to Stan. “I want to find the son-of-a-bitch who killed my daughter and grandchild, and,” Jack paused so as to filter his words, “bring him to justice.”

“Very well put,” Admiral Picard said as he walked up to Jack, Stan and Keller, as they still stood outside the Trump-Card. He looked to Keller. “Thank you for escorting Lt. Bauer up here, and keeping an eye on him. You are dismissed.”

“Good luck with your mission,” Keller said to Jack. Then she leaned in and kissed Jack on the cheek.

She turned to leave when Stan grabbed her by the arm, swung her around, dipped her as if they were dancing, and planted a kiss on her lips. Then he let her back up.

“That was uncalled for,” Picard stated in a matter-of-fact tone.

“It’s alright admiral,” Keller said, in obvious approval of what had just happened. “No harm was done.”

She winked at Stan and then headed back down the walkway, and disappeared into the throng of people walking by.

“Alright,” Picard told Stan and Jack, “I’ve signed off on the protocols. You pretty much have a blank card, and can go where ever your search takes you.” Picard said.

“Jack,” Stan said, “when was the last time you were with a woman?”

“Um,” Jack said, taken aback by the question.

“Sir,” Stan said to Picard, “can we stop over at Risa? There are a couple of Bajoran sisters who I think…”

Picard cut Stan off. “We don’t have time for that. Just find Thomas Devron, and remember; bring him back alive.”

Jack bowed his head, but bringing back Devron was the last thing on Jack’s mind. And, unknown to Jack, Stan, who could read his mind, now knew this as well.

--

Moments later, while standing near one of the viewing ports, Picard watched as the Trump-Card exited the Starbase. It was against Starfleet rules for ships to engage their warp engines so close to traffic, but it did not surprise Picard one bit when the Trump-Card became a streak of light and was gone. Picard even smiled at the sight.

Captain Beverly Crusher was saddened as she entered one of the medical operations centers. One of the Doctors, whom Beverly had known since the Enterprise- D, Commander Selar, was dead. Her motionless body was on a grav-bed. Apparently she had suffered a rare Vulcan embolism, and collapsed, and died instantly. Crusher could only shake her head in disbelief.

I didn't even need to click on the link to know that Selar's death was hardly natural. I'm interested in seeing whose pulling the strings of this mission.

Looks like Bauer and Stan will get along just fine. Somehow I wish Keller would have tagged along too. I think it would be intersting to see Bauer interact with more straight-cut 24th century characters.

One little note at the end. I was pretty sure Selar was a doctor, not a nurse.

Thanks..you are right about Selar, I have fixed that.

And as for Lt. Keller? 24 has that great ability of having characters coming and going. I have a feeling we will be seeing her again very soon.

OMG! First, for making my cute loveable Stan so badass! However, I find myself finding him very loveable too. That was all kinds of awesome.

But more importantly, OMG, the reveal in the link :cardie: :cardie: ooooooooh! All kinds of excitement. Cool.

Imagining Stan puffing a Cubano cigar is worth the price of admission. But in true 24 fashion, you never know what is going to happen next. Do I know where this story is going? I actually do. And the twists and turns it will take, while in the awesome playground of STAR TREK, will be fun to spin.

She subsequently suffered what appeared to be an embolism, and died. It would was later revealed (only to the readers of the story) that unknown agents had arranged her death to keep the information she had found secret.

Now, Jack Bauer and Stan have embarked on a quest to bring Thomas Devron to justice. For Bauer, it is a mission of revenge.

We now continue…

The front door of the modest two room condo slowly opened. A man, holding a gun, and prepared to use it, made his way into the home. His name was Jack Bauer, and the home he was entering belonged to his daughter Kim, her husband Steve, and their infant daughter Teri.

Jack did not need a key to open the door, nor did he have to knock. The door was already open, though just a little. The red-alert signs were going off in Jack’s head. Usually upon coming onto a scene as this one, Jack would take a more covert course of action. But this was his daughter’s home; and time wasn’t on his side.

How he came to be in Odessa Texas was simple enough. Thomas Devron, the last living member of a conspiracy that had sought to replace the world’s leaders with clones, had come to this town to escape American, via train, down into Mexico. Somehow Devron had obtained information that Jack’s daughter jus happened to live in Odessa as well. Jack had tried to call and warn Kim, but failed.

As Jack entered the home he felt anger as he came across the dead body of Kim’s husband on the ground, facing up. Steve had been stabbed several times, and his throat had been slit as well. Jack reached down and touched the pool of blood to find it had started to dry already. Steve had been dead for at least half-an-hour. There was no time to waste. Jack doubted that Devron would have stayed this long.

“Kim!” Jack called out. “Are you here?” he called out again. He searched the living room, the kitchen, the baby’s room, and then, to his horror, as he entered Kim and Steve’s room, Jack felt as if his heart wanted to explode.

Kim’s body was motionless, naked from the waste down. Her body was in a fetal position, clutching the lifeless body of her infant. Jack collapsed to his knees. Kim and little Teri were all that he had left in the world to live for; and now they were gone. He forced himself to look at Kim’s body. He had to. He had to look at death in the face one more time. He had to feel the pain.

It was clear that Devron had brutalized Kim with out remorse. He had forced himself upon her, in front of her child, and then killed the two of them. The only evidence that Jack needed to know it was Devron was the scar on Kim’s cheek, and the scar on little Teri’s cheek as well. Thomas Devron had long ago had a ring on his middle finger, with a raised diamond mount in the shape of a snake’s tongue. When ever Devron killed, he would slug his victim in the face, leaving the scar.

Jack wanted to die. He put his own gun to his head and prepared to fire. But be couldn’t, not now. He had one more task to complete before he would take his life; he had to find Devron and make him pay with his life. Usually Jack did not cave into revenge, but now he would spend the rest of his life hunting Devron down; or die trying.

--

An FBI agent stood outside of Kim’s home, next to a current year Ford SUV. He had been assigned to escort Jack to Odessa, and then help the former CTU agent try and find Devron. The agent’s name was agent Lenny Carson. He was a middle aged black man, and over the past two days had befriended Bauer. Carson saw Jack come out of the house, still holding a gun.

“I heard you calling out for your daughter, Jack,” Carson said as Jack approached him. “Is she alright?” Carson asked.

Without warning, Jack raised his gun and fired the weapon at agent Carson, hitting the man in the leg. Carson fell in pain.

Well, I guess you needed a seriously bad villain because you created one in Devron. He hasn't got a shred of redeemable qualites. He so completely needs to die. And painfully.

I'm sure I'm going to get my wish ... eventually.

Concur with CeJay's assessment. Plus I like the flashback sequence. And the build up to the big reveal. Ohhhhh

Thanks....the part where jack shot the fbi agent, so as to leave him behind and not get him killed/or force him to stop jack with what is to come....was so Jack!!

Next episode will be the showdown between Jack and Devron,as it happened 300 years in Star Trek's past....Someone shot both of them in the head with a gun....We will find out who that someone was next time! ooooohh ahhhh...cant wait..

She subsequently suffered what appeared to be an embolism, and died. It would was later revealed (only to the readers of the story) that unknown agents had arranged her death to keep the information she had found secret.

We now continue…with events that happened in the early 21st century

The black colored SUV came to a stop near and old train depot in Odessa Texas. Several rows of abandoned rail cars cluttered the rusted out lines of track. It was late in the day, and the long shadows that were being casted by the long abandoned towers gave the train yard a cryptic feel.

Jack Bauer opened the door of the SUV and stepped out, his boots making a cracking noise upon the loose gravel that the train depot was built upon. The wind howled as his crisscrossed between the train relics and various warehouses, their purpose for being built long shrouded by the passage of time, and a down turn in the economy.

“I know you’re here!” Jack called out to Devron.

Jack’s voice echoed through-out the yard. He had tracked Thomas Devron from Washington DC, all the way down on a trail that had left at least fifteen people dead, including the family of Jack Bauer’s daughter Kim, and even Kim herself.

“I’m going to find you,” Jack called out again. “Either I die, or you die, or we both die,” Jack said as he drew his weapon and walked toward the first row of rail cars.

--

Devron’s body was motionless, and on the ground. He had come to the train yard hoping to rendezvous with a get away car. The car was there waiting for him, just as promised. But the driver was dead, and the car had been rendered inoperable. Devron, while looking for who ever was responsible, was himself shot in the back of the head, and his body, nearly lifeless as it was, had been dragged by his assailant into the warehouse. And now, the loud voice of Jack Bauer rang through the warehouse. The assailant, dressed in an all black jumpsuit, with a full face black mask, upon hearing Jack’s voice, reloaded with the same kind of special bullet used on Devron.

--

Using all of his abilities, Jack was well aware that someone else was in the yard with him. Be it the sound of a rock crackling, or the unmistakable sound of objects being moved beyond the deft touched of the wind, were all signs that someone was tracking him as well. Jack knew that Devron, who was trained with-in the CIA’s black-ops division, TARF-12, was just as skilled as Jack was. Devron was further trained as one of Stark Industries top-flight security officers.

But none of that concerned Jack. It came down to a simple man-to-man confrontation. Jack was fueled on by the death of his daughter, and her family. Devron was pushed on by his unending desire to kill. And on this day, at this train yard, it was no longer a battle of wills between good and evil; it was just man against man.

And then, at last, Jack got a break. High upon one of the towers was window, and had been angled through the passage of time, and now reflected what was on the other side of a train car Jack was nearing. Someone was there! It could have been Devron, but Jack could tell the person was in some kind of stealth black-jumpsuit. No matter; Jack now had the upper hand. He made his way to the train car, steppe on to to as silently as a deer, and made his was via the step ways towards the other side of the train. He soon rounded the back of the train car, and was soon near the other side of it. He then looked up at the mirror and became instantly worried; the person in the reflection of the window was gone. And then, with out warning, Jack knew he had lost the battle. He knew that someone was standing behind him, aiming a gun to his head.

Before Jack Bauer could move, the fun was fired, and a bullet dove into the back of Jack’s head. Jack’s body collapsed.

--

Half an hour later, both the bodies, that of Jack Bauer and Thomas Devron, were loaded into the back of a special truck, which would take them to a remote area along the northern flank of the Rocky Mountains. The person who had shot both Jack Bauer and Thomas Devron had accomplished the mission, and watched as the truck made its way past the abandoned SUV, and on its way to Colorado.

Though, to be sure, it was only the first part of a grander mission. The person slowly took off the mask, and looked at their reflection in the dirty water of an old cooling pool near one of the tracks. The person was...click here then scroll down...

Oh.

Didn't see that coming. At all.

I should've known though. Jack Bauer always gets betrayed by the ones you least suspect. Well done.

Like I said over Ad Astra Rob, what a twisty twist.

Thanks miranda...and now one has to wonder where Picard fits into all of this since HE was the one picked STAN to guide Jack Bauer...things will get twisty as we go on...and an act of distruction is going to wake up Jack Bauer pretty quickly to the fact that something else is going than just his tracking down Thomas Devron...

Typical 24 twists! Gotta love them..

Jack Bauer, believed to be mortally wounded by a gunshot to the back of the head, was put inside of a stasis canister in the early twenty-first century. So was the body of a ruthless killer, Thomas Devron, who had brutally killed Jack’s daughter, and her child. Devron had been part of a cabal to replace all the world’s rulers with clones. Killing Bauer’s daughter was an act of attrition.

Three hundred years in the future, the canisters that contained Bauer and Devron, which had been lost through time, were found. Upon having the gunshot wound to his head repaired by Doctor Julian Bashir, Devron attacked Bashir, killed him, and then escaped the Starfleet medical center he had been brought to at a twenty-fourth century Siberian Starfleet base. Thomas Devron would soon continue his murdering ways, and was working for a new suitor, for some, as of yet revealed reason.

Upon finding historic data about Jack Bauer, Admiral Picard ordered that Jack Bauer be brought back from the “dead” as well. Captain Beverly Crusher-Picard, now the wife of Admiral Picard, operated on and was able to remove the bullet from back of Jack's head. Bauer has now been enlisted to track down the escaped murderer of Bashir; Thomas Devron. To that end, Admiral Picard has assigned a Starfleet officer to act as Bauer’s guide in the twenty-fourth century. The officer is named Lieutenant Mnu Subrelqui, or as he demands to be called, Stan.

Meanwhile, Doctor Selar, stationed in Siberia, while viewing data obtained during both Bauer’s brain operation and Devron’s same operation, came to the correct conclusion that both men had been killed by the same weapon and by the same killer back in the 21st century. She subsequently suffered what appeared to be an embolism, and died. It would was later revealed (only to the readers of the story) that unknown agents had arranged her death to keep the information she had found secret.

Jack Bauer is now teamed with an aquatic alien named “STAN”, not knowing that it was Stan, who had traveled back into Jack’s time, and had shot both Jack and Devron in the back of the head with special bullets that faked their deaths, and kept them alive for a much more sinister reason…

We now continue

Starbase 142 did not orbit a planet. It was one of the rare Starbases that was positioned in the blackness of space. It was busy though. It was right dab in between Earth and Vulcan, thus getting much traffic from those two worlds, but also the rest of the Federation as well.

There had never been a murder on Starbase 142. The commanding officer, Captain Wilford Jennings, had taken command of the base hoping for a peaceful tour of duty. He got his wish for nearly five years. And then it happened; murder. A Cardassian woman and her daughter were not only beaten to death, they were sexually violated as well. The news had gotten out to the rest of the Federation, and now Captain Jennings was upset to have his name attached to such a brutal crime. But who had done it and why?

--

Jack Bauer, along with Mnu "Stan" Subrelqui, stood before Captain Jennings in his office. Starbase 142 was not as large as one of the mushroom shaped bases, but it did have a crew of over eight-hundred, and visitors in the five-thousand range.

“How could something like this happen?” Jennings asked. “How could someone do this?”

“It happened,” Stan said, “and we are trying to find this huuuman before he kills again. We need to see the bodies.”

“Why?” Jennings asked, speaking as if he had been defeated by the Borg. “What will that do?”

Jack, who had remained silent, finally spoke.

“Look,” Jack said to Jennings, “I know this man who killed these people on your station. I know how he thinks. He isn’t going to sit around and wait for us to move. He only escaped five days ago from Earth and he’s already killed six people. So, with all due respect commander, please let us do our jobs.”

Jenning nodded his head.

“Very well.”

--

Half an hour later;

The room was quiet and dark. The images of a dead Cardassian woman, and her dead five year old daughter, were displayed on a monitor. The chief medical officer of Starbase 142 showed his two visitors a recording of his inspection of the two dead bodies, before he had them shipped off to Cardassia. Then he focused in on both of their faces. Both the woman, and her child, and been beaten with an instrument that had left a scar on their cheeks, and foreheads. Scars in the shape of a snake. Definitely the work of Thomas Devron.

The lights came back up.

“I have never seen such violence, outside of a wartime environment,” Dr. Tilcha, who was an Andorian male, stated. The ridge of his blue skin wrinkled up on his nose with the look of disgust on his face. “Who ever did this act was disturbed in ways I can describe with out anger. To even hold an instrument in ones hands and do such a thing is beyond words.”

“The man who did this did not use an instrument, he used his fists,” Jack told Tilcha, “He does this because he finds pleasure in doing it. This future he has found himself in will be nothing more than a buffet for his sick desires. Now,” Jack added, “I would like to see where the crime took place. Has it been sealed to halt any contamination of the scene?”

“Yes,’ Tilcha said. “Captain Jennings had it sealed when we were told of your investigation.”

“Good,” Jack said.

“Huuuman, what do you hope to find there?” Stan asked Jack.

“I don’t know,” Jack told Stan. “I have the feeling, knowing Devron as I do, he left me a clue. That is part of his sick twisted mind as well.”

“The more I learn of your time,” Stan told Jack, “the more I hate it and you. Were you a monster like this Devron we find our selves chasing? Are we just chasing your shadow?”

Jack held Stan’s stare for a moment, and not answering, walked away.

“That’s what I thought,” Stan said to Jack’s back.

Stan also saw the small scar on the back of Jack’s head. Stan nodded upon seeing it. When he had shot both Jack and Devron with the bullets back in the twenty-first century, he half expected it would have killed them; but they had both survived. Jack Bauer was intent on finding Devron, which is what Stan was sure to let him do.

--

Moments later Jack and Stan met up at the crime scene, one of the rooms in the habitat wing of the station, had been sealed. The blood of the Cardassian victims still stained the bed upon which Devron had violated and then killed them.

“I contacted Picard on our progress,” Stan told Jack; though it was a lie. Stan had actually seen to other affairs.

“There was no evidence,” Dr. Tilcha said to Jack as Jack and Stan entered the room. “The security team went over every inch.”

Jack surveyed the room. He had never met a Cardassian. But it didn’t matter to jack. These were innocent beings, the woman and her child, who were the victims of a very violent man. From the trail of bodies that Jack followed from DC to Odessa, and now across the vastness of space, it made no difference. The man had to be stopped, and Jack would do anything to accomplish that task.

Suddenly the Starbase was rocked by an explosion.

“What the hell was that?” Jack asked Stan.

“The hull has been compromised,” Stan said. “We have to get out of here.”

“No,” Jack said. “I have to look. I have to find the clue Devron left.”

The alert klaxon began to sound loudly through-out the station. Then the voice of Captain Jennings came over the ship wide audio system.

“This Captain Jennings, Commander of Starbase 142,” came from the speakers. “I am ordering the immediate evacuation of this station. Our main systems have been compromised by an explosion. We have five-hours to evacuate, so please to so with out panic. This is more than enough time to get everyone off of the station.”

The message was repeated.

“We have to go,” Stan said again to Jack.

Jack had his concentration zeroed in on one of the pillows on the bed. Though the bodies had been removed, it was clear that they both had pinpoint injuries to the back of their head. It explained the condensed ring of blood around each of the pillows. It was an interesting wound to repeat on the Cardassians, and twice. Jack sat on the bed and then reached out and touched the blood stains. The blood had been so dark it obscured a small slit made in one of the pillows, right where the wound had been.

Jack slid his fingers into the slit and found something inside the pillow. It was some kind of data chip.

“What is that?” Dr. Tilcha asked.

“I don’t know,” Jack said.

Stan, too, was perplexed. Why had Devron left this clue for Jack? It was not part of the protocols that Stan had been availed of. Stan had to get the data chip from Jack. Jack slid the item into his slacks, and secured the pocket. Taking one last look at the scene of the crime, and feeling sorry for the violence done upon the woman and her child, stood back up with new vigor to find Devron; and kill him that much more.

“Okay,” Jack said, “let’s go.”

Jack followed Stan out of the room and through the throng of people who were all making plans to evacuate the Starbase. The lights were already starting to flicker, and Jack could also sense that the environmental controls were failing as well. The five-hour escape time quoted by the captain was obviously a lie. There was far less time left. It was no doubt an attempt by Jennings to maintain calm. But it was clear to Jack that not everyone was going to live.

EARTH
Living quarters of Jean-Luc and Beverly Picard

Admiral Picard was in his bed, with Beverly beside him, when the alert-signal came in. He climbed out of his bed and went out into the main room, sat behind his desk, and watched the alert information that came across the screen of his computer.

Starbase 142 had been sabotaged by unknown forces and had exploded. Nearly three-thousand were unable to evacuate the Starbase in time and had perished. Quite confident that Beverly was still sleeping, Picard opened up a signal on the computer.
