I can't remember if they mentioned it was romulus, or merely some planet in some star system that belonged to the romulans.

Anyone remember?

But he wasn't trapped. He was transfered there thanks to the beagle incident.

Yup. He thought they finally showed up to transfer him back to a real post. His pride would probably prevent him from taking the matter up himself, so he just waited it out.

Never mind that Kirk and Spock weren't sent by Starfleet.
