Star Trek - Star Wars

So everyone here is aware about all the "Abrams is a SW fan and wants to turn my Trek into Star Wars Trek"

If you've seen the film, what do you think ?

My only experience with SW is the KOTOR games and the 6 movies.
And I can honestly say not once while watching the movie was I reminded of Star Wars really.

Maybe watching the movie more times will reveal some similarities visual or otherwise but overall this was ST and not anything else.

What say you ?

This movie was not anything like Star Wars. The effects were SO MUCH BETTER!

I honestly saw little parallels between Star Wars and the new Star Trek film. Except for the fact that it's, you know, an engaging and exciting ride and all. :D

Star Wars is exciting, but Star Trek is engaging. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen. There was no corny dialogue or hammy acting or scenes of sheer boredom.

I really didn't see it, either. To me, folks that are drawing so many parallels are thinking way too much about it.

In fact, this movie completely kicked the SW prequels' asses (all three of them)!

I think the number of different aliens was kind of Star Warish. I did like the Edosian on the USS Kelvin. The first one we see outside of TAS.

I disagree.

After getting used to the level of aliens on Farscape, I thought the amount of real alien-type beings was way to little for a Federation.

Looked like Abrams tried to show as many aliens as possible. Kirk fucked a Orien Girl that was in the academy, I don't even know what was helping deliver Jim Kirk but it had really funky eyes. The Edosian(which may have been Arex). I think there were others but they moved so fast I know I forgot some.

Why is it when there are lots of aliens seen in Star Trek, people always jump on it, saying it's too much like Star Wars?

A planet with ice: that's like Hoth! Lots of aliens: the cantina!

Trek has had aliens since 1966, and it's good to see more members of the Federation up on the screen.

Well, wherever you rank Star Trek XI among the Trek films, imo anybody who says that this movie is not far superiour to the three "new" Star Wars movies, is a complete idiot.

And it had a very trekkie feel imo.

Star Trek has always been about more of the human condition and characters. Star Wars is just a space opera that really would rather have action than a real story or acting.

Sith is the best of the 3 Star Wars movies and this movie is so much better than Sith it's not even funny.

Oh good someone's already sorta made this thread.

I loved the movie, I really really did, but at some points I felt like I was watching a Star Wars movie.

Is there some standard way I'm supposed to do spoiler warnings here? Skip point 1 if you haven't seen it yet, minor spoiler....

1. There was basically a Hoth scene, where our fearless hero is lost on a snowy planet and threatened by a big furry creature (ie Empire Strikes Back); and then another big scary creature is scared away by Old Man Mentor waving shit and making noise (Obi-Wan on Tatooine in New Hope)

2. There is an Ewok-y creature (Return of the Jedi) (yeah this is a minor point but I was still like, "what?")

3. Old Man Mentor talks about Kirk's destiny (Obi-Wan). This may just mean that I've watched Star Wars too many times so anytime anyone says anything about destiny I'm like "Palpatine shut up already."

I think there was more, but I'm sleepy and don't remember...

The Star Wars prequels sucked, but I think that they tied in with the originals much more neatly than Star Trek ties in with any previous Trek.

You can hide it with the spoiler tags (the symbol to the far right above the text field when you write a post), but at this point it doesn't matter in this forum imo as there are spoilers everywhere. ;)

Looks like this:
spoil spoil

gracias, Roger Wilco

I'll just leave it like that unless anyone objects strongly. I don't think it's particularly spoilery.
