This will be much easier than the Enterprise. :)

While I'm not keen on the new movie, your 3D artwork is proving to be top-notch.

I like how this base is strongly reminiscent of the Starfleet command base in FJ's '75 Tech Manual.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks. :)

Maybe it's just me, but is this starbase not completed? It looks like it has missing sections.

A homage to the station in TMP?

I'm on the wall about this starbase... Maybe the sphere has an independent gravity system. Maybe it rotates seperately from the docking ring platform? I think I would like this more, if the sphere and ring were not so seperate from each other (though they are probably connected somehow). And those odd straps that go around the sphere just seem silly...

That being said- get to work Mister! I want to see some progress on this by the time I get home from work tonight! ;)

I agree there's something about this station that feels incomplete. It's that sphere I think - the platform gives it a sense of horizontal orientation, but the sphere doesn't have a distinct top or bottom so it seems like it should rotate. It ends up feeling like the planet Saturn. (However, in that regard, it does have a distinctly retro sci-fi feel, so if that's what they were going for they nailed it. Overdid it, perhaps.) I'd prefer the core had a more distinct top and bottom - maybe an hourglass shape.

But anyway, good work as always on the modelling, Madman. :)

Thanks. :)

About the sphere... I think it's going to turn out that it's the sphere at the bottom of the big Mushroom Starbase. How cool would it be to see it's evolution over several movies? I also agree about the retro sci-fi feel... it almost looks like an atom, also. Fits right in with the 1950's vibe.

Here's a progress report for tonight... worked about 45 minutes after LOST.

Next progress report will be after the movie. :) Unless I have some time at work tomorrow in the afternoon.

A beautiful starbase. I love how it looked in the film. I think your getting it pretty correct.

Thanks. :)

Here's an update...

Got windows, and the docking area details.

I'm going to make a departure from the actual model, here... it looks like when the ships dock at those outer areas, they don't actually touch , and there are windows right there in from of the ships. I decided to take the windows out of that area, and I'm going to put some kind of hatches there. It looks like they didn't think that part out too deeply... of course, we only see the starbase once. :)

All right, It's got textures. :) These are not overly complicated, though.

I ditched the big panels on the outside of the Main Hull, in favor of just the textured details.

I'm going to rig up some lights to glow on the inside parts of this thing, then it will probably be done. :)

Here's a proof of concept shot... I wanted to see what my old Kelvin kitbashes looked like docked here.

So...

That's actually my Constellation, and Avenger models. They aren't so great, but they look good from a distance. :) I'm going to make up a good wallpaper of this tonight.

OK, the Starbase is done...

I tweaked the windows, to make them look more like what we actually see in the movie... basically I made one big ring, and put that pulsating looking texture on it. It looks like there are so many windows close together, you can't tell them apart.

It's been a busy weekend. I'm glad I was able to make it back to some modeling. :)

I did some cleanup, and now I'm ready to build a scene with it. :)
