Not Supporting the New Movie.

I've stated that I'm looking forward to this movie, but if it sucks I'll say it sucks (as opposed to the pure haters who intend to fulfill their own prophecies). If you think that's extreme, I'd have to wonder what your other screen name is on here.

I won't go see the movie.
I won't buy any product that has even the faintest hint of a tie-in to the movie.
I won't buy ANY Star Trek related merchandise in the immediate future lest it be construed to represent a movie-related/inspired "bump" in interest.
It's my money. I can spend it or not spend it in any damn way I please.
I won't spend a goddamn penny on "Fake Trek."

Now get off my lawn!!

Seriously though, having just seen it--your loss.

You, on the other hand, can do anything you please with your money.
Have fun!

Goes back to play ball with my son on the lawn.

OK!

Dude, he said he prevented his wife from buying cereal... for a movie. That's just disgusting.

It's just cereal, it's not like he backhanded a small child playing with that model of the Enterprise they have now. I am sure many people make an attempt to regulate their SOs buying practices for one reason or another. My SO only VERY begrudgingly allowed me to buy the Dawn of War game due to her intense dislike of Warhammer 40k. In retrospect this was a wise attitude on her part, as the game was total crap and nothing like WH40k.

I am a new member, but your paranoia will be duly noted.

I never stated you were extreme, perhaps you can highlight the text that you misread? I merely stated that some members in both the anti-Abrams trek and pro-Abrams trek were equally extreme, which is easy enough to substantiate by documenting extreme responses of the members.

I don't give credibility to people turning up their noses at this movie before they have seen it.

I'm making a judgement based on the information I have available. Like I said if it turns out they undo what they've done in the same movie then I'll give them my money and go watch it.

really even if it takes a friend taking you along as a present to you go and see the film.

things like the bridge look better on the screen then in stills and stuff
like the uniforms fit within the gaps between the cage and what we saw finnegan wear in shore leave to tos.

yes some things change but the basic essence of the characters is still there.
what starfleet is and what it stands for is still there.

but if you dont..
shrug the movie will be getting more money from me as i go back to see it with a different group of friends.
:)

The problem with this thinking is that Paramount really couldn't care less whether anybody likes this film or not. As I said before, 20 million people could go see it, 19,999,999 could walk out hating every second of it and Paramount will make another one just like it because it will have made money.

Not that I would expect that to happen, simply saying you liking the film means NOTHING to them.

Somebody else paying for his ticket still makes Paramount money.

The second part of that means far more to me than the first. The problem, though, is that what Abrams maintains is the essence of the characters and Trek isn't what I, personally believe is the essence of them.

First, Abrams contradicts himself with respect to the characters. He says that he never liked the characters in TOS because he couldn't relate to them. Now, I would assume he does. That can only be accomplished by changing them.

Sulu sticks out more than most. I think Roddenberry went to great lengths in picking Takei for Sulu so as not to have him fit into typical Asian stereotypes. Abrams, in this film, has turned Sulu into a Jet Li wanna be, complete with weapons and matrix flips. If Roddenberry had wanted Sulu to be that type of character, he could have cast Bruce Lee instead of Takei.

I also don't know how I feel about the characters of this film being portrayed as supermen. I look at this thing and see John McClain more than James Kirk.

And, finally, I don't subscribe to the "destiny" message that Abrams openly admits that this movie delivers. Trek stories have long frowned on that message. The whole idea behind a temporal prime directive was that time and the past was something that needed to be guarded because one little change and the whole thing would to go hell in a hand basket. The notion that we can change the entire history of Kirk leading up to TOS and have everything remain the same just seems to fly in the face of far too many Trek stories for me. And, we seem to lose the sense that Trek has less to do with the crew of the Enterprise and more to do with humanity as a whole along the way.

I don't like reboots and recasts. But, none of that bothers me as much as losing the main meaning of the franchise. I don't feel that Abrams understands it and, I won't pay for his mistakes no matter how good the film may or may not be.

I'll watch this film the way I watch New Voyages. If I decide after the fact that I'm wrong about the film I'll consider buying a ticket and endorsing the film with my money. If not, they'll never see a dime from me.

I asked twice for this thread to remain on topic and talk about Star Trek. Instead people still want to get into pissing matches and talk about off topic personal crap.
today my wife and I went shopping and she wanted a certain cereal. The cereal featured Fake Trek. I told her I wouldn't allow that garbage in my house. I wouldn't let her buy that cereal until she found another box that didn't feature the movie.

LOL! Worst...husband...ever!

You know, none of the money you pay to buy Apple Jacks goes to Paramount, no matter who's on the box. Kellogg's gets your money either way, whether you get the Trek box or the box of stale cereal from last year. All you did was have an argument with your wife over something not all that important. Soured the taste of those Apple Jacks, I'll bet. Come to think of it, it was probably Fruit Loops.

I can't fathom doing that to my wife, but there ya go. I guess we all have to feel strongly about something.

Turned out to be a really good movie anyway.
Warning for flaming.

Not about Star Trek. Warning for continuing off topic personal talk after being asked by a mod to stop.
Howeever you want to justify it..

There's probably more warnings that could be given out, but these three are sufficient.

And this thread is done.
