Promotional Strategy Different For This Trek Movie

Dayton3

Admiral
Has anyone noticed that there seems to be a different type of promotional strategy for this Star Trek movie than previous ones?

Ever since The Undiscovered Country, it seems that the promotions were more "niche" oriented. Specials airing at the same time as television Trek episodes. Specials promoting the movies with older stars.

But the new movie seems to be using a more broadbased strategy.

The Super Bowl ad for example. Advertising during more mainstream, conventional one hour dramas for another.

Is this because it is a summer blockbuster or a conscious decision to widen the potential fan base?

Generally I think they want to broaden the potential audience, as they have stated many times before.

Dayton, do you really think it's strange for them to want to bring as many people as possible into the theater??

Both...

Trek can be TREK if it changes to a degree to get new fans in (best of both worlds). If people don't like it then please follow the same door as Berman & Braga.

Paramount has done a wonderful job with there ads it nice to see after so many TV/Movies companies muck up there ads.

If I give you an honest answer, some here will claim that I am trolling by posting things just to rile up the majority who love the new movie.

So mind if I wait awhile on that?

I think its clear you have issues with the new movie but TREK is dead unless it starts a fresh and if people don't like it then stop being selfish and let new people have a Nu Trek. Some people have had 10, 20, 30 or 40 years with Star Trek and now are complaing TREK is not for them anymore...

All Good Things

BSG proved doing it Nu is needed sometime.

I hate nuBSG with an undying passion.

Okay, instead of nuBSG as an example, what about the Fugitive and the Addams Family(theatrical) movies? They were essentially critically acclaimed reboots.

I liked the television versions better.

Especially the original Fugitive. Not to say the movie wasn't good but it was radically different than the series.

Everyone takes Star Trek too seriously.

But then again, why the hell not. Star Trek is like sex. Even when its bad it can be fun.

Star Trek is like sex......man doesn't that mark be as a stereotypical Trekkie....

The sex is always over by the time the episode is.

I can't think of a rational reason for the producers to want fewer people to see the film. If you can, I'd like to hear it.

Fine.

I think one of the biggest mistakes made with Star Trek through over the last decade or so has been the attempt to BROADEN the base.

Both with series and movies.

I think that Star Trek would be better served by catering to their base.

Blockbuster movies don't get that way by getting 50 million people to see the movie.

They get that way by getting 15 million people to see the movie over and over again.

In short rather than "expanding" the base, Paramount would be better served by "stimulating" their base and getting die hard Trek fans to the movie multiple times.

That was the old way of doing things that died a death with Nemesis. The most successful films have been ones like The Voyage Home which had (and has) broad crossover appeal. If they had produced an XI that was like the other ones it would have probably killed the franchise off for a good while before it would have inevitably been rebooted.

If I can be completely honest with you: I believe that would utterly and completely destroy Star Trek. Especially since the new life that's been breathed back into the franchise.

Because I know what you mean with 'Star Trek's base following'; it's those fans who don't like the new direction the franchise is taking, and would rather see everything stay the same.

I'm not trying to generalize, but I would find it hard to believe if most of that following aren't people who saw TOS in it's heyday. Meaning: they have to be around 50 years old now. Also meaning: They won't go to the theater any longer in a decade or so.

Then where would Star Trek be? No box office returns, no more movies and no more series. Trek would then be officially dead.

'Cause, duh, Paramount still is and always will be a profit organization. They need to see money. That means they need to cater to those who go to the theater, regularly. And it ain't the original Trek fanbase, that's for sure. It's not even me (mid twenties); it's today's 16-yr olds who beg for money to go to the cinema. That's the fanbase they need to attract.
