Any news about The War Games DVD?

I know The Second Doctor serial The War Games was announced to come out sometime in 2009 to mark the 40th anniversary of its broadcasting, but I've heard little about the release. Does anyone know more details (release date, extras) or when such details will be announced? I've been dying to get hold of this serial because it is one of my absolute favorite stories of all Doctor Who.

DWM announced some of the extras back in January:

3 disc set with 2 hours of extras:
Commentaries on all ten episodes
'Shades Of Grey' - a feature about black and white film-making
'War Zones' - a feature examining the various wars featured in the story
'Now And Then'
'Stripped For Action'
'On Target' - the first of a series about Target Books, this one focusing on Malcolm Hulke's work.

Plus features on Dudley Simpson, make-up designer Sylvia James, as well as the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppets' take on the story, not to mention the obvious remastered and vidFIRE'd prints, commentary text, photo gallery etc, etc...

No news on when it's due out, or who's on the commentary though...

Wow, that sounds incredible. I want it even more now!

I hope that along with Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury, and Terrance Dicks (who I can only assume will be on it based on their past participations) that Philip Madoc will be part of the commentary track.

Interesting question on the commentaries; sometimes people who ought to be on aren't because the dates don't work out (so the DVD people go for the best mix of possibles - three out of five is a good score, as it were).
But with a 10 parter, I'd think they'd probably have the line-up change from one episode to another, so you might get everyone you're hoping for, but not all together (which makes it easier to get people in for some of it).

Yeah, you're probably right about that. I do hope we get as many people involved with the production as possible (who are still with us).

Thought I'd give this thread a bump since the full list of extras is now available:
'The War Games' is being released as a three-disc set, with five episodes of the serial on each of the first two discs and around three hours of extras on the third. These extras include:
Commentary, with contributions from actors Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury, Philip Madoc, Jane Sherwin and Graham Weston, co-writer Terrance Dicks and script editor Derrick Sherwin.
War Zone (dur. 36' 23") - cast and crew recall the making of Patrick Troughton's epic swansong. With actors Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury, Bernard Horsfall, Jane Sherwin and Graham Weston, director David Maloney, producer Derrick Sherwin, co-writer Terrance Dicks, designer Roger Cheveley, Doctor Who Magazine editor Tom Spilsbury , new series writers Paul Cornell, James Moran and Joseph Lidster. Narrated by Gerard Murphy.
Shades of Grey (dur. 21' 45") - just how did the technical and artistic constraints of monochrome television conspire to effect the unique look and feel of early productions? With actors Frazer Hines, Wendy Padbury and Jane Sherwin, script editors Terrance Dicks and Derrick Sherwin, director Timothy Combe, production designer Roger Cheveley, graphic designer Bernard Lodge and sound designer Brian Hodgson. Narrated by Gerard Murphy.
Now and Then (dur. 9' 35") - the ongoing series visits the locations of 'The War Games' forty years on…
The Doctor's Composer (dur. 17'32") - prolific composer Dudley Simpson looks back at his first five years of work on Doctor Who.
Sylvia James - In Conversation (dur. 8' 27") - make-up designer Sylvia James talks about her work on Patrick Troughton's Doctor Who stories.
Talking About Regeneration (dur. 24' 12") - the concept of regenerating a show's main character into an entirely new physical form proved to be both a lifesaver for the show and an increasingly important part of its mythos. This feature explores the ideas involved and takes a closer look at each of the Doctor's regenerations. With actors Peter Davison and Kate O'Mara, writers Rob Shearman, Joseph Lidster and Gareth Roberts.
Time Zones (dur. 15' 21") - historians discuss the reality behind the various time zones featured in 'The War Games'. With political historian Dr. Martin Farr, military historian Crispin Swayne, Newcastle University's Lindsay Allison-Jones and author Prof. Susan-Mary Grant.
Stripped for Action - The Second Doctor (dur. 13' 46") - the continuing series of features focussing on the Doctor's comic strip adventures looks at the Second Doctor. With former Doctor Who Magazine editors Alan Barnes and Gary Russell, comics historians Jeremy Bentham and John Ainsworth.
On Target - Malcolm Hulke (dur. 20' 00") - the first in a series of features on the Target range of TV story novelizations looks at the work of writer Malcolm Hulke. With authors Terrance Dicks, Gary Russell and David J Howe, artist Chris Achilleos.
Devious (dur. 12' 15") - for over a decade, a group of friends on England's south coast met on weekends to shoot an amateur Doctor Who film - 'Devious' - which takes place between the events of Patrick Troughton's swansong 'The War Games' and Jon Pertwee's introduction in 'Spearhead from Space', and features their own previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor. To segue back into 'Spearhead', the team decided to put up the money to employ Jon Pertwee for a day… in what was to become his last ever appearance as the Third Doctor. This feature also has a commentary from the production team.

Plus of course the usual Photo Gallery, Subtitle Production Notes, PDF material and Coming Soon trailer. If you look carefully on all three discs, you might find some interesting Easter Eggs hiding away, including a somewhat different take on 'The Trial of Doctor Who'. And so might I! And so might he!
The Region 2 release date for the set is 6 July. The US release schedule hasn't been confirmed, but is likely to be sometime in November.

Oh, now that's awesome. Might just be the second biggest release to date (after Trial of a Time Lord, of course).

Holy. Fuck. Muffins!

Thank you for posting this, Brendan!!!

I cannot wait for this release. I'm so happy that I got my wish for Hines, Padbury, Dicks and especially Madoc on the commentary! And all of those lovely special features. I'm guessing "War Zone" features old interviews from David Maloney before he passed away. It's a pity he didn't live long enough for this release because he was wonderful on the Genesis of the Daleks commentary track.

A lot of other cool features including one about the historical accuracy which I had hoped they would have. Plus lots of Doctor Who people popping up like Peter Davison, Kate O'Mara, Gary Russell, Paul Cornell, Gareth Roberts and so on.

On top of all of that, the inclusion of "Devious," which I've never heard of but I'm very interested to check it out.

Damnit. I don't want to wait until November! :scream: :censored: :(

Not necessarily - given how far in advance the DVDs are being worked on, it's very likely the Maloney interview was 'contemporary' when it was recorded :)

I'm psyched simply because Patrick Troughton has become my favorite Doctor but so far only 4 others of his stories have made it to DVD-- "Tomb of the Cybermen," "The Mind Robber," "The Invasion," & "The Seeds of Death." After "The War Games" come out, how many more complete Troughton stories even exist?

^There are two more complete Troughton stories remaining: "The Dominators" with five episodes and "The Krotons" with four. "The Ice Warriors" will also be released on its own DVD, presumably with some kind of reconstruction for the missing episodes 2 and 3 (out of six).

In addition to the already-mentioned existing serials:

Get the Lost In Time DVD set and watch The Moonbase - they've at least got the audio for episodes 1 and 3 on it, and it's not a bad story, either. If you can find a nice Power of the Daleks reconstruction, definitely watch that, too. And last but not least, if you can get a hold of an Evil of the Daleks reconstruction, that's another "must watch" serial. Fury of the Deep is another good one to find a reconstruction of, as well.

Plus, you can always watch any of The # Doctors and fast-forward until the Troughton parts! (Yes, that's how I feel like watching them, sometimes...)

He was interviewed about many of his stories, bits of which have been used on Deadly Assassin and perhaps Planet Of Evil as well. I think Deadly also sourced a slightly older interview session as well.

Devious is - on the basis of the bit of it run at a convention 10-odd years back - a nice curiousity, so good to have it on there. Slightly surprised that Bernard Horsfall isn't on the commentary for episode 10 (though he's in the documentary) - I'd thought that with three of his four stories coming out this year, he might have been 'double-banked' for the lot in one go...

Edit, re early recording of commentaries and interviews: the commentary for Keeper of Traken, including Anthony Ainley, was recorded several years before its release and his death; I believe that commentaries for some Pertwee stories and Mawdryn Undead were recorded while everyone was already there for another story (in the case of Mawdryn, that'd be Visitation).

Yes, a few of the companion actors & actresses live/work overseas so plans have to be made around them - Wendy, Maureen, Matthew, Mark & Katy.

True dat. True dat. I think we get just enough Troughton in "The Three Doctors" & "The Five Doctors." They could have used more of him in "The Two Doctors" though. Instead, we're stuck with Colin Baker, Peri, & Jamie for most of the story while Troughton is chained up in a basement.

And Peri's not even wearing a bikini in it, either :(

The part where Troughton is at the restaurant with that other flesh-eating alien is hilarious. Even if his dramatic side doesn't get too much time to shine his comedic side certainly does.
