Why Didn't People Like Jadzia Dax?

The first time I ever asked why people don't like Jadzia Dax/Terry Ferrell in a thread here, someone replied with almost the exact same answer about how she's a right-wing gun nut and a country music fan. It's definitely been mentioned here before. And thanks for posting that picture, kitsune. I enjoyed it. :)

I don't mind Dax, mainly because of the backstory she gets from being a trill. However, I must say I lost a lot of respect for her in "Meridian". For someone who's had a 200 year simbiant (sp?), she is swayed off her feet in a matter of days from this man from an alien planet, then proceeds to give up 60 years of her life based on his charm alone. I don't mind the notion of love being irrational, but Jadzia is just being idiotic in this abrupt commitment. The silly, convoluted and utterly unexplained ending served her some poetic justice, at least.

Meh, maybe I'm overreacting based on a single bad episode. After all, Sisko did worse with his love moment in Second Sight, especially in the acting department (so many predictable lines and excrutiatingly drawn out moments).

You know, it'd been a while since I'd done a watch through of DS9. And because of that I'd allowed the negative opinion of Dax/Farrell that's all over the 'Trek Net' to reshape my own opinion. But now, after having watched through the first three and a half seasons again over the past month or so, I honestly think Dax is one of my favorite characters. And I've seen Farrell put forth some of the better performances of the entire cast as I think back on certain episodes.

Again - nope. No episode named 'Meridian' in MY copy of DS9 Season 3. Nope. No such thing.

(And if there were, the writers agree that Meridian was a bad idea and regret it themselves.)

Wait, I'm a country Music fan. I guess people have the right to hate me now too. :(

Yes, as the person I've quoted and many other Dax fans on the forum have said, it's best you try to block that episode out of your memory when evaluating the character. It was truly the character's lowest point and an affront to her fans and everything she stands for. There is no worse portrayal of Dax to base one's judment of the character on than the one in that episode. :(

I can see Meridian is as notorious as Threshold here :P

Jadzia Dax was the best DS9 character in my opinion. She was a mixture of many traits that shouldn't have worked but did. Her humour was her strongest trait and really warmed me to the character.

Jadzia and humor? She didn't make me laugh once in any episode she's been in. In fact, the only semblance of humor in the show I can recall is in Quark-Odo interactions, though those are far too overdone to have much comedic value.

Well whether she made you laugh or not, you gotta admit humour was an integral part of her character. She was constantly telling wisecracks. I loved it most of the time, but I can see why it's the reason she irritates some people. It bothered me once in awhile too. I felt like yelling at her at one point in "Change of Heart". "You're practically dying, girl! Stop making jokes, already!"

Personally, I am never more snarky than when I am in pain - when I was seventeen, I dislocated my knee while my mother was out of the house. When she came home I yell at her to call an ambulance. Her response was a calm 'why? What's wrong?' 'Nothing, Mom, I'm just lying on the the ground, screaming in pain for the hell of it.' Some people use humor as a coping method with pain.

Garak's description of Jadzia in Afterimage as somebody who was vital and 'owned herself' summed her up beautifully, and made me really pine for Dax at the time.

As for Terry Farrell, while I think her performances were a little uneven now and then, she had a tough gig. The character of Dax didn't require the sort of scene chewing of the likes of Dukat or Garak nor the histrionics of Kira or Bashir, she had to be both stately and at ease with herself, an observer who still had a passion and appetite to try new things, and these sorts of contradictions probably made the role much tougher to sell than it might otherwise appear, and all in all I think Terry did pretty good job.

I feel the same here.

I did like the character but Terry Farrell couldn't often deliver her acting very well.
That's the only shame about Jadzi - the actress. :-/

True story; I was at a convention in early 2000s. I heard an interesting discussion between two fans about this very topic. And what I came away with? They simply hated the actress (and thus the character) because she was a Republican/gun shooting/red-state supporter. That was the reason. And, having been to my fare share of conventions over the past 30+ years, does not surprise me one bit that they would think that away about her.

Just keeping it real.

Rob

OOooh!!!! Is that TRUE?? Is she really a right-winger?

Man if that's so, I think I am truly in love!

Hot...and a right winger...who could ask for more?

I actually hope it's true...and not some fan rumor! Now that would truly be something...if true!

Steady, Quasar, old chum. She also likes fishing.

I remember reading about it in TV Guide, and how she was always amused that people were surprised that the 6' pretty brunette was a fisherman. (And apparently rather good at it too.)

And it's a shame people would send hate mail to an actor due to their personal lives. Personally, I'd rather not know about an actor. It's sufficient for me for them to do a good job. :)

Sounds like a fun date...

That reminds me of this cool photo of her:

I've never seen a fishing pole look so good! :techman:

Only if you think Achey Breaky Heart is a good song...

What's wrong with being a country music fan? People are so prejudice against the American south it's sickening. Even more so in Enterprise...

I tend to agree. The mainstream has this stereotype of what 'all Southerners must be like' (which in turn taints anything that Southerners do stereotypically like) and it simply isn't what all Southerners are like to start with. It's one thing if you don't like country music, if you're against gun rights, et al, but it's another to dislike another person - an actor that you've never met such as Farrell - based on that.

Well that goes without saying. ;)
