It seems as soon as someone comes to wide public attention, there's always someone who wants to get jollies out of speculating on their sexuality. How boring.
Sex is interesting. In the media (and we are part of it) it is about who "they" are having sex with. It is no big deal. When Neil Patrick Harris came out of the closet it was just a blip on the radar and life went on. Other celebs keep denying their sexuality and it becomes a big deal (I'm looking at you Cruise/Travolta)
Being a fan of the show, to me, it came off more as a goof throw-away line. It was meant for a quick laugh, nothing more.
Agreed...Anthony's back and forth with JJ was far more entertaining.
Well, Howard has gotten blunt replies that veer in both those directions, depending on who the guest is.
You seem like a lot of fun.
One of the wonderful things about the polarization that occurs with respect to senses of humor is that it very quickly helps me decide whose company I will enjoy, and whose company I most likely will not.
And, love him or hate him, Howard is an extremely intelligent man with his finger on the pulse of popular culture. You may not like his style, and that's fair. But don't confuse his often blunt and/or crass delivery with stupidity.
Me, too. He's so much better now. The only thing lacking is that, since fans have to pay to listen to him, there is less chance of an angry non-fan blowhard calling in to be torn apart.

Actually, I think Artie was trying to get a laugh. It's a comedy show. What a concept.
Agreed. The reaction (two posts) above says more about the sensitivity of the "listener" than it does about Artie.
Well, if what you said had actually been funny, I think Stern himself (and his fans) would have found it worthwhile, no matter how inappropriate it was.
The shock value of the question was supposed to get laughs (and it did). I seriously doubt that Howard expected to get a straight answer. (Pun intended.)

Agreed. The beauty of the Howard Stern interview is that you very quickly get a sense of who an actor/celebrity really is, depending on how they can or cannot handle his interview style. Pretty much every other interview show is pre-packaged, rehearsed fluff. I'm not saying that you have to buy into or enjoy Howard's style, but if you want to get a sense of what a person is all about, listen to them being interviewed by Howard Stern. It's not what they answer, but how they respond to the questions.

the funny thing is, one of my favorite Stern interviews in recent times was with Scott Bakula. considering Bakula is one of the best liked Hollywood celebrities around... I was interested to see what Stern would do with the guy. I wasn't disappointed. pretttty interesting stuff, it was.

Stern works (or does not work) on multiple levels.
1. I think most people who don't listen to him regularly and only hear out of context quotes here and there think he is an ignorant, racist, sexist ass. I was in this category myself until I gave him a chance and listened to him for about a week, and then it suddenly clicked. This knocked me into the next category:
2. After giving him a chance, I realized that, while superficially sounding like an ignorant, racist, sexist ass, he is actually a very intelligent comedian who is making fun of people who are ignorant, racist, sexist asses.
3. Then there are the people who listen to him regularly that never have the moment of insight that I had above, and actually enjoy thinking that he is an ignorant, racist, sexist ass (either because they are one themselves, or they just find it entertaining to think of him as such).
4. Then there are those that listen from a sociologic, psychological perspective, and just like to watch the human interactions that occur on the show.
5. Then there are those that understand all of the above, and just don't find it funny/entertaining.
6. Then there are those that are so caught up in their own personal agendas or crusades that their anger toward Howard blinds them to any real insight into who he is or what he is about.
And some are a combination of the above.
And I'm sure there are others that I have missed.
As for me, I think there is no subject so sacred that we cannot have a healthy irreverence about it and still take that subject very seriously at the same time.
The more seriously a person takes himself, the more insecure that person tends to be. (And the less time I usually want to spend around that person.)

Just what do you mean by that? Huh? Huh?
It means about a third of the posters in this forum won't get invitations to his Trek XI orgy.
Shatner's a frequent guest of Howard's. Always a good show.
I suspect that Shatner's frequent and spirited appearances on the Stern show inspired him to do "Shatner's Raw Nerve." And, much as I love Shatner, that show only highlights how good Stern is at what he does, and how difficult it is to successfully imitate him.
Now if only Shatner would come in on a George Takei-week ...
... but that's never gonna happen.
