Star Trek 2009 Soundtrack Review Thread (Possible Spoilers)

As of today, the entire soundtrack for the film is 'out there' and many people are now listening to the entire thing. People are also posting entire tracks on youtube (like the end credits etc..) for us to listen too, if you don't hear it by other means ;) . I figure I would start a thread so people can talk about the whole soundtrack. I will post my thoughts on it later (not done listening).

As I said in the other thread.
Well I just listened to the entire soundtrack.

It's freakin' SWEET.

Shades of some previous Trek films in places, and some definite John Williams influences in places.

As I have said, it has a bit of that jazzy swing to the brass and the strong use of clarinet that was evident in TOS.

I hear subtle nods to TMP, TWOK, and TUC in there as well. Not direct lifts of their scores but just lyrical nods here and there.

Overall I think this was a strong outing that may have been "held back" to not come off to "standard trek".

It's funny how you get so use to Goldsmith and Horner then you hear something different and you try to mentaly tie it to Star Trek. Of course, it does help when you see the film and hear how the tracks are used. :)

As I said in the existing topic here:

Having listened to the score several times now, I'd call it a disappointment and not real interesting.

I'll own up to not being very musically sophisticated - I can't be too specifically analytical. The music on the album, though, seems to me to be pretty repetitious with not a lot of strong motifs, a kind of indistinct blur of horns and percussion simply repeating the brief signature of the movie's theme in one variation after another.

The movie theme itself is derivative of other modern film scores - yeah, "The Dark Knight," even if it's a little "brighter."

The way in which the Courage theme and fanfare are used seem unimaginative to me (with one brief exception at the end of "Nero Death Experience") and rather obligatory - "well, we have to put it somewhere, make it a little lush and stick it in here."

Overall I was hoping for something more evocative from the guy who scored "The Incredibles," which is one of my favorite movie scores of recent years.

I some what agree with Dennis. I am hoping it will grow on me a bit more, or I will feel different after I see the film.

BTW, glad to see you are finally using your name here now Dennis, this forum is only one left that I use Fleetlord on, everywhere else im just Tom, maybe i will change it here someday . :) :)

He was Dennis before... back in the day on here.

Ah well, I have been here since 2003 so maybe it was before that or my memory is just totaly shot these days, maybe i will lean towards the later.
