New Flu Virus SPREADS!

Do what you would normally do to avoid getting the flu, avoid direct contact with people, wash your hands, live your life. When people are dropping like flies. THEN we can start screaming about it being 1918 all over again.
Here's what I usually do: I get a vaccine. But that's going to take months.
Luckily for me, I'm apparently past the age when I would be vulnerable. :p

You lucky...

We have 10 confirmed cases of what look like the same virus here in New Zealand! Students who returned from a school trip to Mexico yesterday have tested postive for influenza A are now waiting for further testing to confirm it is the swine flu that's affecting Mexicans.

I must admit that this time I'm a little worried - wasn't with all the other 'flu' alarms, but this one seems different.

The UK's HPA is watching too....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8018887.stm

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said it was working with the government to assess any threat posed to the public.

It described the outbreak as "unusual" and warranting "further investigation and vigilance" by other countries.

Northwick Park Hospital said a BA worker who arrived from Mexico City and fell ill does not have swine flu.
I think it was the fish he ate on the flight. I should know, I had the lasagna. ;)

I aient saying its time to go all Mad Max, im just saying it doesn't seem wise to just shake it off as a "it'll never happen" thing.

This is affecting Young adults, people like me who should have the highest immunity to such a virus. Thats the thing which sets it apart and worries me the most.

Yeah, that is what worries me too. Google 1918 and cytokine storm..

(Edited to say there's no reason for young adults to have high immunity - if it's a completely new virus, no-one will have immunity - but young adults should have the strongest possibility of getting through the flu without big problems.)

BREAKING NEWS! Some guys catch the flu. In other news, today something important happened but scaring people with pointless pandemic alerts is our top priority here at SENSATIONAL NEWS INC.

U.S. Declares Public Health Emergency in Wake of Swine Flu

WASHINGTON -- The United States has activated an emergency plan to combat swine flu as the Obama administration announced measures Sunday to contain the sometimes deadly virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified the strain of swine flu and is prepared to distribute a quarter of the U.S. stockpile of 50 million doses of anti-viral medications in places around the country where swine flu has been located or may be expected to spread, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a briefing at the White House.

A few have posted words to the effect of "time to reduce the population." How accurate is that statement? How often has the world population taken a major hit? Is there any kind of pattern of years?

Isn't the 25-45 yo age group the largest in the world? If they take a major hit, it'll echo through reduced births for a generation or two. But also less demand on resources in a faltering world economy. Or oppositely, greater tension in the world from fear, leading to violence locally and internationally.

Are people getting bored of the Credit Crunch then? They have to focus on something else now to scare the Eloi of our society?

oooh a swine virus! Oh christ! From those dirty Mexicans! Shit!
Maybe it will come and kill us all like the Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen!
A bit like Bird Flu did! And SARS! And the Millenium Bug! I still have nightmares of the dark days when our entire planet was wiped out by those.

Or, perhaps it's a load of bullshit bollocks?

The swine flu cases that were confirmed in the San Antonio area were students from my little brother's high school. I have several friends who still go there. They've closed all schools in the district for a week. So, this thing's hit really close to home for me. My brother, however, is taking the opportunity to make some hilarious jokes at other people's expense (things like "Let's all wear our school shirts, go to walmart, and pretend to hack up a lung!" and after noticing that this flu has characteristics of human, avian, and swine flu, he called it... "MANBIRDPIG INFLUENZA!")

(Also, no fair! I'm up here in Missouri, at college, and I still have to go to school!!! :()
