one FRICKING shelf

At the book end of things, I'd imagine the buying will be more pronounced after the film than before, as a result of it, the more buying the better the movie is?
The trick is if people are looking to buy, they'll be looking to buy things related to the new movie, especially all those new fans Paramount's hoping to create. There won't be anything for them, just the novelization. From what I can see, there's no junior novelizations or kids' books of any kind, visual guides, practically nothing in the way of tie-in material. I know Pocket's soured on the non-fiction Trek titles since they don't sell well (with some of the weak offering in that vein, little wonder), but they've abandoning this film completely.

My local Chapters beefed up the Trek section again, adding Ships of the Line, Star Charts and a few other books.

And here too... they've moved a bunch of them to the centre panel of the main display wall of the store, under a poster of "glowering" Kirk from the new movie. (My son's comment: "He looks kinda evil." )

Was able to pick up both Mere Anarchy and Treason, so presumably they will be showing up at other Chapters locations too.

Also saw many copies of the deluxe edition of the Star Trek SceneIt? game, which I'm guessing is the game Marie1 was referring to. Haven't seen that anywhere else up here.

Chapters seems to be going all-out promoting Star Trek for the new movie. I hope it pays off well for them, and for S&S, and the authors. The American bookstores don't seem to be doing anything similar, based on the the comments here.

Was at my local, three-story Chapters today, picking up Destiny 2 and 3 as I'm planning on hitting the trilogy soon, and the Trek section is the same size as ever: two and half shelves between the graphic novels and the Star Wars books. There was, however, a display wall of Wolverine stuff (and they still haven't taken down their Watchmen stuff, although at this point I suspect that's a way to try and get rid of stock than playing off the film's popularity).

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

It's a good thing they have that poster, or I would have missed the books, the shelf wasn't high, but the one here was deep...

And your son is adorable!

That sounds like it. I hadn't seen it before either...

I hope so too... I wonder why it's not happening as much in the US?
I'm very excited that they brought back most books from 2005 on... :D
I think I'm only missing a couple, but still.

I will be going to BARNES/NOBLE later today and will give my weekly update. Its right next to the 18 screen theatre. I did like the giant STAR TREK movie poster when I went to see the Hanna Montanna movie...yep...I saw that movie...why? I have a 13 year old daughter. Was it torture...yes.

We await your report...

:guffaw: You just made my day. :)

Actually..I took one for the team. Her payback to me? She has to go with my wife and I to see STAR TREK XI. And I am quite sure that her standing in line with a bunch of horny-dorky Star Trek dudes (okay, over generalization..but you know what I mean) will be payback...in spades...

:lol::lol::lol:
Even better!! As long as she doesn't dye her skin green after the film...
:O

I forgot about that til I saw the preview...

And are you sure that's an over generalization...? :p

B&N is just as barren as usual. On the plus side, though, I went to a couple used bookstores and found a boat-load of pristine trek books (some of which going for a minimum of $20+ each on amazon.com marketplace)! :bolian:

Books I've found in used bookstores during the last couple days (filling in the gaps of many of the series I'm planning to read):

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine:
The Left Hand of Destiny (part 2)
Unity
World of DS9 (parts 2 and 3)
Warpath

IKS Gorkon (number 3)
Vanguard 3
Vulcan's Soul (number 2)
Star Trek the lost era (the sundered)
Rhihansu The Empty Chair
SCE 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (Worf's First Adventure)

You found WoDS9 vol 2 and Warpath in a UBS???

*shock*

I can usually only find the old numbered ones... sometimes some *very* throughly read copies of Avatar, Millennium and Abyss... and that's pretty much it.

*jealous*

I found them in mint condition too... The New England Mobile Book Fair (Newton, MA) is now my new favorite used bookstore. :techman:

Star Trek Books no longer exist in my area. It's twenty three miles to the nearest book store. And it just has the books of the current month and what didn't sell the last month or two. I only have feet for transportaion.

So basically, I've just stop reading any Trek.

I stopped by a local Chapters today and found the same thing other Canadians here are reporting--a prominent display near the front of the store under the Kirk poster, alongside a similar display of Wolverine merchandise.

Star Trek non-fiction titles were very well-represented, with the Encyclopedia, Star Charts, Star Trek 101, Captain Kirk's Guide to Women, and plenty of copies of The Klingon Dictionary (always in bountiful supply around here, for some reason).

On the fiction side, the Countdown TPB, all three Destiny volumes, A Singular Destiny, and Over a Torrent Sea were all among the titles on display.

The Star Trek shelves in the main Science Fiction section have also been beefed up, especially in terms of how many copies of the more recent anthologies were on sale. The authors in Myriad Universes definitely have nothing to worry about in Winnipeg...

Nothing at Borders in Burlington VT yet. They still have their supply which totals one shelf. The books they do have are sadly divided in half between racks....and the two groups of Trek books aren't even on the same level. They finish off a row of Star Wars books at eye level. On the ground level they finish off a row of gaming novels. The have the 12 or so latest books.

Meanwhile there is a huge display of Twilight materials. I remember being in the same store earlier this year and seeing a pretty big Watchmen display.

Oh well.
