The advertising is starting to piss me off

Re: Harmonix Music Systems, Inc and Paramount Pictures promotion

The band that rocks the hardest will win a Star Trek Hometown screening for their band and closest friends. And wait—for those of you that may not be the hardest rockers, you still have a chance to win awesome Star Trek/Rock Band Prize Packs.
DLC giveaway begins April 7th.

Pretty ridiculous.
Also discussed here.

Not really ridiculous, though. It doesn't take much looking around to know that Rock Band is pretty popular at the moment, and represents another potential segment of the audience Paramount hopes to attract with this film. It all adds up, or at least that's what they'd like to see happen.

The partner promotions, worth an estimated $50 million, will include advertisements from the studio's partners with a prevailing Trek theme.
Other companies signing on ahead of the movie's May 7 release are Verizon Wireless and Nokia, which will have its logo apparent in the action film.

Wait a minute. Let me get this straight... they're going to do product placement... in a Trek movie?

I think I'm getting dizzy... :scream:

Not quite. According to another article:
Alert fans will see the Nokia logo in the movie itself, though there's no product placement -- it's the 23rd century, after all.
Product placement in a Trek movie wouldn't exactly be novel, though.

Tonight, I saw an ad (during Chuck, I think) with the tagline "This is not your father's Star Trek."

Too lazy to read through six pages right now, so sorry if I'm repeating anyone.

Wasn't Enterprise supposedly "Not your father's Star Trek" as well?

Maybe they're counting on no one remembering that. Since no one outside of this forum has even heard of Enterprise, I guess I can't blame them.

I hope they mean it this time.

You ever stop to think that the ads was what wasn't "aimed at me, was not made for me,"?

I mean, these ads are directed to all the anti-trek people out there. Think if it as advertising three card monty.

Exactly...

I'm pissed because they stole my line verbatim the bastards.

Hi, new to the forum, life long fan of Star Trek though.

I was pretty turned off by Star Trek when Voyager came out and I felt *that* series was a slap to the fans (in terms of recycling old plots and lazy writing), but after five years of no Trek on TV or anywhere else, I'm willing to give the new Trek movie a try, if only to reignite the franchise and get more Trek on the little screen!

My biggest fear is that they 'dumbed down' the newTrek movie to get more people into theaters. Hence, the 'not your father's Trek' ad is disconcerting---because I *liked* the old Trek (TNG, DS9). I don't mind an update for Trek, but I don't want it done at the expense of good storylines and compelling characters. I hope the good reviews thus far is a sign they have not done that.

The biggest problem I saw with Trek movies in general is that the worst ones were the dumb ones. I don't watch Star Trek for cheap thrills, explosions and violence (ok, maybe a bit of it), I was attracted to the series because of its writing, its take on humanity and the usage of alien worlds as a mirror into ourselves.

What is insulting to fans is to take the thought provoking aspects of Trek out and keep the shallow things and then slap the Star Trek label on it and call it a reboot/relaunch/whatever.

My other big fear is that the studios have decided to just start from scratch and forget the long held storylines that Trek had. They say they respect the canon, I don't mind if they retcon a few things but if they decide to make the Romulans cousins of the Klingons or something completely off the mark that it negates all previous Trek, then I would feel insulted. I want a new Trek movie that attracts new viewers, but not at the expense of giving up what Trek stood for. And I also don't want them to scrap the entire universe that is Trek for the new movie. I hope that the new movie can coexist with current Trek lore without too much fan waving.

As for the current treatment of the fanbase, I'm actually pretty fine with it. The surprise screening, the sneak peeks....the talk of respecting the material and canon----I think that's all for the fanbase. They are careful to not alienate us because we are the ones who will give the movie the biggest boost. We're the ones that will push for the next Trek project. But talk is cheap, and giving us surprise screening is a smart viral marketing movie, the real test will be the content of the movie. Here's hoping that the Trek franchise will once again live long and prosper! :techman:
