Sadly Ian Holm Officially States He is NOT Playing Bilbo Again

I loved Ian Holm as Bilbo but never in a million years did I expect an elderly man to be the star of the next two super huge Triple A blockbuster action movies.

Anyway, TORN has some suggestions for actors who could play Bilbo and, since it is now inevitable, my vote would go DEFINITELY to Martin Freeman from "The(real)Office". He has the exact whimsical little face that would suit a hobbit and the quizzical nature and innocence.

I think he would be GREAT.

Freeman would be great as a Hobbit sidekick, but Bilbo grows a lot throughout the Hobbit (as a person I mean) and so needs someone with a tad more weight and gravitas. He needs to portray to the viewer the strength and intelligence that Gandalf sees in the young Hobbit.

Basically, you need a second Elijah Wood - someone who can do playful and young as well as wise and serious. Big ask. Also tough ask for any actor to follow the great Ian Holm.

The guy's 78 years old, I have to imagine that alone would make it hard for him to want to go through with this even if they could somehow "make it work" onscreen. It'd be like having Shatner playing Captain Kirk.:p

The film makes it clear that Bilbo and Gandalf are "very old friends" so he is presumably just referring to the last time he saw him, which is probably long after the events of "The Hobbit". That would just indicate that Bilbo is aging unnaturally slowly, but that he looks the same as he always did.

Absolutely agree, and it seems obvious. Gandalf and Bilbo's time together continued on and off for many years after their adventures in The Hobbit. Then Gandalf left for a long period of time. This is what "You haven't aged a day" is referring to. I myself had no expectation that Holm would be playing Bilbo again.

Bilbo was supposed to look young for his age (130ish or something like that). But he wasn't supposed to look as young as he was when he found the ring. After all, if he was, they would have cast a much younger actor for the role originally.

Ideally, they need to find someone who can do a great job of playing Bilbo and has some resemblance to Ian Holm. But if I had to pick one or the other, I'd pick the former (I'd rather a good Bilbo than one who looked like the old Bilbo).

Look, I like Holm like the next geek, but I'm not ready to put him on that pedestal the "Shatner is Kirk" army has done. I trust the people behind this venture. I'm sure they'll find someone who play Bilbo as Bilbo and not someone impersonating Ian Holm. If they go that route, then I'll be happy.

So Chris Pine as Bilbo?

In addition to playing every under 30 leading role in the next four years. Sadly, he's too old to play himself in Under Thirty: The Chris Pine Story. Word is that casting is looking for a twelve year old who can play eight.

(although, even there, Lucas fucked up because how did Obi Wan age 45 years in about 20? And don't give me that "He's living on a desert planet" bullshit).

Actually, even in Lucas' original drafts in the early 70's, he describes Obi Wan as being aged beyond his years from being in the extreme climate.

No, in the four drafts the character that eventually becomes Ben is actually described as looking younger than his age.

Draft 1: GENERAL LUKE SKYWALKER: He is a large man, apparently in his early sixties, but actually much older. Everyone senses the aura of power that radiates from this great warrior. Here is a leader: a JEDI general. He looks weary, but is still a magnificent looking warrior. His face, cracked and weathered by exotic climates, is set off by a close silver beard, and dark, penetrating eyes.

Draft 2: THE STARKILLER: The Starkiller is a large man, but shriveled and bent by an incalculable number of years. His face, cracked and weathered by exotic climates, is set off by a long silver beard and penetrating gray-blue eyes.

Draft 3: BEN KENOBI: ...a shabby old desert rat of a man, who appears to be at least seventy years old. His ancient leathery face, cracked and weathered by exotic climates, is set off by dark, penetrating eyes, and a scraggly white beard.

Draft 4 (Shooting Script): BEN KENOBI: ...a shabby old desert rat of a man appears and leans over Luke. His ancient leathery face, cracked and weathered by exotic climates is set off by dark, penetrating eyes and a scraggly white beard.

Maybe "appears to be" in the Third Draft is indicating he looks older than he is, but it's not explicitly mentioned.

As for Holm, unfortunate, but inevitable given how they've dragged their feet in making this movie. Freeman is an interesting choice, I can see it working.

Hey, a fansite (possibly ours, even) got Zach Quinto cast as Spock so why not Pegg as Bilbo?

I think there were other factors for Quinto?

Naturally yes. But the idea got into his head in the first place because a friend e-mailed him a post (from somewhere, maybe here) of good ideas for Spock casting and he was at the top of most of them. So yeah, you may have Temis to thank for that little bit of Hollywood lore.

Well good for us Net Nerds! I think he is a natural Spock, cant wait for the new film, squee etc.... ;)

I guess I just wanted continuity between the films. This is not like the PT and the OT where there is a reason why Obi Wan is played by two different actors(although, even there, Lucas fucked up because how did Obi Wan age 45 years in about 20? And don't give me that "He's living on a desert planet" bullshit).

It was about 30+ years between episode 1 and episode 4. Guiness was about 62 when he first play Obi Wan. At the end of Episode 3 Obi Wan appears to be about his late 30's early 40's.(yes I know Ewan was about 32 when filming episode 3, but that besides the point hes playing an older character) Do you know how much a person ages in 20 years????? I can quarantee you that Ewans, Obi will not look 25 years younger than Guinesses. So the portrayals are about right give or take a couple of years. I have known people that have aged badly between 30-50 and look 60 and some that have aged great between 30-60 and look 50.

That is going to suck majorly.

Why?????? Because the actor is not the same??? The story comes first before the appearance of the actor. Ian Holm would have been to old even 5 years ago. Theres nothing wrong with another actor playing the same character. Its been done for decades. Even within the same film. Imagine that. At least this change is 10 years after the initial portrayal. Ian Holm is just to old. Bilbo is supposed to be in his 50's not 70's.  Even when they had Ian portray Bilbo as younger in LOTR they had to de-age him when he found the ring. The character was visibly older when gandalf came to the shire years later. Yes he was young looking for 111 but he had still aged. The ring did not keep him looking 50ish. Its just wouldnt work. The would have to CGI every scene Holm's is in. Its just not worth it.
