John Madden Retires

Well, at least we no longer need to hear him suck up to Payton Manning.

On a serious note, good career but it was time to retire. I wish him well in retirement.

I watched him coach and then he was awesome in the 80s, especially with the telestrator once it came along. But his time has passed and I'm glad to see he's going to be taking some well-earned time off. I hope he enjoys his retirement.

When I saw this on SportsCenter, I was shocked, but understood. I always paid more attention when he was in the booth, and his presence was always felt. CBS, FOX, ABC, and NBC all benefited from his contributions, which is hard to do for any broadcaster. There will never be another like him, and with all due respect to most other booth analysts, they seem boring and unengaging compared to him.

Not to mention being the face of the best football video game ever created, bar none.

Countless Super Bowls, Monday Night Football, and Sunday Night Football - he will be missed, but I wish him well in retirement.

Or Brett Favre.

I think thats why Madden left. No one worthy to suck up to anymore!

Saw an interview with Al Michaels last year and he said he'd retire when John did. Wonder if that will happen?

Anyways, good luck to John Madden on his retirement! :techman:

We'll always have the video games to remember him by. ;)

I always thought I'd celebrate the day he retired, but I'm actually going to miss his insane rambling about things completely unrelated to the game, like how much he likes to eat.

As to who will replace him, maybe NBC will give Jay Leno a few more hours each week to dominate our TV screens.

Thanksgiving was never the same after Madden stopped awarding the six-legged turkey. Cris Collinsworth may be replacing Madden in the SNF booth, but Madden will never be topped for his genuine enthusiasm for the game and his love of the video pointer.

There's no doubt in my mind that Harry Kalas' passing this week affected this decision, as both Kalas and Madden were / are 73.

It's already been announced as Cris "I loooove the sound of my own voice" Collinsworth.

I'm sorry, you must be confusing that with ESPN NFL 2K5.

I'll really miss Madden. No one will be able to fill his shoes, ever.

I can't stand Chris Collinsworth also... so this is doubly bad news for me.
