When did CBS get rights to Trek?

So in reading up on some of the recent drama about Hulu, I noticed that it's been cited many times that Star Trek is now owned by CBS.

I cant find any references that depict the hand changing that occured with Star Trek.

Can anyone give me a run down of how Star Trek left the Hands of Paramount / UPN and how it wound up with CBS? I figured the logical place it would have landed was WB/CW.

IIRC, it was around 2006--about a year after ENT ended--that CBS and Viacom went their separate ways, with CBS getting Paramount's TV divisions (the Trek TV shows) and Viacom getting Paramount Pictures (the Trek movies).

While both are still ultimately owned by the same parent company--or simply, Mr. Sumner Redstone, IMO--they are run as separate companies that apparently have no love for one another. The seeming dischord between CBS and Viacom might have been a factor in the split.

Read the wikipedia articles on CBS and Paramount and their relationship. There is no way anything that complex can be articulated in a TBBS post.

As I understand it, CBS as one of the owners of UPN, always had some say in the production of Star Trek. Their boss certainly did in the decision to cancel Enterprise. Months later, Paramount's television production arm merged into CBS.

Here's the short version.
