Damn I hate post-con depression!

Ugh. I ate the day after a convention. I just spent a wonderful couple of days at huge anime convention here in Seattle. Had a great time seeing the costumes and hanging out with friends. So now here I am back to my real life. Cleaning the house, dealing with the mundane crowd on the bus and at the groceries. And I have to go to work this evening. So here I lie on my bed in a huge grey funk, missing all the fun and the people who like the same things I do. I know I'll be fine in a couple of days, but for now, my life just sucks.

Does anyone else get this way?

I remember in my absolutely miserable year of Junior high school I went to a great con and I was so sad when I got home and realized that it was over. However, it stayed as a good memory and I'm really glad I went to it. It's still my favorite con. :techman:

I've never heard Norwescon described as an anime convention before. :p

(I'm just kidding, but I find it odd that there was an anime con in Seattle the same weekend as the annual northwestern regional literary con. Norwescon was at the SeaTac Doubletree. And no, I wasn't there, but I have friends who were.)

I get post-con depression too, as do most of my friends. It's usually worst after Polaris, but a large part of that is due to the letdown after spending most of the previous year working on it. Once it's over, and we all crash, we all *crash*.

I imagine that I'll probably feel a bit of a letdown after Anime North as well. It'll be my first time attending an anime-only con where I'm not sitting behind a table the whole time. But the letdown will mainly be due to the fact that my boyfriend is going home to Atlanta five days later (he's visiting for nine days).

Post con depression is awful. I don't get it as badly as I used to. In fact, I went through a phase at one point a few years back of not wanting to go to cons any more because I couldn't cope the the PCDs. The only antidote is to register for another con and immerse yourself in fannish things - watching dvds and so forth.

I've never been to a con either..but would LOVE to go to one someday! I've heard they are awesome. The nerd in me would go to see a Trek convention, preferrably with a Voy actor. :D:D

With the exception of the year that WorldCon was in Boston, I haven't been to a con since the early 80s. I used to go fairly frequently back in the 70s when I was a teenager. I love them, though. That's how life should be: Colorful and imaginative and full of books.

What is it that you do at a con exactly?

I think this varies from attendee to attendee. Speaking for myself it's pretty much this: I spend a great deal of time sitting around chatting with friends I haven't seen for ages, talking about tv and film we've seen, catching up with life, having a laugh. I wander around the dealers' room looking at all the stuff to buy, sometimes buying this or that. For a long time I was never interested in the guest talks, but I've got into them of late, so I while away an afternoon listening to the actors talking about their lives and careers and answering questions from the audience. The evening depends upon what kind of con it is. Fan-run events often have evening entertainment such as a disco. I dance the night away to two or three in the morning. Then do it all again.

Other folks might spend their time collecting autographs and spend a great deal of time queuing for autographs.

Other folks get their kicks out of helping to run conventions.

Generally speaking it's all about spending time with like-minded folk in a safe environment. Someone around here has a sig that says a riot never broke out at a Trek convention, and they're right. Generally speaking everyone is far too mellow to be rioting.

With the exception of the year that WorldCon was in Boston, I haven't been to a con since the early 80s.

Which time? Noreascon 3 was in 1989 (my first Worldcon), and Noreascon 4 was in 2004 (I was at that one too).
It was in 2004. Too bad I didn't know you were there. I did wear my RJDiogenes shirt so that anybody from the Internet could recognize me, but I actually only got to go for half a day; my mother's birthday was the same weekend.

All you people complaining about post-con depression should pity me who suffers from non-con depression. We don't get scifi conventions in Tasmania at all.

Which conventions do you usually go to, WillsBabe? They sound fabulous.

These days I'm much more relaxed in my convention-attending and so I only attend one a year. I've been going to SF Ball for 5 years or so now (although I've been attending cons continuously since 1983! :)) SF Ball is a great event. It's held every February in Bournemouth. They have a fabulous fancy-dress/black tie banquet on the Saturday evening, attended by the guests, followed by live entertainment and dancing til 2. If you want more info, I'll happily tell you all about them. Just pm me! Here's a link to their site: http://www.sfball.com/sfball/index.php

^ Looks like a just missed one! I wish they had a summer ball. I've heard Bournemouth is a gorgeous place. :D

I just got back from anime detour good fun all around. The bad thing is that this year it was set up in a different hotel. I didn't like the setup much since it was on multiple levels and all the gaming stuff was on the 22nd floor so you either had to walk up and down 22 flights of stairs or wait for the overcrowded elevators!
