Laser Beams

I want to build my own laser but from reading online material I can't fathom how it's actually accomplished, I have a general idea of how it works but nothing concrete if you know what I mean, certainly not enough understanding to build one.
Can anyone give me a simple step by step guide type of thing as to how to make one and what i'd need?

Look in the back of a PopSi. they used to be sold in there. You can buy kits online. If you can solder you can do it. It may look like ass but it'll work.

I was thinking about getting a big tube that was completely mirrored on the inside and then sticking a really strong lightbulb in one end and on the other end (which would be closed off and mirrored) i'd make a little hole for the light beam to come out of.

Would that work?

Not just no, but f--k no.
 
I really don't know much about lasers (other than what I just read on wikipedia), but there are some crucial elements missing. First off, if you've been looking at the info online, it would probably help to take a look again. Here's a brief explanation from Wikipedia.

So, if I follow this correctly, to break it down into basic elements, you'd first need a highly reflective cavity, although apparently a mirror on each end is sufficient, you don't need a completely sealed chamber. At least, that's what I got from the reading. You'd also need a gain medium in the center, which is apparently something that, when energized, amplifies the light of a specific wavelength. Crystals can be used for this but they also mention gases, and from what little I've heard, I think those are more common. The light source is external and apparently just requires a fairly intense source, since they specify a flash lamp in the description. I'd think a flashlight or regular bulb would be too dim. One of the mirrors apparently has to be semi-transparent for the laser to come out one end. There's a picture next to the section that I linked to that describes the basics pretty well.

All this being said, it seems that the entire process is extremely precise, it's definitely nothing like just bouncing a light around inside a chamber with a bunch of mirrors. I would imagine you'd have to calibrate the medium exactly for the wavelength you want. It's really not the type of thing that I think somebody could just throw together without a lot of technical study.
 
Off the top of my head, get a straight neon light tube, hold it vertically and take off the bottom (neon is light weight) and replace it with a mirror with a pin hole. Reverse it, do the same on the bottom. Fix a flash bulb at one end, flash it, shoot the laser out the other end.

Now look it up and tell me if my head is wrong.
 
Apparently the gain medium has to be energized, though, for it to work. You'd have to run a current through the light tube, as well.

Which brings me to my next point: please don't do anything dangerous or fatal in the process. I'd hate to hear about somebody getting severely burnt or something while trying to make a laser based on instructions from Trek BBS.
 
What, Tesla coils aren't powerful enough for you?

Seriously, take care going down the DIY route -- you'll likely be dealing with electricity in the first instance, and eventually light radiation that can blind. Also don't point the beam at passing aircraft, or you'll soon find yourself prostrate on the floor with a policeman's knee in your back, before being hauled off under the counter-terrorism legislation.

No, I don't think so. The beam is already collimated, and stepping up the voltage would probably burn out the electronics. I suppose one could combine a few of them, and focus them onto the same spot, Death Star fashion.

Seems like a waste of a perfectly good DVD burner, laser pointer and maglight to me. Not to mention probably being dangerous to attempt without taking the proper precautions.

Actually that raises an interesting question.
Could Neodymium magnets be used to increase the power of a laser beam? :vulcan:
 
The most power hand held laser you can buy at about $900 can only just spark up a match or burst a balloon at close range.

I never meant be careful with the laser itself, I meant don't go hacking up a fluorescent light tube and getting hurt if something flares up in the process.
