Dr. Selar

JustKate:

You called it. A big "swing and a miss" there. The only thing Troi picked up on was Ira's "warm feelings" for Kareen, nothing else.

Then again, in Universe, maybe his great pain and suffering was blocking her ability to get an acurate read on him.

Praetor:

Unfortunately, that was more common than not in seasons 1 & 2. :D

"Warm" feelings? "Warm"? For the woman he wanted to be with forever? Jeez.

Well, I for one feel ever so slightly validated. But only ever so slightly. ;)

Now that I do remember. Oh and also (said in a trembly, semi-tearful voice to Riker, also in Farpoint), "But if you should be hurt!"

Mind you, I wish I didn't.

It's not that I disliked the character, but they gave her such goofball lines, particularly in the early episodes. How she managed to keep a straight face I'll never know.

Maybe she really is a better actress than people give her credit for.

*rim shot*

It's too bad they didn't replace both Pulaski and Crusher with Dr. Selar. The bedside manner of a Vulcan must be quite off-putting! And Worf and Selar as mates? That's pretty much out there, but what potential for conflict! Even more so than the Tom Paris/B'Elanna Torres romance! -- RR
For what it's worth, the character does live on in Peter David's New Frontier book series.

I once had a theory that Troi is actually a complete charlatan. Whenever they need her to tell them if someone is lying or whatever, she can't read them. The rest of the emotions she "senses" are vague and obvious:

Irate Klingon - "I sense great anger"
Crying child - "I sense great sorrow"
Married couple - "I sense great warmth"

Clearly she lied on her application form to get into Starfleet, because they thought a mind reader would be useful - why else would she be on the bridge all the time?

I can think of instances when her empathy was useful, but jeez, it does seem as though usually it was wasted on scenes similar to your examples, Tomalak - which I realize are supposed to be jokey but which, sadly, could easily have come right out of a script.

Which is pretty weird, actually. Why make her an empath if you're not going to make use of her empathy?

I do wish - to drag myself back OT - that we'd seen more of Selar. But a Klingon/Vulcan romance? I don't know.

I have a real problem with any Vulcan romance unless it can be done like Sarek's. That was one of my issues with T'Pol on Enterprise. But so not to open another can of worms, in all fairness perhaps Vulcan females have a completely different approach to romance.

When it comes to Selar though, yeah, I would have been all for more Susie. (Edit: Oops. Forgot to proof.)

I realize that since this is about fictional representatives of fictional species known as the Vulcans and the Klingons, both serving on a fictional starship as officers in a fictional quasimilitary organization in a fictional future...it's going to sound ridiculous. But I don't care. A romance between a Vulcan and a Klingon just wouldn't be realistic.

There. I said it.

I guess they could write around it - trap them on a planet together while Selar goes through pon farr (although I must say, pon farr didn't seem to phase T'Pring one little bit, unlike poor Spock) or something. But I think it would just be - and I concede all that fictional fictional fictional stuff, OK? - just too fake. Too manufactured. And not very respectful of the characters, IMO.

But more Susie, in any of her roles, would have been great. And a Vulcan regular would have been great, too.

Maybe, alternatively, Worf could have become fixated on Selar, and in relentless pursuit of her, but she is in turn not interested?

I'm glad they didn't. The only Worf romances that really worked for me were with K'Ehleyr and Jadzia. That entire Troi thing just never felt right. Besides, they already had Geordi as the ultimate strike out king when it came to the ladies. Then there was Reg Barclay and his issues. I don't think TNG could have handle another one. Nice thought though.

I can recall one time when Troi's Betazed senses told us something that wasn't so obvious. In Chain of Command, Pt. II, Jellico makes the Cardassians sweat and he explains his strategy to Riker and Troi. Riker says something like, "Well he's sure of himself." And Troi says, "No, he's not." It was a good insight into a character that seemed brimming with self-assurance.

Back on-topic, I've had a chance to think about Worf and Selar. I now kind of like the possibility of a romance between such opposites. After all, they hinted of a romance -- or at least, a deep friendship -- between Worf and Pulaski. So why not a Klingon and a Vulcan? A child of such a union would have more issues than Time magazine!

Also, back off-topic, has it ever been established that Vulcans are incapable of having sex except during pon farr? Perhaps a Vulcan married to a Klingon could have sex, as it's "logical" to engage in physical contact with one's mate to bring harmony to the marriage even when not in the mating season.

As for poor Geordi, imagine him being fixated on a Vulcan like Selar! Talk about striking out!

I agree. It wouldn't have been any more ridiculous than Worf/Troi though. The only thing sillier would have been Wesley/Guinan.

Oh, but that would be too sad. (I can't help it - I'm a girl.) There Worf is, an outsider already, and he can't even get the girl of his choice? And if they made it funny, that would be even worse. Worf deserves his dignity.

I don't think it ever has been established, and what's more - here's that word again - it wouldn't be realistic. ;) Pon farr is when Vulcans are driven to mate, but who says they can't mate by choice at other times? But I don't think anybody's ever said.

If we knew that there were only a couple of years' difference in age between, for example, some of Tuvok's kids (I think he had five), we'd know fairly conclusively. I can't remember that ever being mentioned, but maybe it was.

But my guess is that this is one of those little mysteries that the writers were determined not to solve for us.

I agree. It wouldn't have been any more ridiculous than Worf/Troi though. The only thing sillier would have been Wesley/Guinan.

Well, I didn't mind Worf/Troi that much, but as for your last pairing...:lol::lol:

Oh, thanks - I needed a good laugh!
