PETA - at it again...

You're probably right about the artists just not being in fashion; I should Google some old bands from the 70s and 80s and see what they're up to. Come to think of it, I remember the Guess Who just performed in Boston a couple of Summers ago.

Heck, Klaatu released a new album recently! (I was a Guest Liaison at KlaatuKon a few years ago, a fan-run convention here in Toronto for their fans. We got 100 or so people - maybe it was as high as 200, I don't remember - and the band performed live. It was the first time in something like 25 years that they'd performed together.)

...a soundtrack to the silent film "Battleship Potemkin"...

:wtf:

Sergei Eisenstein said that he wanted a new soundtrack composed every 20 years to make the film relevant to each new generation of viewers.

Edited to add: most of it is not what you would expect. Only a few of the tracks have vocals. (I was a little surprised at the use of the Soviet national anthem with a dance beat, but it actually works. :) )

I find this sad on 2 fronts, firstly that people are so keen to assume that there can't be any truth to it that they are not prepared to give the perfectly reasonable idea that getting a pet from a shelter is a better thing to do that get one from a pet shop a fair shake, secondly that PETA have evidently blown their wad entirely with a few high profile nutcase campaigns and destroyed their public image and now when they have a light hearted take on a serious subject everyone just waaaahs about them.

Either way, most people haven't really considered this issue on it's own merits and are just railing against PETA for the hell of it.
Well said. It's a very good cause. It's a shame PETA didn't simply ask for their endorsement or for them to participate in ads, rather than ask something they must have known would never happen.

Klaatu... rings a bell (beyond "Klaatu berada niktu")... was that the band that was once implied to be the secret reunion of the Beatles? I thought they were just a studio band? Or am I thinking of something else?

AC/DC is still one of the biggest touring bands in the world, routinely selling out 50,000+ seat venues. They headlined the largest North American concert in history 6 years ago, half a million people in Toronto. Their latest album Black Ice hit No. 1 in Canada, France, Italy, Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Norway and Portugal.
Twice No. 1 in France! Awesome! ;)
Quite frankly, it shows a pretty big amount of ignorance in music to say "they're still around?" unless you live in some kind of cave, even in Holland.
Trivia: Angus Young lives in Holland...

That's them! Their big hit was "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft", but I think they may have had one or two other lesser hits.

My job as Guest Liaison for the convention was to make sure that Steve Smith, the journalist who started that Beatles reunion rumour, got to where he needed to be on time.

Interesting. They must have had another hit of some kind, because I don't remember them doing "Calling Occupants." I do remember The Carpenters doing a version in the early 80s, though.

That was a cover version. I think it was also covered by another group, but I don't remember. My friend who chaired the convention might remember, though, and if she doesn't, her husband (who until recently owned a record label) probably would.

I though this was a joke, but it's on a PETA blog and news outlets are reporting it.

You know that market in Seattle that's famous for throwing fish?

Well here's the PETA blog and here's the gist of it:

The AVMA plans to team up veterinarians and employees of Pike Place Fish Market for a dead fish (fish is crossed out) sea kitten toss at its upcoming convention in Seattle. The event organizers promise that the event will be "outrageously fun."
Yes, she feels throwing already dead fish is disrespectful to the fish. In fact, they're not even fish -- they're sea kittens!!!!

There's a dog who knows how to tug the heart strings. Ours can do that too. Chin on the floor, check; roll eyes round to target, check; look mournful, check.
