Red Dwarf, this weekend

At the end of part 3 the guy who's supposed to be the writer actually say's in his own words the script he wrote was based on blade runner. Of course it's blatant, it's part of the joke.

It's a shit joke, and a little tiny bit of subtly wouldn't have gone amiss. Either way, I don't need *you* to recount the dialogue for me, kthx.

No, it wasn't shit and if I want to recount dialogue I will. kthnxbye. :)
He's right, though, Steele. The Blade Runner stuff was intentionally heavy-handed and became increasingly more so as the episode went on. That was the gag.

I can't believe there's going to be a new series paid for by Dave. The Smart Car that became Carbug was bought by Doug, at his own expense, because there wasn't room in the budget. If one considers a season of Red Dwarf to be six episodes I can't believe Dave has the funds to make that happen.

And that's a harsh reality considering it's well known that Red Dwarf cost the BBC less per episode than what they called "Two blokes and a sofa" sitcom.

Hate to interrogate ya, but have you got a source for the new series paid for by Dave thing? Or do you mean Back to Earth?

EDIT: Oh, wait, ignore me. This was just a quick glance reply in the vein hope we'd get another series to justify what Back to Earth was. I see what you said now, dont mind me....*engages innocent whistle mode*

This easter special IMO is also a little test to see if there's enough interest and enough fans to warrant a new series.
They haven't given the easter special the greatest of budgets because they just want to get it back out there to see what the reactions are. If the reactions are good then IMO Dave will give the go ahead to create a new series and there will be the right sized budget to go with it.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself. It may not have been as good as the glory days but it was a fun romp.

I'll plan on buying the DVD. Hopefully, they'll get to make a new series.

Stupid American Question: Is the TV channel really named after Lister? *prepares to feel silly*

Nah. It was renamed "Dave" Because that's a stereotypical name for the average British "Bloke-in-a-pub" sort of "Working-class man". Maybe like "John Doe" in the US in terms of a generic name. (Not used to identify corpses though. :P

Yeah. Just pretend "Spike TV" is called "Bob" and it's the exact same thing. :)

I tell you what, the second one was not so great, the laughter was a little too loud. But god damn, I actually laughed at bits I didn't find funny yesterday. The laughter track makes so much difference.

This is seriously weird - I remember when laughter tracks were first introduced and people complained about them. Now it seems we can't tell if something is funny unless someone else is laughing for us?

Personally, I felt it got better as it went along and loved the ending. The chances of something mind-blowingly good after such a long break (and before that, some of the least appreciated RD) was fairly low, I imagine. As it was, I prefer it to S7 and S8.

I see no one has mentioned that "They Walk Among Us" is a real shop?

Earlier than that. When they were reading the back of the dvd case in episode two, Kryten clearly said "In the blade Runner tradition."

I laughed my ass off about the guy who just made noses who started lifting dialog from Blade Runner. Although the end of the series itself despite the Blade Runner stuff, had Dave making similar decisions as to when in the book he had to leave the better than life Environment.

Although I wish Grant or Naylor would have taken the par of the creator.

It's an interesting phenomenon that is. :) The content is the same, but our rating of that content is affected by hearing the emotional reactions of others, even when that emotional layer is completely artificial.

So the rating we make of the programme is more attributed to this psychological witchcraft, than letting the content speak for itself. :p

It's sad but true. Only comedies that sort of ride the line between comedic and dramatic - like Scrubs - benefit from not having a laugh track.

The MAJOR beef I have with these easter specials is that it doesn't explain nothing of what happened after the end of series 8 in regards to being in an alternate universe.
In these easter specials we're suddenly introduced to Rimmer as a hologram again. In the alternate universe Rimmer was ships captain and a different person so this Rimmer can't possibly be the alternate universe Rimmer hologram and the Red Dwarf of the correct universe was eaten away into nothing so it got destroyed yet they are onboard a Red Dwarf so what on earth is going on!

I like continuity, i'm that kind of guy.
All dealt with neatly by the onscreen legend "Nine Years Later" in the opening moments. You are (in the spirit of this story, in fact) free to fill in the blanks.

Well, you guys really need to watch Series 9 and 10 obviously. ;)

The laugh track does provide some form of emotional reassurance and confidence that whatever we find funny is what's intended to be funny by either the creators (in the event of an artificial laugh track) or what most people would find funny (in the case of a live studio audience). Having a live audience has the benefit that the actors immediately know what works, and very often milk the laughter for further effect.

Personaly in the context of televised comedy I would still prefer not to be told when something is funny, and instead look for the humour myself. Sometimes it's rewarding in itself - I find other things to be funny that were not intended. (Actually, make that a lot of the time. :))

I did that... the pacing is just way off. If I had any skill, I'd try my hand at putting together a 30 minute cut.

I can't believe people are actually sticking up for this shit with the old "you just didn't get it" defence.

Oh, I beg your pardon. That's comic genius right there.

Right, because it was so mind boggling in its complexity.

I guess I was just hoping for something that didn't feel like a damn children in need special. So sue me.
