Red Dwarf, this weekend

I watched most of it. But missed the first 5 minutes. I'm not really a fan of RD anyway, but this new episode was much what I was expecting, which was pretty middle ground. So 5/10 points there.

Humor-wise it slightly better than I expected, because it wasn't at all Ben Eltony like series 7 and 8 were. So 7/10 points there. :)

In terms of quality and faithfulness, it was actually a little reminiscent of that Blackadder special episode in the 1990s 'Back and Forth', where Baldric built a time machine. :) Not that that's a good thing. So 4/10 points there.

Overall 16/30 = 53% from me. :)

Hmmm... I enjoyed some bits of it.

Rimmer dancing around while the squid thing attacked them had me in stitches, and Sophie Winkleman is always welcome.

However, it's very much in the vein of the "dramedy" VII/VIII series, something that I wasn't too hot on as it's obvious that Doug Naylor wants to make a serious sci-fi show, and is trying to impose bits of this on Red Dwarf. I'm not entirely sure whether that's a good thing, but at least there's no sign of Mac McDonald and co. They completely ruined the entire setup.

Did they ever give a reason on the show for holly swapping sexes.
I know the real reason why the actor left never knew why they brought him back though.

Was just looking around for info on why Holly was absent, and I found this that Norman Lovett posted on his Myspace. Seems he's not a happy chappy...

So far there have been 3 reasons in the press why there is no Holly in these programmes that are being shown over Easter on the Dave channel. 1 No budget 2 Didn't want the crew dragging a computer around with them on earth 3 A water leak caused a short circuit and caused the computer to break down. This gives you an idea of what the people who make Red Dwarf (GrantNaylor) are like and you will be able to read all about them and the cast in my auto biography which I am working on as I speak. I watched Chris, Robert and Danny on BBC Breakfast News this morning. Talk about laughs take a holiday. I will be watching the shows but I really don't see how it will be any good because it's not shot in front of a studio audience and they're not trapped on board Red Dwarf which was it's main strength when it was character comedy. Everything is done by one man (Naylor) and he can't do everything well. Bring back Grant and get a good director (Bye) and it might have stood a chance. And Holly with some good gags of course. Not one of the cast have got in touch with me which just shows how self centred they are. I'm not bitter just unhappy about the way I have been treated by them. By the way GrantNaylor you still owe me money for the Red Dwarf movie rehearsals. Happy Easter everyone, Norman.

It was in the fast forward crawl at the start of series 3. I seem to remember Holly fell in love with Hilly, and became obsessed with her, so he performed a head sex change operation on himself to look like her...

Oh dear... No, not bitter at all Norman...

If anyone's wondering why Ed Bye hasn't directed the new episodes, I met him briefly at a Neil Gaiman book launch last year, and he said then that he was hoping to do them, but the shooting dates kept changing and it didn't look as if he was free for the most likely ones (reading between the lines, if it was a choice between him and the cast being available, then the cast were obviously more important. No ill feeling, it's just that they're onscreen!).

The episodes (well, episode, so far)? Not that impressed - seems like a weak season 3/4/5 episode, with everyone written to their more 2-D traits (Rimmer is a self-imoprtant coward, Lister is a slob, etc). But it is only the first half hour of a three-part story, so fingers crossed.

You know what, I'm so annoyed about this episode. I actually let my expectations of the new Red Dwarf go up, and I felt heart broken when I saw the Skutter Droid in horrible CGI, I thought to myself before they played the episode that, if there would be Skutters, that they would be in CGI, which I accepted... but it just doesn't feel or look right. Most of the things I loved about RD in the past seems to have gone, I mean why does mostly every scene on the ship contain a green screen? I enjoyed it with their old crappy sets, it actually ironically made it look more realistic. And it was a bad mistake not to film it infront of a live audience or not have a laugh track behind, sometimes I don't know where to laugh.

At the moment, I've laughed twice, both from Rimmer (who I always found to be the funniest character). His remark about something on the sonar being "bigger than God" made me laugh, and when he was dancing.

Truthfully, I miss Holly. I always thought his gags were the best because they were always so simple in origin. But hey, one good thing came from tonight, I got to watch the episode Quarantine, which is my favourate episode to date.

To be honest I didn't laugh once. Simpy wasn't funny

OK, that wasn't too bad. Was it Red Dwarf of old, no, was it better than any current comedy show I can think of? Yes.
Do you mean as in "airing at the moment" or just general sitcoms of the day?
As for the first, The Inbetweeners is fooking brilliant, and the latter the mighty Peep Show of course

He's abitter, bitter man. He ruins the commentaries for season eight with his whining and moaning.

Good first episode for the three. Funny, coherent plot line. I'd be interested in knowing how exactly Kochanski died, but its not overally important.

Huh, nothing mind blowing and only mildly funny. Pretty comparable to Season Seven with the semi-serious tone, annoying Mary Sue, and lack of laughter track. The complete lack of continuity with the last two/three seasons could explained away as this being the alternative reality version of the Red Dwarf. IMHO, Season Eight was quite underrated.

Oh phew, all the drunks have finally left my house, I enjoyed it, solid if predictable fare. Looking forward to the next 2 episodes now.

I'll reserve judgement until we've seen it all, but it was a surprisingly decent opening I thought. A bit short on laughs and a few cringeworthy moments, but a damn sight better than series 7&8 which is all I was really hoping for.

But I have to wonder what you're smoking hereBob:

was it better than any current comedy show I can think of? Yes.
You've got to be kidding. Off the top of my head, the IT crowd and any episode of the brilliant Peep Show are astoundingly better comedies than this was. Beyond situation comedy, Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle and Newswipe have more and better punchlines.

Take away the emotional baggage of it being the latest, long awaited instalment of a cult classic and you'd be left with a pretty hollow shell.

I can only guess that you must have been thinking of some dreck like Horne and Corden... or, god forbid (gulp) Hyperdrive. Ugh. I feel ill just mentioning it. Well, at least it showed that piss stained pretender vaguely what a space based comedy is supposed to be like, grumblegrumble.

Am a wee bit tipsy.
