Hatin' on Supernatural

I actually think that Dean is the smarter (and funnier) of the two but he just shows it in a different way.

When it comes to actual hunting, Dean is the smarter of the two. Also, Dean's the more intuitive of the brothers. Sam thinks he's the more sensitive brother, but he isn't.

I recently got into Supernatural. Somehow, I hadn't heard of or seen this show until last week.

What the HELL?!?

How the fuck does THAT happen?!?

The show is THE ONLY one that made it through the new tv season of '05 in that huge chunk of genre shows that got greenlit back then and, while not a massive hit, has certainly had a VERY LARGE presence in tv and certainly on here.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how you have never heard of it.

Oh and I agree - Dean is a dick. Even Sam, with his bulging arms and chiselled chest is pissing me off lately with his extra-emo scowls. Actually, the meta arc for this season has REALLY turned me off this year. Why introduce angels when they're going to act like smarmy demons and have demons that help them like the angels should.

All we need now is for them to bring back George Burns and have him play God

No, Supernatural's best years are definietly behind it.

Easily.

You've pretty much completely missed the point up to now about the angels, then. Because that is the entire point. Nevermind that you're apparently ignorant to how angels have always been protrayed everywhere outside of fairy tales and romance novels. They've never been nice, cuddly, helpful do-gooders.

All I know is - the show is quickly becoming unwatchable to me now. It is just WAYYYYY too dark and depressing. It has gone down the "Q" route of having pretty much omniopotent beings who won't actually do good to help our characters.

I said it back in 1987, I said it with "I Borg", again with the fucked up Helo/disease storyline in the abomination that is the new BSG and I'll say it again - if you're going to introduce all powerful beings/cures to your problems/magical panaceas and then YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR CHARACTERS USE THEM, for whatever reason, that is REALLY BAD writing.

The characters have asked the angels for help again and again, and they refuse... It also seems that some of the angels have their own agenda, until you know what that is, you can't really expect it to go smooth and easy just cos there's powerful beings involved.

I guess. I just know, right now, for me personally, the show has gone way downhill from what it used to be. Maybe it's that "overstayed its welcome" thing, for me.

Each to their own I guess. But minus a couple of clunkers, I've found this season to be the best one yet.

I hope you didn't pay too much for the popcorn, JohnP and WillsBabe.

Wow, do you have me on ignore or something?

I'm afraid there's no wrath to be had from me. AJBryant isn't in for a world of hurt.

Yeah, like WillsBabe was saying, it wasn't about us waiting for you to rip AJ a new one, it was in anticipation of a quality post about why Dean is such a great character.

The Angels are, in fact, kicking ass. They're just mostly doing it offscreen. The problem lies in the fact that it is impossible for the Angels to actually stop the demons from releasing Lucifer. There are just too many demons, and too many seals for them to choose from. Instead, they're preparing Dean for the fight. They can't take the big bad down; he's stronger than all of them. But, Dean can. He just needs to be made ready.

Of course, it's also fairly clear that God doesn't exist and probably never did, and is just being used as a propaganda tool by the ruling angels.

^^ Agreed. Very few, if any, of the Angels have seen God, just as very few, if any, of the demons have ever seen Lucifer. The darkness and tone of the recent two seasons (IMHO) is terrific, because when the show first came out I thought it was going to be idiotic TV camp. Thankfully, it isn't.

I recently got into Supernatural. Somehow, I hadn't heard of or seen this show until last week. So I now have one episode left for season three and I'm ready for four.

But... Damn.

I *hate* Dean's character. How the hell could anyone as a "hunter" have so little impulse control and common sense and stay alive? (Smarting off when trying to pass himself as a cop or some other official? Come on -- he'd be made as a fake in minutes!)

I mean, he's an IDIOT. He's all id, on two feet.

Am I misreading this?

What's the appeal of a character like that?

Dean's funny. Sam is boring as hell. The show isn't exactly realistic when it comes to their fake identities, but I don't care too much about that. I watch to see Dean be funny, monsters being killed, and hot chicks.

I don't hate it. It's just not worth my time. It's been done before and much better when it was known as the X-Files.

X-files is a little bland in comparison. Mulder was funny, but I prefer the humor on Supernatural (I really got a laugh out of their treatment of Chris Angel). I also hated that Scully took years to admit anything weird was out there. You think she would have changed her mind after her 14th Werewolf.

Ahhhhh, JohnP, WillsBabe and last but not least Servo.....you embarrass me. :) :o :adore:

Tulin, I'm sorry you're disenchanted with this season. I think it's the best one yet. The angels are dicks. That's the point. They're off fighting their own battles. They can't help because they're busy protecting seals. Many won't help. Then you have the traitors and God may not--in fact--exist. I love it that most of the angels haven't seen him. It all begs the question a lot of people ask every day--if God is there, why doesn't He help? It's a question with no real, or apparent, answer, and it does seem to many people as if He doesn't exist. Why doesn't God prevent terrible things? Why, indeed. Ultimately we have to think for ourselves. That's the message, IMO. That's why they "demoted" Cas. Dean's rubbing off on him. I agree that their fake identities were never centered in realism. At least the FBI was chasing them for awhile and now they're "dead" because of Henriksen's quick thinking before Lilith took him out.

I agree about it taking Scully a little too long to acknowledge supernatural beings' existence in the XF universe, broberfett. After so many seasons it got ridiculous. That's why I hope Kripke and the 2 J's stick to their guns and don't re-sign their contracts after season 5 like they said in the EW article this week. EK's always maintained that he had 5 years of story, and the two leads are physically exhausted. It's rich that Ostroff is finally paying attention after ignoring the show for 4 seasons and cutting its budget. Padalecki's right. Better to go out on top and leave them wanting more than to overstay your welcome.

EDIT--I love it when our reruns beat Smallville reruns--2.06 mill to 2.03 million and 0.8 to 0.7. That's happened before. What's great is that we scored more viewers than an original 90210 this week. It only scored 1.982 million. Of course 90210's 18-34 demo equaled its meager HH rating, so the network will like that its entire audience is their precious 18-34 female demo.

Not a surprise really. Over here in the UK, I'd say Supernatural is the only thing worth watching on the channel it's on.

That's not fair, it's got... erm... OK, you're right.

How can he be the "smarter" of the two when almost every time he wants to rush in to do something and Sam says they should wait, Dean is *wrong* and Sam was right?

Really, I am surprised that Dean has stayed alive so long. Well, apart from that chunk of time when he *was* dead....
