In life sometimes the bad guy wins the battle.
Yeah especially when that bad guy is from 100 years in the future....

Anyone else happy about seeing the kobayashi maru thing with Kirk? I am very glad and happy they are showing this!
Maybe in the coming years some of these guys who are stuck in their ways and not willing to accept anything new or different will disappear from Trek fandom, and this new Star Trek will bring in a lot of new fans who are excited for the new direction.
What about all those other Vulcans out there in the galaxy who go back home for the Pon Far every 7 years, I guess they'll have to make do with what they got![]()
Maybe we should just wait until we see the movie to see how it all works out in context eh
Eh. We know Vulcan is destroyed by Nero. Of all his targets, that was probably his sweetest. Maybe there was nothing that could be done to stop him. Total surprise. Dumb luck. Maybe lessons learned from trying to stop him there saved Earth. True, we don't know. Still, it's a hell of a thing to have happen. Compared to V-Ger or the probe, it's a helluva thing our heroes couldn't stop. Makes them a little less heroic. Probably billions of people dying all at once. A planet erased. Given what happened to Spock when the Intrepid was destroyed, I wonder if he'll feel the death of those billions.

I don't think they have to go *home*, they just have to get it on with a handy Vulcan woman. (Not sure if pon farr can be satiated with a non-Vulcan partner)
But Nero destroying Vulcan makes it FAIL for our heroes, to me, anyway. They figured out the incredible V-Ger and saved Earth. They figured out the mysterious probe in TVH and saved Earth. But they couldn't stop a 24th century miner before he committed the most heinous act in the galaxy.

I was genuinely involved from beginning to end. The dynamic between Kirk, Spock, McCoy and company was captured in spades. And that is what JJ Abrams does so well. He creates extremely complex and interesting characters set against an often fantastical backdrop. What's even more impressive is that he didn't create these characters. He took characters that had already been well established within Trek cannon and gave them a fresh perspective.
As for the acting - Kudos all around. But the standout for me was Zachary Quinto. This came as a surprise since I truly loathe his character Sylar on Heroes. I always thought he looked the part but I wasn't sure he could pull off walking the fine line between logic and emotion that Nimoy did so well. But he did, and I salute him.
Other random observations: Anton Yelchin's Chekov was hilarious. Eric Bana's Nero seemed genuinely pissed during the entire film (which I found particularly refreshing given that the last Star Trek villain was a pouty little bitch) Winona Ryder's Amanda Grayson was surprisingly moving given that she had such a small role. Simon Pegg, also hilarious. The Narada...badass and the inside looks like a serious hazard to be walking around on. Planet destruction...I'd like to see more of this. And the opening scene with the attack on the USS Kelvin was breathtaking.

Maybe this is the reason Spock is acting rather cranky in the trailers? Maybe it did in fact unhinge him. As you, I would certainly expect Spock to be utterly devastated and griefstricken (in his own way of course). The large loss of life would be unconsolable to him, especially if one considers his reactions in "The Immunity Syndrome".

Of course it can. Otherwise, no Spock, eh?
