Job Interviews Of Fail: This Time I'm On The Other Side Of The Desk..

Re: Job Interviews Of Fail: This Time I'm On The Other Side Of The De

Christ, I hated when HR people did that shit. That's why I didn't do it when I had to do a interview on someone.

A lot times my contracts-- even charity stuff-- would bind me to a non disclosure agreement on the details of the projects; which, of course, would include pay. I can't count how many jobs I ended up missing out on cause I wouldn't tell how much I made on a contract and the interviewers either didn't get or refused to accept "I'm contractually bound not to tell you."

Hell, I had a lead call me up (something set up by a former client) that got pissed when I wouldn't tell how much I charged said client cause "Well, I don't want to find out I'm paying more than [the client that referred him] is." Totally ignoring that they were wholly different projects and that his [the lead] was much larger and more time and labor intensive project.

I learned afterward not to disclose jack to HR people and not to let them buffalo me. My dad told me never to let them do that. He had been offered and accepted a position for a company and went in to fill out his paperwork. The HR people insisted they needed to know the names of his children and all that and he told them, "None of your business." They persisted, explaining that he couldn't apply for the job unless he disclosed that information. That pissed him off and he told them that the names of his children had nothing to do with the job. Push came to shove, but he held firm. They told him he wouldn't be able to work for the company, and he informed them to check with the supervisor as the job was already his. HR called the supervisor, explain the situation, and then told my dad, "Uh, never mind. We don't need that information."

It never ceases to amaze me at the amount of personal information companies think they need and how willingly most people give it up. I never, ever list any of my son's information with HR of any company I work for. I've known people who had HR play the "we need to know your pay" game, and they've simply walked out only later to be called back because the hiring supervisor *specifically* wants to interview that person and has told HR to go pound sand.

Wow. Amazing.

I wonder how often interviewees are tools like this. Makes me think all I have to do is know what's on my resume and be polite and I'd immediately be better than these yahoos.

One thing I wish they would make illegal is credit checks for a job. In the last few years I've had several interviewers tell me that the company (ex Radio Shack and one mom and pop coffee shop) requires good credit to work for the company. The reason: People with good credit don't steal, people with bad credit do.

Agreed. That's total BS.

I can only recall this happening to me for jobs with banks etc. A few years ago I had two applications that required credit checks. They were a few days apart. One told me I'd passed, the other told me I'd failed.

I'm sure they make it up.

One of the production slots is filled now.

And no she's not some hot young sweet-smelling boobatar (THAT HAPPENED ONE TIME GEEZE STOP BRINGING IT UP!) but an older lady in her 40s.

Oh, in other words, she's a Cougar. ;)

No, people with bad credit need good jobs to boost their credit. What could you possibly steal from Radio Shack or a diner that would be worth more than getting a paycheck every week?

Many larger companies use the credit-check as an additional way to screen workers. The logic being (as stated above) if you're behind on payments or have a bankruptcy in your past you are not responsible and in effect you steal from banks (by borrowing and not paying back) and don't make good on promises.

Originally it wasn't intended to be that way but that's what the consultants peddle... and damnit all if you are charging $2,500 an hour for advice you MUST be preaching the gospel.

I think you can make strong case that, if you can't handle your commitments in your personal life, you may not handle them well in your business life.

Agreed!
The massive majority of my bad credit isn't even my own, yet it's difficult for me to get a job.

Too, consider this: People like you, JP, who don't use credit cards, who follow the Dave Ramsey method of financial management. You get screwed the worst because you don't let yourself get in debt, you don't need credit, which means you don't build credit. They're trying to box everyone in to a society of debt. I believe that very much.

Oh I hit that wall before I was married. I didn't use credit, period. Cash or nothing. Went to get a job and I got told I didn't have a history they could verify so I couldn't be hired. When I asked for clarification: No police record- not even a ticket, and no credit history, which added up to them that either I was using a fake name or was hiding something
