Trekkers vs. Trekkies

Hello, after my latest participation at a convention. I have noticed two similar, but very different types of fans. These distinctions can be easily observed when pointed out. I know this has been debated in the past, but I would like for everyone to state the differences between the two. I will start it off.

A Trekker wears a Starfleet uniform to a convention because there is no other way to dress at a convention
A Trekkie wears a uniform to a convention because s/he thinks they have to

My opinion - I was among the first fans - went to the first conventions in the early seventies. We were "Trekkies." We caught all the heat for it, a strange despise that later fans only think they know about. We blazed that trail.

Eventually, Somewhere around '80, I think, some people decided that the term "Trekker" was more dignified, and started floating it around. You're still a freak in Spock ears with plastic phasers. What kind of dignity does semantics offer? To me, "Trekkies are the old school, founding fathers fan group, who took the term that was essentially pejorative and claimed it as their own, like "Yankee Doodle."

"Trekker" is a pretentious term for people ashamed of being Trekkies.

I've been around since the beginning, and for the life of me, I've never understood why one name (Trekker or Trekkie) sounds better than the other. And, both have their share of negative baggage attached to them these days.

I've always been comfortable simply saying I'm a fan.

i am a trekkie. i once asked a friend whether she was a trekkie. she corrected me, "no, i am a trekker." i don't know what the difference is.

I just call myself a Trekker because it fits in with another hobby of mine which is hiking...so I'm space & woods trekker.

Come to think of it, I am a Trekker. I'm a fan of the show Globe Trekker.

In Germany, nobody knows 'Trekkies' or 'Trekkers' or what the difference between the two might be... you are a Star Trek fan, therefore you must be weird*.
I am what I am and that's all that I am.



* I know what I'm talking about... winter of '91, shortly before a lecture about Chinese philosophy... a talk with your fellow students, most of them you've met for the very first time four weeks ago... many female students, intellectuals, greenies, feminists... you - without thinking - drop the innocent remark that you like sci-fi and Star Trek in particular... you couldn't have made more a fool out of yourself when all your clothes suddenly had dropped off... for the rest of your time at the university everybody thinks you are an oversized child, the only one thinking along your line being a guy who runs around campus in a TNG uniform all the time.

Since this is more a General Trek topic than a Trek XI topic, and since none of the T-shirts your link was selling have anything directly to do with this movie, why don't I just close this thread?
