What was it? Just a few minutes ago, I heard a short, fairly loud burst from up above. This was the third or fourth time I'd heard it in my neighborhood, which is a residential area.

Some people often say it's a sonic boom, but what exactly causes it? There are no ultrasonic jet planes in the area.

Any recent seismic activity in the area? Maybe around the time you heard the noises?

It's also possible it could be sonic booms from planes too far away to otherwise hear. Probably out over the ocean.

Since November of 2008. Prior to that, I had lived less than a mile from where I am now for four years (different street). Since it doesn't happen too often (and is totally unexpected), it would be pointless to set up a recorder.

Yes. I felt a tremor around 10:40 a.m. on Monday, 03/30. I found out later there was a 4.3 earthquake. By the way, the quake occurred AFTER the boom sound.

oh ok. I was imagining 3-4 times this week.

Sonic booms are quite possible. It's normal etiquette for aircraft to hit that only when they're high up and away from cities, but the noise can travel some distance, so you may be hearing the residual sounds of them. Atmosphere can affect it too. Air moisture will absorb sound and prevent it from travelling far (I think it's that way around ). So maybe the atmosphere was simply in your favour on these days

May be your answer. Could have been smaller tremmors before the bigger quake. Small shallow quakes may not be felt, but can still generate a booming sound that reaches the surface. Deeper, stronger quakes may be felt, but the booming sound is dissipated before reaching the surface.
