....How will you feel? Personally, I'd be more than a little peeved off if this film erases the very first episode of TOS, which IMHO was one of the best.
I still think it's rather unlikely that this team will outright contradict anything from the the original series,
The uniforms? What about the uniforms?
The uniforms of the crew of the U.S.S. Kelvin look very different when compared to the The Cage-style turtlenecks, although they should fall into the same timeframe...

it seems that there will still be a period of time in which pike is in command of the enterprise and spock serves with him. during this period before kirk comes aboard, they could have visited talos iv. it is more likely that the menagerie might not occur, but such thoughts are just speculation.

I'm not so sure. The impression I've gotten from reading things here on the BBS for several months, is that the Enterprise is being launched for the first time when Kirk comes aboard; hence these events appear to take place during its maiden voyage.
If that is indeed the case, then I don't see how the events of 'The Cage' will occur in this revised time-frame.
It wouldn't make any difference to me. I already have "The Cage" on DVD.

I still think it's rather unlikely that this team will outright contradict anything from the the original series, simply because the show dealt with the characters' history so little I don't see why the movie would have any trouble fitting into their past at one point or another.
If they did, I'd be a little disappointed, but not terribly. The Cage is great on its own; if this movie doesn't function as a prequel to it that's fine.

Yes, at almost the same time. Twenty or twenty-one years, according to most timelines (2233-2254) and the Columbia's crash was supposed to have been eighteen years before the events seen in "The Cage". The uniforms worn by the Kelvin's crew and the Columbia's crew could easily have been very similar in style or design, and there'd be enough time for at least a couple of major uniform style changes to have occurred before the Cage/WNMHGB/TOS era.Isn't the Kelvin destroyed around the time Kirk is born? Which would make it around fifteen years before "the Cage". More than enough time for a uniform change.
As others have pointed out, how do we know The Cage won't happen in this timeline? But even if it doesn't, you can say the same thing about every Star Trek episode -- why single out The Cage, especially considering that it really wasn't the first episode of TOS.....How will you feel? Personally, I'd be more than a little peeved off if this film erases the very first episode of TOS, which IMHO was one of the best.

Copy/pasting something I wrote in an earlier thread:
