Are you shitting me? No Gary Mitchell in this film?

I still think it would be possible to put in things that were in the original series as established facts and characters, like Mitchell and still come up with a new hip franchise, little Nods to the series when writing the script respects what's come before and still allows you to chart new ground. Now they very well may have done this, but it's not looking likely. And I still wish they could have come up with an orignal and exciting story without utilizing the most overused of plot devices in trek, time travel. Using TT really smacks of the prior overseers of Trek who used it to death in all the films and series.

I betcha that Kirk gets into that bar fight with Finnegan...

But seriously, many complain that these characters "won't even be hinted at/mentioned/etc." in this movie. I ask you: Where's the proof? There is a helluva lot we DON'T know. And what we DO know doesn't by itself conclusively prove that these characters aren't around in some way, maybe a passing reference or some such.

Maybe JJ will throw you guys a bone....(that's what she said:lol:).....

Actually, Mitchell has a pivotal role in this movie. You see, as a young boy, he and his father were at the bottom of this cliff studying geology when a classic car comes out of nowhere and lands on them. Quite tragic.

I'd rather watch a movie than a fanboy checklist.

That "Of Gods and Men" fan film, during Uhura's opening narration, she goes out of her way to say where Spock, McCoy, Scotty and Sulu are since they're not in the movie. That's what I think of when I think of the fanboy checklist.
I think of Kirk walking down the hall on his way to TA in John Gill's class; trying to avoid Finnegan; trying to figure out how he can date Carol and Ruth at the same time and help Gary pass philosophy.

I thought Gary Mitchell was a conceited jerk (did not like the character), so I don't have a problem with them not including him in XI or any subsequent movies.

Conceited jerk? Try conceited prick.

His non-appearence in the movie will be like Christine Chapel's, most likely.

Here's who I'd love to see play her:

Elisha Cuthbert

Kirsten Dunst

Scarlett Johansson

Courtney Love

For Gary Mitchell:

Seth Rogen

Ben Stiller

Heath Ledger (if only)

Zac Efron (maybe)

^ Finnegan could still be there, technically, as
takes on four Starfleets at once in that fight. Just don't look for Finnegan to have any lines.

The people making the movie have already said that there will be such nods, not only to TOS but to all of the Trek series, and even to a few of the novels -- things that "regular folks" in the audience probably won't even notice but that fans of Trek will. Get out your fine-toothed comb, your magnifying glass, your spectrum analyzer, and have them ready; I'm betting that people on boards like this will be making a contest of it to see who can find, list and cross-index them all first.

Just the way it should be... :techman:

No Gary Mitchell?!

How can that be?! In Where No Man's Gone Before, he has known Kirk since his StarFleet Acad. days. He is the helmsmen on the ship, and I believe the Executive Officer also (before Spock took that position).

How the hell can they write a script and not include Gary Mitchell? He was such an important charater in the first episode, where Kirk had to make a choice, kill off his best friend or the Enterprise. It was a real growth episode fro Kirk, and we were able to see his loyality to his troop rather than to his best friend....
OMFG BOYCOTT!!!11

Now THAT would be awesome! I'm sure some Bruce Mars-ish character actor with a fake Irish brogue could play the part for however many scenes it lasts. Dominic Monaghan from LOST and LORD OF THE RINGS would fit the bill nicely...in part because he sorta looks a smidge like Bruce Mars and knows J.J. Abrams well!

Maybe it's because, oh...I don't know, Gary wasn't at the Academy when Kirk was? It's made pretty clear in WNMHGB that Mitchell was a cadet when Kirk was an instructor there. So even in the original timeline, when Kirk was a cadet, Mitchell was probably still stuffing freshmen in lockers in high school.

But why let a little detail like that get in they way??? I mean forget everything you know right?! :guffaw:

but we still have the thing that while some of us want all these people in this one film most of them just came and went in the original series.
without it appears very possibly any long range effect on the characters.

i mean you hear of the events of the farragutt for obsession but you dont hear of it again.

As long as the new film doesn't totally invalidate the idea that Kirk and Mitchell knew one another in Starfleet at some point and were friends, I'd be happy. That would mean that Mitchell could still come on board Enterprise after the film at Kirk's request and become involved in the tragic events of WNMHGB. It doesn't really bother me that much whether Kirk was a Lt. or a cadet when they met, as long as the basic criteria of their friendship is the same. Just because we don't see him in the academy scenes doesn't mean he isn't there; he could just have taken a leave of absense. That would be my ideal scenario anyway.

Just two articles for years gone by.

The build up, the plot and everything else is like deja vu for Abrams trek. So sad how people forget so soon about recent history.
Lest you forget yourself, outside of Trek and general sci fi circles, Nemesis hardly had any coverage. JJTrek is receiving copious amounts of POSITIVE words from various outlets that never even cared for Trek.

People: There will be no Gary Mitchell in this movie or any other. You might as well stop whining about it and move on with your lives. Isn't it enough they included Captain Pike and got the uniform color scheme close to the original? Geez! -- RR
