Are you shitting me? No Gary Mitchell in this film?

People: There will be no Gary Mitchell in this movie or any other. You might as well stop whining about it and move on with your lives. Isn't it enough they included Captain Pike and got the uniform color scheme close to the original? Geez! -- RR

So, are you saying we should pay more attention to the movies?

For starters! Look, it's 2009. Canon be damned! It's time for new canon! (Not New Canaan, or even New Coke)! -- RR

You must be re-enacting Evil Kirk from the Enemy Within. The real Captain Kirk would never tell us to get a life.

This movie won't be Canon, if it features Uhura instead of Alden!!! j/k

I know you were just kidding...but to all those people who say, "yeah -- he's right. Alden should be the communications officer", I ask this:

in those other 10 episodes that Uhura was not seen, or those 25 episodes during the 3 seasons that didn't include Sulu, or the 2 episodes after WNMHGB in which McCoy was not seen or even mentioned -- why don't you put forth the argument that during those episodes Uhura or Sulu or McCoy were no longer a member of the crew? We don't see them, so doesn't that mean they are no longer part of Kirk's ship? (at least using the argument some people would use).

I'm just glad to see Christopher Pike canonically established for certain as the first Captain of the Enterprise - the character deserves that for his place in the show's history.

Mitchell could have some sort of scene, i haven't read or heard anything to the contrary. Im fine either way (if hes in it or not), but if he is, i hope its not something that seems forced. Someone mentioned OGAM, and the scene where Uhura is telling someone where Kirk, Spock, etc are currently at, and thats what I hope they dont do if Mitchell is in the new movie.

Eh? Would you mind explaining this a bit more please, I don't think I've heard about that.

Yes, I definitely agree with that sentiment. Captain Pike kicks ass! -- RR

Well...he's the first canonical captain in THIS timeline. Agreed. ;)

What about Dr. Piper and Lee Kelso? And why are women wearing skirts instead of pants... And why doesn't the bridge have the "war of the worlds" microphones coming up from each station? Why are they using the color red in the uniforms? etc... etc...

Look,

You cannot possible make a movie that is supposed to be a reboot/update of TOS, if you insist that everything is held hostage to the characters and events of one episode, especually a pilot episode.

This movie is trying to introduce 7 new actors to play the biggest 7 characters of TOS. How confusing would it be to a casual Trek fan, or a non-Trek fan to have a movie that prominently featured a character they probably never heard of? And all of this in an attempt to satisfy a group of "fans" who will a) never be satisfied and b) will definitely go see the movie anyway, if for no other reason than so they can bitch about it.

Having said all of that, a brief reference to Mitchell and/or Finnigan, that doesn't really impact the story either way, would be a nice nod to old time fans.

Well spoken, Cadet!

Maybe THIS version of Kirk in this timeline never met Mitchell at the Academy. Maybe Mitchell's parents were on the Kelvin, and got blown to smithereens. Maybe he doesn't exist in Abrams universe.

Gary Mitchell was a plot device in one episode out of seventy-nine. I'm sure the new film will do quite well on its own without him.

I cannot understand why people have to be so fixated on one particular person... Star Trek as a whole is always about a rather limited group of people, the core crew of a starship or a space station. Everybody else is more or less inconsequential and serves merely a plot device - different people, different plot and vice versa. It is understandable that supporting roles find their fair share of fans, but it is impossible to satisfy everybody within the constrains of a single movie. But never despair... there might always be another movie!
