The revelation that NCIS Director Leon Vance is apparently a fake, living a lie is the remarkable part of the episode.

He never attended Annapolis or served as a Marine but simply stepped into his mentors life once the man he worshipped couldn't live that dream anymore.

This gives Gibbs huge leverage over Director Vance in the future.

Holy crap whatta secret!!

Damn.

OTOH, Vance has a *great* family. Love the wife and kids and the stories everyone's heard a hundred times. ;)

What I don't get is how it's even possible that someone in a position to "have lunch with Condi" as the old director did would even be able to steal someone's life? :p

The identity switch doesn't make sense if that's what's in the CIA secret file. There's no way they'd sit on their hands while an impostor ascends to NCIS director.

Though it now makes sense why she called Vance "Teek" at the beginning, as in "Tyler Keith."

And Gibbs definitely knows his marines. And who isn't one. Though I don't understand what led him to think the two had switch places.

Though this seems like a big much to lay on since this was the first episode where we got a sense of who Vance is. Maybe they should've built up to it.

I figure two things.

1) The CIA wants something to hang over the head of the NCIS Director for the future. Because the show has made no secret that the two agencies loathe each other.

2) Vance has been shown to be close friends with the Director of Mossad (Israels intel agency and more). Thus Mossad probably requests that the CIA help protect Vance.

I don't think Vance lied about it to NCIS, just to his wife. As for Tara, I think she initially thought she was talking to her john before Vance stepped into the light from the bathroom.

Finally got a chance to watch this tonight.

It was okay, but not my favorite episode of NCIS. I gave it an 'average'.

I felt the switched identity thing was poorly presented and not well enough explained. Maybe they will fill in the gap later...but I thought the lack of hard information left the episode flat because we STILL don't really know the full extent of the Director's bond to the deceased.

Plus, Gibbs was right - Jenny used that chair for a personal agenda and it wasn't cool. I'd hate to see this Director go down the same path.

Simpsons did it.

I think it's strongly implied that Vance and the dead guy switched identities, so the real Leon Vance is now dead.

By the way, why hasn't the resident Mark Harmon stalker chimed on on this episode yet? :P

I agree with this, I’ll wait for more information till I pass judgment.

This thing about Vance has been set up to give Gibbs more actual control over the Director than he could realistically have.

Gibbs had that influence over Jenny Shepherd due to their shared history and her obsession with bringing down the French arms dealer she blamed for her fathers suicide.
